Question about Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000

1 Answer

MS Keyboaeds Back with another one that seems to have MS Support stumped. Dell PC, Windows XP Home OS Replaced MS Multimedia USB-to-PS/2 keyboard with MS Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, which is USB only. New keyboard does not activate Function/Enter keys at startup until blue screen, which is too late for Startup, System Status, Safe Mode, et al.

Go to bios in motherboard configuration, sometimes called peripherals in bios find legacy support and enable it. It will help us to know which Dell do you have.

Try connecting a PS/2 keyboard (PS/2 means the round connector) and a USB mouse (flat connector). What Operating System are you using? Windows '98? Windows XP? Some other OS?

I want to change keyboards

Hi Richard,
most enhanced keyboards need a specific driver to run.
Go to the manufacturers website to download the driver. or search on Google.
You might also have to enter BIOS (accessed when the computer is booting..look for a message that tells you how to get into BIOS, or look in your user manual). Often it can be accessed by pressing the DELETE or F1 key just after you power up. The option in BIOS you may have to change is something like "enable Legacy support for USB".
Have you tried looking in the Dell support website? As you just recently(?) bought this, you can ring up Dell support centre and ask them to help.
Cheers,
Steve

Ctrl keys dont work, bought new key board and have same problem, have windows XP

First rule out drivers
- remove the keyboard driver and instruct windows to reinstall the driver

Next check for hardware issues
1. Plug this keyboard into another PC to see if the same problem persists
2. If the problem does occur it is the keyboard (get a new one if that is the case)
3. If the problem does occur then it is not the keyboard it is the port that u are plugging it into.

IS IT USB?
4. If it is a USB Keyboard, plug it into another USB port
5. If the problem persists on all USB ports on the system board, then the problem is the USB ports only IFF the keyboard works fine on another system in other USB ports

Is it PS/2?
If it is not a USB keyboard and it is a PS/2 board, again, and it works fine on another PC, then you have a defective PS/2 port on the system board.

Solution
Get a PCI card with USB ports and install it. Plug ur keyboard into that.

Dell Dimension 3100 e10 ...usb won't work

Does the system respond to boot keys (F2, F12) when the DELL logo appears? If so the problem is with Windows drivers and probably can be resolved by reinstalling or rolling back the drivers, but how? Do you have access to another keyboard? Does the system have PS/2 ports? Do you have access to a PS/2 keyboard or adapter? If boot keys work, you could also choose F8 for Last Known Good Config (XP) or System Restore (Vista).

Have you tried different ports (front if using back or visa-versa)?
Try using just keyboard or mouse to see if one has somehow shorted. Also check the ports for any sign of damage.

Keyboard stopped working

you could try getting a USB to PS/2 adapter, if you have a PS/2 port on your computer. if it is a Dell made in that last 2-3 yrs ir probably doesnt have PS/2. its worth a shot tho.
PS/2 ports are usually Green and Purple. if you do have two, you might go to your local Radio Shack and see if they have any. Let me know if it works.
About the driver, there is no driver for the keyboard, except the generic USB keyboard driver in Windows.
If the keyboard is truly dead you might just go buy another one (or trie to get one from Dell, if its under warranty).

Keyboard problems

Hi

I like to inform you that multimedia keyboards has no lock or special connection other that USB or PS/2 connection. But special multimedia keys can be assigned by its software. Make sure if you have the CD came with the keyboard if you dont have it still chance exist that you can go to manufacturer's website and obtain the software utility

Good Luck
