I had problems with the screen telling me that the tape had the safety on. So I opened it up and the tape was normal to record. When I tried to put it back in the inside door closes but the tape will not go into the recorder. I have put in newly charged batteries but it will not inject the tape. (opposite of eject i think)
I'm having the same problem. According to the manual you should try hooking the camcorder up to AV power to see if the problem is the battery, which is apparently not the problem in my case. Any other troubleshooting suggestions?

bit late...but. STOP ASAP! by removing the battery, after removing battery, wait 20 seconds, re-fit battery & CLOSE the cassette door.
then wait 10 seconds, slap the closed door twice quite firmly. then open, if it opens, discard that cassette tape, clean the players head using cleaning tape.
use new cassette tape.
This is most likely a problem with one of the motor sensors and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repairedby a qualified service technician.
My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

This problem mostly happen due to defective cassette, by ejecting it, it will solve your problem. If your tape stuck-up inside, apply power, open cassette door, keep it open (around 5 sec) until it opens. and try with another cassette. It must work if not, expert are needed in this case. Good Luck
Forget the battery, the mini dv carrage assy can get out of sync and initiate the safe mode, if you noticed a problem loading the tape or have heard a gear skip sound thats the problem. The best you can do with those camcorders is keep the tape in the camcorder!!!!! That will prevent the problem and insure many good years of recording.
Hi tlaufer , According to the symptom this problem is related to the VIDEO HEAD, As you earlier try to clean the head but no results, Please open the cassette compartment of your camera (as when you insert the cassette in it) for 30 mins (remains open cassette compartment) Actueally some time due to moisture head get durt. After 30 mins insert the cassette and play it. Hope it will start work again fine. But if no result from the said procedure then there must be a damadge of point of the head, in this condition you have to replace the VIDEO HEAD assembly. Thanks for using fixya.
I'm having the exact same problem. It wont accept the cassette...only half way then errors. It will close fully without a cassette as well. hmmmmm

Load cassette, turn it on, then message says re-load cassette. Door to cassette compartment only works half way. After fiddling with power, can get the cassette door to open and close all the way, but not with cassette. Tried several brands of cassettes, no joy.
Here's what i found. I was able to clear the message by opening and
closing and ejecting the cassette. I also had to play with the battery
at the same time. Keeping the cassette door open and then pulling out
the battery. After is did this a couple of times i got the message to
clear. I too haven't used my camcorder for some time and now that the
error message has cleared the camcorder tells me that i need to clean
the heads. Hope this helps. Below is the message i found that pointed
me toward ejecting the cassette. Good Luck, i'm off to buy a tape head
cleaning cassette. An error indication (E03 or E04) appears. - (E03 or
E04 UNIT IN SAFEGUARD MODE REMOVE AND REATTACH BATTERY) This massage a
malfunction of some kind has occurred. In this case the camcorder's
functions become unusable. - Eject the cassette once and re-insert it,
then check if the indication clears. When it does, you can resume using
the camcorder. If the indication remains, consult your nearest JVC
dealer or service center
The switch is board monted and is actuated by the loading compartment when it is closed near the rear of the cabinet. It requires an extensive tear down to remove the board before the switch can be replaced. There are other problems that occur also. Does the drum spin up? If so, then the tape is rcognized but its another problem.
