On a plasma, what board would be responsible for performing convergence?

  • Anonymous Jan 08, 2010

Need your opinion on this please!

This is a plasma and initially, power led was blinking 2 times. Service manual suggests D-Board.

So, replaced D-board. Then unit would still not turn on and began to blink 10 times.

Service manual on 10 blinks suggests A-Board. I replaced A-board. Now unit back to blinking 2 times again.

Any suggestions? Could this still be caused by faulty components on power supply or what?

Hi,
Plasma TV does not have such thing like convergence or does not require convergence.
Plasma TV is flat screen and every pixel in plasma panel produce its own light to make color picture.
Convergence section is part of old fashioned rear projection TVs that has 3 CRTs to project color image on front screen of TV.
Hope this info will help you.
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

Picture not in focus

Devices: All projection TV's (HD or analog), especially Samsung

If its a Samsung HCN653W (or similar model), the first thing to try is the menu option named "Magic Focus", which tunes the set's focus.

Otherwise, it sounds like a job for a convergence. Perform a convergence procedure on your TV, and if the problem recurs within a few days/weeks, then your TV's 'convergence amplifier' board (aka "convergence amp board") is starting to fail.
This board may fail completely, in which case, your convergence procedure will fail to improve the picture.
A "convergence procedure" can be performed entirely by just using the appropriate setup menu option and your remote control.
This board may partially fail, in which case your convergence procedure will properly converge the Red, Blue, Green colors on just part of the screen, whereas a properly functioning convergence amp board will allow complete convergence of the colors across the entire screen.
Your TV's convergence procedure instructions will be found in your TV's Owners Manual.
At least one Projection TV manufacturer recommends that the consumer perform a convergence procedure every 30 days, but most TV owners find that excessive, and might only do one when (a) there's an evident color convergence problem in any part of the picture, or (b) once every 3-6 months.

how-to instructions: www.ehow.com/how_2034880_perform-convergence--tv.html

cost to you: $zero
.

If the convergence amp board is bad, cost for a service call would be $300 (USD) plus $100 for a new board plus 50% markup on parts = about $450 (USD)
Cost to order a new board online: about $100 (USD) + shipping + sales tax.
Alternatively, if you can solder/desolder STK's (Power Amplifier Integrated Circuits), one can repair a convergence amp board for as little as $30 (USD) or so.

Sometimes a shadow appears when it changes scene and the black is a bit hazy

This problem happens to plasma TVs usually due to the Z SUS part, Z SUS board and Z Drive Board, malfunctioning. The Z SUS is responsible in resetting the screen for the next picture to appear. If it malfunctions, the image of the previous picture freezes and appears as shadow. Usually, the last image on the screen when you turned the unit off appears when you turn it back on before the actual picture appears.
The usual fix for this is alignment. That is, adjusting the voltages that powers the boards to an appropriate value that is indicated on the back of the panel. You may need the service of a qualified technician to perform the alignment.
I hope you find this information helpful.

Mitsubishi 1080 hd

check and re-solder the connections on the 2 convergence ICs in the middle power board. they are going to be attaches to the biggest heat-sink in the tv. if the re-soldering doesn't fix then replace with STK392-570 i would replace both but if you look at the board you should be able to figure out which chip is responsible for the vertical and which is the horizontal convergence. each IC converges all 3 colors but one is responsible for one axis.

Samsung 46in.

This is a Plasma TV set, there is no convergence adjustments on this set. the convergence adjustments are for tube type projection TV sets. You could have a few problems with your TV. You could have a bad color whell assembly, a bad light engine assy. or a problem with the main board. This is not a set a that some who is not trained on plasma TV sets should attempt to troubleshoot and or repair. depending on how old this set is, it may still be under warranty. if it is not, call out only a Samsung authorized servicer, as they will have the boards and proper tools to service this TV. Good Luck
