Canon S2 problems

My Canon S2 will not turn on and take pictures. It will turn on and display pictures. No button features work nor does the lens extend. The zoom does not work on the displayed photo.

Is there a way to "reset" camera from the buttons?

Thanks for your time.

I turn it on to a black screen...it does display pictures

My camera won't turn on- the sceen is black so I can't take photos. The lens does come out. I can view photos and zoom in and out.

I changed the batteries with the same results so I don't think it is a battery problem. A few weeks ago, this happened also and I shut if off and on several times and it finally worked but not this last weekend. It seems to be a permanent problem now !!!

My camera turns on but screen is black. LCD screen has been black awhile, now I get no images at all. Help!

I have the same problem with my S21S. A long time ago, I tried to find-out what size SD cards would work on this camera. Since there was NOTHING listed in the specifications, I tried a 4GB card. The camera simply would not recognise it, but worked fine when I returned the 1GB card to it. A few days ago, I popped-in a 2GB card to see if that would work. The camera seemed to accept it, and created a directory on it, but this is when my screen went blank. the only thing that is constantly present is a small hand symbol. The stored images can be displayed, and the menus work... I think its locked-up. Is there an "all reset" button, or sequence somewhere? I tried the "15 second exposure - pop-out the batteries" fix about 97 times; next I'm going to slam it against the wall...!

I just posted the same problem, camera turns on but no image in LCD or eye view window. I read another solution and it worked, for the eye view....open and close battery door several times while camera is on, and it's working. I still have no LCD image when shooting, only viewing.

Low battery power ? (rechargeables do not last forever).

Try a brand new set of batteries

No picture in the display, this is a canon powershot S2

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras, particularly for the S2 IS. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

My Canon S2 IS works fine except the display will not provide picture viewing capability when I turn the camera on for picture taking. It will display photos from the memory card. The viewer is black for...

Your camera has the know issue of Stuck shutter, whichhappens after some time (weeks or months) thata camera is notused.

Unfortunately the repair of it requires a complete disassembly of the camera, including the lens, fix it, and then put back together everything.

Definitely requires th skills, tools and experience to do it, so it's recommended that a professional camera repair center is performing this type of repair.

If you look for a reliable and low cost repair service for it, you can look in ebay for such repair services.

Example, look for seller ID Great_items_2004 or with the keywords "Shutter black S2".

Cannon PowerShot S2 IS lens is stuck

I have the exact same problem, took it completely apart removed the zoom motor, physically turned the zoom gear and retracted the lens, reinstalled the motor, put it all back together, and found that I had the same problem and the lens wouldn't move out, so im pretty certain that the motor is bad, as the lens moves smoothly once the motor is not attached to it... looking for a replacement motor as i type...

Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital... E18 Problem

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

E 18 problem

This error is caused by a faulty lens motor, contaminated transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this and it requires service from Canon or other repair facility.

It sounds like your shutter has become stuck closed. Normally the shutter stays open while you compose the pictures and then closes when you hit the button to take the picture allowing the image sensor to record what it saw at that moment. If it stays closed you will not see any image at all, but the normal icons and text on your camera's display will still show. The same symptoms can also be caused by a failed image sensor, although this is less common. Freeing a stuck shutter requires disassembly of the camera and lens assembly. Check with your manufacturer for recalls and/or warranty support. If they cannot help you for free there are repair providers online who can work on your camera. David Millier Advance Camera Repair

My lens won't come out.

It sound like the lens mechanism was damaged during camera's drop. Only way (to my regret)is to sent it to be repaired in a professional lab.
