the auto-prtect was something that always would appear whebn you frist turned on the unit. it was a matter hitting to buttons a the same time to fix it but i cant remember what they were. this unit is from 1999. so its an older unit but i only used it 4 times or so i know its not an internal problem

There are two small transistors in side of the receiver, that are not working, if you are daring enough, go ahead and try to find out which ones they are, or find a repair tech that is willing to do it, as this requires surgical soldering skills to fix.

Sony STR DE835 receiver - no sound from speakers and headphone jack

The problem is in the audio output semiconductors, they have shorted causing the fuses to blow and it is in auto protect mode to prevent further damage. I recommend a professional to assess.

When i turn up volume on receiver it display protected and then i loose sound on my sony str-d865 receiver

That's a protection circuit in the output of the speakers. It indicates a short, or abnormally low resistance of the speaker itself. Disconnect the speaker wires from the unit, and see if the message goes away. If it did, you have a problem with your wiring, or the speaker itself.

PROTECT MESSAGE

It senses an error or problem and shuts down. Try disconnecting all the cables and wires attached to it. Try it again. If it still shows protect message, it is an internal fault and requires a repair shop. If it clears up, then the problem may be a shorted speaker wire. Correct the short when reconnecting the speakers.

My sony receiver will turn on but not work

This "protection" mechanism is causing your speakers to go silent. Check the back of your receiver for loose/disconnected or shorted wires. Your receiver may have a TEST button that will tell you whether there's a problem with your connections.
After having checked/reconnected all speaker wires, run the test by pressing the button. Sound will come from each of the speakers, usually clockwise and go round all speakers until you press the button again.
Should there be a problem, the display will tell you whether the polarity is wrong, there's no connection, etc. If the messages don't make sense to you, go to your user's manual for an explanation.
Good luck!

Flashing message on my reciever

PROTECT, PROTECTOR or the letter P is flashing in the display of the A/V receiver. Solution
sp.gif sp.gif Follow the steps below to troubleshoot if the word PROTECT or PROTECTOR is flashing on the A/V receivers display.
  1. Check the speaker wires and speakers for proper connections.
  2. Reduce the volume level. IMPORTANT: Ifthe receiver is played back at maximum volume level it may enter theprotect mode. Maximum volume listening will cause the receiver to runvery hot and may drain the output capacitors.
  3. Disable the surround sound option if both the A and B speakers are being used simultaneously.
  4. Ensure the top of the receiver has proper ventilation to keep it from overheating.
  5. If the message only occurs when using a DVD player, the sampling frequency may be set too high. IMPORTANT: Somereceivers provide compatibility with the higher sampling frequenciesthrough alternate connections. Consult the owners manual for specificinformation.
  6. Unplug the AC power cord for about 1 to 2 hours to reset the output transformers.
If the issue is still unresolved, service may be required. The Sony® eService Web site at http://eservice.sony.com/ can assist you in obtaining service from a Sony Service Center or locating a Sony Authorized Servicer.

Getting a "Protect" message in the display which then shuts down

The speaker wires were al little frayed, so I cut and stripped new 3/8" leads and when re-inserted the receiver worked fine. The problem was a short from the frayed wires touching either the back of the receiver or some other metal near the terminal.
