What size is the memory card. If it's larger than 4GB then it won't work in the 5118. Try using another card. Don't format it in your computer but do format it in the camera before trying to take pictures.
Have you tried a different card, that may help. Plus, there are cameras that will not "like" certain cards. If the card is...let's say...an 8 gig...some cameras can't read that or even write to it. Try a different card and a 1 or 2 gig card too. Good Luck.
Sounds like you will need to format the memory card. This will permanently erase all the data from the card and then you will be able to use it again. To format the card: Press the Menu button - right arrow to Setup - right arrow to Format- You will see format yes or no. Choose Yes and press ok. This will clear the write protect message and the card can be used again.
You mentioned in your post "the above camera", but I can't find the make/model of your camera? Check on the manufacturer's
website to see what the largest capacity card can be used in your camera. Knowing the make/model and searching for the message on the internet can yield better answers to your question.

The memory card needs to be formatted by the camera. The card can be formatted in section 1 of the playback menu. Formatting will erase all data from the card.
