My print text is coming out of the printer blurred! Never had this problem.

I have the same problem. It just started about two weeks ago, about three months after the one year warranty ended. I have printed about 11,000 pages and replaced the maintenance kit twice. Now my pages are coming out blurry. Not every page. The problem mostly seems to be the first few pages of a job, then I have to go back and reprint those. It is very annoying and wasteful of paper, ink, and time.

Xerox support is very poor. You have to pay them to solve problems with THEIR printers.

I have the same problem. It will not help even if you use the printer's cleaning procedures wasting a dozen pages. When I need to print say 12 copies, I print 14. The first 2 is almost for sure worthlessly blurry.

    Mine is Xerox Phaser 8560

mi problema es con una Phaser 8400 impresiones borrosas he seguido los pasos el disco encoder tenia aceite lo he limpiado y parece se ha solucionado

The solution above regarding the oil contaminated drum is correct. I eventually called in a Xerox repair person, and that's exactly what he said the problem was, and exactly what he did. I'm not sure I would want to try it myself incase I screwed it up, but it did solve the problem. Thanks for the post.

There is an encoder on the end of the drum and some of the lubricant from the maintenance kit seeps into.
That encoder will need to be cleaned well or replaced.

    Here is the engineering note.

Blurry Prints Caused by Oil-Contaminated Drum Encoder. Oil on the Encoder Wheel causes Drum Rotation Position problems

Oil on the drum encoder's disk produces erroneous positioning signals to the electronics module. This results in the drum rotating at the wrong speed during imaging. The resulting prints appear blurry, with the image distorted in the Y-axis, vertical direction. Figure 1 illustrates the problem. Horizontal, X-axis printhead movement is not affected.

  • Rick Kasper Apr 25, 2008

The problem is caused by oil migrating from the drum assembly's bearing and contaminating the encoder disk as shown in Figure 2. By design the encoder disk is immune to some contamination, but too much contamination overwhelms the system.

    SOLUTION: Fixed! Did not fix.

Carefully disassemble the drum encoder?s cover to access the encoder disk and then clean the disk.

    1. Turn off the printer.

    2. Remove the right side cover.

    3. Remove the drum fan.

    4. Disconnect the drum assembly's encoder wiring harness from the I/O board. Disconnect the drum heater wiring harness from the drum relay board.

NOTE: Observe for reassembly how the AC wiring harness routes thru the encoder disk cover and the heater frame.

    5. Free the encoder wiring from the encoder cover.

Carefully pry off the transparent encoder cover by releasing its five snap-fit latches

  • Rick Kasper Apr 26, 2008

    1. Gently feed the AC wiring thru the encoder cover to move the cover out of the way.

    2. With a cleaning swab, gently clean the oil off the encoder disk. If available, use Xerox cleaning fluid (p.n. 008R90176) to "cut" the oil.

    3. Carefully reassembly the drum encoder. Be sure to correctly route the drum heater AC wiring thru the encoder disk cover and the heater frame.

    4. Print some test prints.

If cleaning repairs are not effective, replace the drum assembly,

Let me point directly to the common problem that causes print qualities. Please consider the drum's life, you may need to replace it. If you can managed to print the machine diagnostic and counters. You can see the records of all moving parts' and consumables. Have a nice day.

The Xerox support site indicates there is a paper jam to the printer, so you should check the paper tray, front and exit cover for any jammed paper then power off and back on the printer. Have a look here:

PDF documents do not print completely on my Xerox Phaser 8500

I am having the same problem. Sometimes my Xerox Phaser 8500 prints a PDF or web page fine, and other times I get pages and pages of what looks like PostScript code. I thought I had installed the most recent printer drivers, We are using primarily Macs with OS 10.4 or 10.5. One recent change is that we connected the printer to an Airport Express using a USB cable, which is sweet when it works correctly....any ideas???

Phaser 8500N Text looks like a shadow or an echo effect

there is an encoder on the end of the drum drive shaft. located on the right frame of the machine.
It becomes contaminated with the silicon lubricant from the maintenance kit, and off the rotating drum.
You remove the power from the machine, remove the encoder, and flush it thoroughly with alcohol. Then give it time to dry well, and put it back on the shaft. That WILL correct that problem. It is possible the encoder is bad, but I really do not suspect that because your problem is intermittent. But that is your problem, I guarantee it.

If you have Warranty Still, CALL XEROX!!!, That error message indicates that you have a failed temprature sensor inside the print-head, 90% chance Xerox will have to replace print-head. Print head is VERY expensive to replace out of pocket ($500-800+)

Phaser 8500

That is a print head movement fault.
There are 2 things that normally cause that. One is the print head pivot block becomes contaminated with ink, the other is the wiper blade tacks to the print head.
If you want instructions let me know.
