There are several possibilities with too many to type here so, here is a link to the Brother troubleshooting page that gives several causes for the flashing red light. When you get to the page, scroll down until you see the "lashing "paper" light.
The paper light flashing because there is some paper inside the printer. Open the front cover and remove the cartridge and look inside for the jammed paper. Remove the jammed paper and insert the cartridge , closed the front cover and switch on the printer.
It will help you to solve the problem.
Here are the led codes. Have you tried pressing the go button, and holding it down for a few seconds to reset the memory. Then press it again and see if the paper light is out.
Check also to make sure the paper setting in tray 1 is not set to undefined, but specifies your paper size. (Printer properties>Tray settings)
Then pull the tray all the way out, and look above where the paper sits for a little lever that hangs down to sense the paper. Make sure it's moving freely and not broken. Also check that there's no paper jammed in the back of the printer somewhere....
