Hey there ...
i seem to have a problem with my dvd writer. the drive was installed in my PC when i bought it, just so you know that there aren't any installation probs.
it doesn't recognise any formatted discs, CD/DVD/DVD+R/CD+R ...
i have used the PC doctor, but i keep getting error messages for me to insert formatted discs, but that's the problem, my drive doesn't recognise any of them.
i've tried system restore as well ... no luck there.
online compac help .. same thing.
any help will be much appreciated.

Yes, if you have a DVD writer installed, you should be able to write to DVDs. What happens when you try? If you look at the DVD writer in the Device Manager, does it have any sort of error or warning? Do you have the correct driver installed for the DVD writer?
I suppose your's is a SATA drive. Disconnect all the sata cables except for the Hard Disk and that of the Writer in question. Boot up and check if the drives works. If not take pains and try installing the drive in another PC (one of your friends'). If it still has the same problem check with where you bought it.
First double click on speaker image in right corner of your screen to see if you have MUTE disabled for all the devices and you have audio drivers to have speaker activated. Second, if you recently istalled new dvd driver it can be hardware problem. There are audio plugs (analog and digital) on back of DVD-Burner. Check if they are connected properly. Third your DVD-playback software might not supporting audio, so you might be missing audio codecs to playback DVD-audio. It depends which program you using. Maybe you need to download another program to playback DVD, for instance Windows Media Player 11.
do you have a burning software installed? you can download nero express @ majorgeeks.com
you mention that your friend gave it to you? was it working fine before? its easy to set up your new dvd writer whenever you have already installed a burning software like nero. well, you can also try clone dvd. it works very well too.
and also check for firmware upgrades for your dvd writer...you can find it here...
