Question about Brother MFC-5840CN All-In-One InkJet Printer

Brother MFC 210C series ink replaced

I replaced the black ink in my Brother MFC 210 colour printer. It will not stop telling me ther other cartridges are empty, but I haven't filled them yet. Can I continue using the printer with just the black cartridge? So far the machine will not stop displaying the 'empty ink' message and will not print anything. Please advise.

The printer continually sends a message out of ink. With a brand new cartridge sends the same message. The printer won't recognize ink 1/2 full

I have a Brother BLC 103 printer. The black ink cartridge is nearly empty. I wish to replace that cartridge. I can't figure out how to remove The exterior plastic covering of the cartridge.

The brother machines require ink in all the cartridges as it is always flushing ink through the heads to "clean" it. This means you must have ink in all cartridges at all times unfortunately or the brother will not work. Even if you could somehow get it to work it could damage your printhead anyway.

Good Luck

When it comes time to replace my ink cartridges on my Brother MFC-210C, do I have to replace the color cartridges too, or can I just replace the black ink cartridge?

Its depending on the Ink Level. You will be able to see the Ink level if you use this with your Computer/Laptop. It should have the installed Printer Management Software. It will show you.

Try cleaning the black printer heads several times in a row, at least 5 times then print a black document with best quality setting.
Press the ink button, then down to select select cleaning and then press menu/set and menu/set again to select black.

I replaced the inkjet cartridges in a Brother 210c All in One and it still shows low ink levels in the color cartridges (Black is fine). Where do I need to troubleshoot?

Just unplug the machine and plug it back in while you hold the stop key for about 10 seconds. Usually clears up and resets ink levels.

Check your ink cartridge if they are properly installed.

Check your print settings.

Make sure your ink cartridge are not empty.

Replace your ink with the original Brother ink cartridge.

MFC does not recognise the new black ink cartridge.

Disconnect power supply and USB lead (leave disconnected for 10 min). Repeat this for each colour that is not working and hey presto the LCD readout will revert to normal and you will be able to print again. Happy Christmas! Hope this works for you (worked for me)

My MFC-210C cannot not print black

Hi ssly96

It is possible that your colour cartridge (that also has black ink in it) is low on same. Have you tried to print with the printer setting to grey scale or black only. This should fix the problem. If it does not, then please get back to me here and I will look into it further.

Printer not printing

Unfortunately, like most multi cartridge ink jet printers when one ink is empty the printer will cease printing regardless of whether you just want to print in black and white and you have plenty of black ink left. I have heard of people tricking the printer into believing the cartridge is full by placing coloured tape etc in front of the ink sensing device but I am not sure how the Brother senses the ink levels as i have some aftermarket ink cartridges for mine which seem to be completely non-opaque (unlike the originals). The need to have colour cartridges in even if you only ever print with black ink is good news for Brother as the MFC-210c uses a large amount of ink during it's routine cleaning cycles (that you cant stop) and will empty all 3 cartridges in under 6 months without ever printer a single drop of colour ink. Sorry about all the bad news, at least your not alone......
