Question about IBM ThinkPad G40 Notebook
The most common reason of problems with backlights are the inverters, not the bulks. Check the inverter first.
The backlight are attached inside the LCD panel. In order to change the backlight you have to disasemble the LCD screen, and this is not always possible. You can find the replacement LCD panel here:

If there is one backlight bulb it should be in the bottom fo the screen, if 2 than 2 on the top one on the bottom. I want to point one thing though, if you break the seal around LCD screen that will defect picture quality, I if you are having issue with backlight there is the greater chance that the cable is broken in place where it folds when you close you laptop, rather than the bulb going out. So check the cable first if the cable is not the problem than change entire screen than just that bulb.
