Question about Radio Communications

2 Answers

Safety I run an after school program, and we have a bin of 2-way radios that don't work anymore. Would it be safe to give the kids screwdrivers and let them open up the radios to see what's inside? Is there anything that would possibly harm them?

Hi,

Yes it would be safe of course assuming they have been briefed on the safe handling of tools. Other than the possibility of leaking batteries (if left inside for sometime) there should be nothing "that"dangerous. Again, they should be forewarned of this possibility and sharp objects such as component pins.

Hope that this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Hi there

how old are the kids? kids holding screwdrivers is a no no without someone watching over them.

Opening the radio is fine, but avoid Choking hazards like the screws, internal components ...etc.

if the battery is still present, dont give it to the kids to avoid chemical poisoning.

hope this helps.

What is the frequency for this radio what ever came with it

These are programmable radios that require Motorola software and programing equipment that is only available through a Motorola dealer. A reputable dealer should be able to help you reprogram the radios with the appropriate frequencies and codes for your use.

We have these vertex 2 way radios in 55 school busses and they do not work well at all. Static and can't even talk to the other busses very well

You need to work with the dealer who provided the radios. It's possible you're too far apart, or the radios weren't properly programmed. In any case, this is a "commercial" radio application and requires properly authorized personnel to maintain or correct the problem.

How to change the squelch on mtx8000

You can always have a radio receive. To transmit require an FCC License, and you need authorization to "Talk" to Public Safety. There are large fines and possible jail time to talk on channels you are not authorized for, especially Public Safety. Sadly, your radio is programmed to monitor only when the button is held down. The frequencies in your area working are a lucky coincidence. Take it to an Authorized Motorola Dealer and pay to have it reprogrammed. Radio is not field programmable. Hold onto your wallet, they are expensive to have programmed. You should have bought a high end digital scanner.

How to set channels to scan on motorola ht 1000

On the HT1000, there is an A, B, C toggle switch just under the On/OFF/Volume control knob.

When set to A, the radio is IN the scan mode.

When set to B it is NOT in the scan mode.

When switched to C, it is in the scan program mode. There is a green button on the left side above the PTT switch. When you set it to C, you switch the CHANNEL SELECT knob to the desired freq you want to add to the scan list. When there, you push the green button. ONE push gives you a red indicator light on the top of the radio. A 2nd push gives you a GREEN light displayed. A 3rd push gives you NOTHING lit up.

The 1st push (RED light) means you have selected THIS freq as your PRIORITY channel of your scan list when scanning.

The 2nd push (GREEN light) means it is just IN the list, not as a priority channel.

NO light means it is NOT entered into the scan list.

Once you have your list set up, simply flip the A,B,C switch back up to A and you're scanning what you selected.

HOWEVER All of the above is dependent on whether or not the ORIGINAL setup programming from the factory set the radio up for these features to work. If it WASN'T set up that way, you'll have to have it reprogrammed to activate the buttons and the toggle switch for those features to work.

GP300 frequency programing

Here is what you would need: RIB (radio interface box), HKN9857 programming cable and HVN9128 programming software. You are correct the software is only capable of running on a DOS box, such as a 286 or 386. The software mentioned is Motorola proprietary and is available to Authorized Motorola dealers by subscription only.

The book also shows a cloning cable HKN9755 as being available. Don't know anymore details on it.

Lastly, the cost of programming to your FCC assigned frequencies would be approx. $15 per radio, and less for cloning like models. It might be less expensive to have the radio programmed by a dealer. Just an FYI.

Best regards

2 Way Radios not talking to one another

Kids will be kids, and if you also remember back when you were a kid, you probably did the sames things the kids did. (I know I did)
Kids like to play with the knobs, push buttons, turn the dial...Maybe if you checked to see that Both radios are set to the same frequency.
Check the Channel & Interference Eliminator Codes. The dials are located under the battery compartment.
Good Luck, and don't yell at them...........

Getting radios on same frequency

You will need to have a radio dealer determine if the radios are compatible, and then if they are compatible, you can have one set programmed to match the others.

After reading programming Radio Died

Unfortunately you have a corrupted code plug. The radio will need to be serviced to clear the corruption. Or if you have a clean copy of the original programming, you can try reprogramming it. (Note: Do not use the version you had saved which led to the corruption.)
