I insert the flash drive into the laptop and the message after some attempts to start it says that it was unable to locate adrive for the device

I don't understand what you wrote. I just bought a 512 flash drive from Office Depot because a new 2-G Toshiba wouldn't work. I inserted it and the message is essentially no driver is available. This is aproblem for Win98 and I need to solve it.

I have no idea what I can do to answer your question. I have tried to search on my main computer but nothing apears that makes sense to me.

I can't find amanufacturer because I bouth it at Office Depot in order to get a small 512 flash drive. That was the smallest I could find and I don't know the manufacturer and haven't been able to search in the unit for amanufacturer.

Hi..

Windows 98 does not support Plug n Play Devices. So you have to download appropriate drivers from Microsoft Website. Though Windows 98SE ( Windows 98 Second Edition ) thought to be support USB Mass Storage Drives fairly, these drivers are not pre-installed with OS. You have to download Service packs to install these drivers.

Since Windows 98 have TWO versions, we have to download corresponding service packs .

You can
Download Service Packs for Windows 98 Here

Download Service Packs for Windows 98 SE (Windows 98 Second Edition) Here

To Know how to install these, please click on

You can find more details about this issue on this page

Thank You.

Which drivers for USB External Hard Drive ?

Well, Occam's razor philosophy!  I just tried on my 250 Gb IOMEGA external HDD on Win98 and it worked. "Mass storage" jargon driver does NOT work. HOWEVER if you declare it as "USB FLASH DISK", it WORKS, (after computer reboots), though not that speedy. Anyway, you can do your job. Now if you have found any better solution, please forward it at oratiara@hotmail.com. Thank you!

W98SE Driver for Kingston 1.0Gb DataTraveller Flash Drive

The people at your local computer shop are wrong but, Windows 98 should at least recognize the USB thumb-drive and ask for drivers.
I would remove all the USB Controllers from within Device Manager and restart; allow Windows upon restart to reload the USB Controllers; then plug in the drive and see if Windows at least recognizes and then install drivers.
It seems only the DTI/XX, KUSBDTE/XX, and DTII/XX support Windows 98.
