On the Archos:
In the settings menu from the front screen, set your Archos to 'PC Hard Drive' instead of Windows Media Player. If it doesn't show as an external hard drive when you plug it into your pc, do this....
On the pc:
Go to Start\run, type diskmgmt.msc and click ok to take you into Disk Management. Your Archos should show as a drive in here and you can associate your new drive with a drive letter.
If you cannot see your Archos in this windowafter you've set it to 'PC Hard Drive' on the Archos, then you may have a dodgy usb cable.
Hi, Before you hook up to usb go into tools/settings/storage & see if your archos is set for pc hard drive mode which turns the unit into a external hard drive. That should fix it,Make sure you have a copy of the latest firmware downloaded onto your
desktop from the Archos website before you try formatting or recovery
functions. if that doesn't you might have to do a repair or format. You can try these functions in Customer assistance function in the tools/settings/customer assistance, but I have much better luck doing a hard reset. Sometimes the unit gets a glitch in it & you have to do a hard reset. Turn on the power when the Archos screen comes on which has the Archos logo on it Immediately hold down the volume + button until the recovery page comes up
then i upgraded to Archos 605 Wifi (20GB-160GB) OS v 2.1.04 heres the link for 2.0.10 http://update.archos.com/5/a605/a605_r2.0.10/firmware_a605.aos and heres the link for 2.1.04 http://update.archos.com/5/a605/a605_r2.1.04/firmware_a605.aos
A couple things to note. First. Make sure the files are the right format. second, make sure they are in the music folder. third... sometimes it won't read them. you can still play them here's how:
Go on your archos go to music, than at the bottom click on hard drive.... you can play everything there.... i recommend not synching it... but dragging and dropping them in by hand... i like doing things basic...
1. Copy all factory installed files from the Archos on to your PC hard drive or write a CD / DVD. 2. Download the latest software from www.Archos.com and keep a copy safe (not on the Archos!) … there was a new version last week by the way …1.5.12 3. If you record any films, music, or TV that you want to keep forever then don’t keep them on the Archos! 4. Factory installed samples (photos & films), wallpaper, etc are available for download from FTP://support.archos.com 5. If you need to format the drive but it won’t talk to the PC through the normal USB, try plugging a flash memory card (the bigger the better) into the other (left hand) USB socket and copy stuff onto it. 6. Avoid changing back & forward between ‘hard drive’ and ‘windows device’ … not sure if this was the cause of the problem but you never know! 7.Always have mains power (not battery) when moving files around.
