High pich whine from CT-36D32 36" TV (by 2 users)

posted by jdosk on Feb 05, 2008

CT-36D32 36" TV This is my T.V. I moved it, watched the super bowl and moved it back. One city block in an Astro with good suspension and no bumps. I took it easy. I pressed power on the remote and got a high pitch whining tone constant from the lower back left of the tv. No degauss no screen flicker no Sound nothing but That noise. I can unplug it and the releay drops out and the noise goes away. Plug it in, I hear the relay engage then a halfway degauss. Not even a flicker in the screen in the dark of the night... How wird is this???? jdosk@bellsouth.net

I have narrowed the noise down to the open coil transformer looking thing that sits virtical to the front of the board bang in the middle. Front being toward the manual switches. This is the only coil that sits upright and the coils are wraped horizontaly. I assume that this is some sort of step up transformer. I sure don't know what is causing the osolations like that. ???? The Hi voltage Trasistor is not geting warm that is in close proximity of it.

Got the meter, Don't really know whitch is the fly back. I do know what transformer is osolating in the HOT part of the main board. What could be shorted? I have found new board and snap on part that is part of the HOT bout 400 bucks. Would that fixit?

What would it look like? I have soldered all the joints that looked bad. From what I read you are saying That the transitor is bad? not sure what to snach off the board and test. I know by the well marking of the board, which is the HOT area of the board... I do see a large Hi voltage looking darlington that has 4 legs on it. Could that be it...?

I have the same problem with mine. I called sears service and they told me that it would cost 600 to 700 to fix, I then had to pay a 100.00 service call. I asked what caused this and the tech said that dust over the board prevented it from cooling down causing the problem. I have had this tv for just 6 years and it sure should have lasted longer that this, heck I still have tvs 20 + years old that still work. If any one can help with this repair please let me know. I refuse to just toss it into the trash can

jdosk-the high pitch noise you hear is generally from the horizontal output being shorted, the horizontal output is usually near the flyback transformer, get a digital multimeter to checkthis part.Let me know I'll try to help. cooltek Feb.16/08
