SOURCE: Sleep

You should be able to send and recieve faxs in the sleep mode. You need to reset the machine, pull out the plug, hold down the menue key while you plug the machine in. When maintanence comes up in the display enter 01 and wait. Whwn maintanence comes up again press 99. DO NOT PRESS ANY OTHER NUMBERS OR YOU WILL DAMAGE THE MACHINE BEYOND REPAIR. Your fax is now reset and completley empty, you will have to put in your name etc and sleep mode will be set to "0" minutes

SOURCE: "Receiving Sleep" on Brother Fax 4100

The sleep mode is only a power save mode. You may not have the machine in the correct fax receive mode. If the machine is on a line by itself it needs to be set to fax only, if line is shared with a telephone it needs to be in fax/telephone, if you share the machine with an answering machine it needs to be in TAD mode, and so forth. Each time you press the MODE key it will change the receive mode. Most people hit this key by mistake and change the MODE and the unit will not pick up calls. Press the MODE key until you are in the correct mode. To make sure the machine will print, press reports and then the 1, this will print a help list. If the help list prints you know that the machine works. Then check to make sure the machine is in the correct fax receive mode.

SOURCE: Can not recieve Faxes

These machines goe into sleep mode automaticly and should exit when they detect a ring.

You MAY have a problem with your main board.

First make sure your phone cord is plugged into the correct port. There are two, line and ext. It must be plugged into line.

You can try a factory reset if that doesn't work. Unplug unit, hold menu button, plug back in and wait for lights to blink and display to read Maintenance.

Press 0 and 1

Now press 99

Now try sending to the machine again.

If this doesn't work, you likely need the unit serviced.

SOURCE: I can send but cannot recievefax. Fax is on SLEEP all the time.

The machine is set with the sleep mode as a default. The fax part can be changed to recieve a fax by pressing the fax mode button. Press it until it says Fax only, not F/T. F/T means Fax/Telephone. This mode would make it to where you have to pick up the reciever and press start when a fax comes in. The Fax only mode means it will pick up everytime a fax comes in automatically. Let me know if this was helpful. Please give my helping a rating. Thanks!

There is nowhere I can find whether I should switch on the Machine 24hr a day x 7 days a week. Or shall I swtich it off after-office-hours? Any effect on the life-span of the machine?

In a business environment most fax machines are left on 24/7......who wants to miss an order coming in because your fax was OFF. However, many fax machines can be programmed to go into a "sleep mode"...this would be in the evening when the office is closed...you still want to be able to recieve fax's if any come in..but you don't need the machine ON "fully" ready to print. Another-words, the machine is in a sleep/half power mode( because no-one is in the office to use it )..BUT if a fax comes in then the machine can still recieve it, then it "wakes-up" fully..prints out the recieved pages, and then goes back to sleep again. The details on how to program this function will be in your operators manual IF the feature is available on your model.
The benifits of programming a machine this way are pretty obvious...savings on Hydro, extended machine life ( due to machine going to sleep.) and yet you still dont miss any calls.
Pretty good hey.!!

I cannot recieve faxes

There seems to be an internal fault, either with the receive relay or another board component. Can you receive a telephone call? If so, I would say it's a component failure and should have a repair shop look at it. With this kind of problem, the repair facility will use bench testing equipment to prove it. then exchange the faulty board. If it's not under warranty, it will be expensive.
