Question about Toshiba TP61H60 61" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

"noisy" convergence I used to be a TV repairman back in the days of vacuum tubes. I can only describe this problem as the red convergence goes bad in a random flickering fashion after the set has been on for some time. How is convergence accomplished in this tv? Is there a module that can be replaced?

Thanks, I suspected as much. Are these parts readily available? If so where do you suggest? Are these located on the main circuit board? Can you tell me where? Are board layouts and schematics available anywhere?

  • Douglas Mader Feb 06, 2008

Thanks. I presume these are in sockets? How can they be identified or located? Are any other associated circuit parts likely to need replacement?

  • Douglas Mader Feb 07, 2008

I have been reading other DIY boards and some refer to STK392-150, 160, 180, IC's that are direct replacements for the original 110, 110T but run cooler. Do you know if Toshiba recommends this change?

  • Douglas Mader Feb 07, 2008

partstore lists the STK392-110T for $40. You think that is a good one?

The output STK ICs in the convergence circuit need to be replace, maybe a few associated low value resistors, fuse resistors etc.
These IC's are mounted on a heatsink, clean the are and apply thermal compound before installing the new ones.
Let me know if you need any more assistance.

  • Priya darshan Feb 06, 2008

No u don't need any other replacements

  • Priya darshan Feb 06, 2008

if replacing this component don't use cheap ones, there are a lot of
inferior components on the market, you should pay approx $25 not $6 for
    them.

You could just as easierly have a simple bad solder joint that needs to be resoldered.

If you are satisfied with my solution then please don't forget to rate me as fixya..

  • Priya darshan Feb 07, 2008

Yes it is a goodone and if you think you can solder it by ur self then please go ahead..
Cuz toshiba will charge lots bucks for this it will be anything between $200-$300.And if u feel it u can't do it then call toshiba..

Goodluck once again and please don't forget to rate me as fixya..

The screen won't turn on. But, whenever you press the on button it turns red like it is turned on. What's wrong? And how can I fix this?

A very common problem with this TV model. You have a bad signal module or a bad small signal board. Leave your TV unplugged for a few days or a week. Then plug this TV and power on. If the TV comes on and plays well for a few seconds and goes out, the SSB needs replaced. The second thing would be to pull the back cover off. If TV is already on,you can see the rear filaments on the TV tubes lit. Still no picture..then your the signal module is bad and the Convergence ICs and resistors will need replaced. This is a good starting point. Definitely one of these two problems.

The red and blue convergence ICs are bad. Probably only the red one is bad, but you should change both to be sure the other doesn't go out the following week. Go to tritronicsinc.com for the the replacement chips. The chips should be installed by someone with soldering experience as they have about 20 pins each.

Auto focus problem

The auto focus is not actually focusing the tv. When it is running it is adjusting the convergence. Most likely the repairman that replaced your tuner didn't plug the sensor wires back in. I would call him back out and have him hook it back up.

There should be a convergence menu in the tv. Use the samsung remote and go into the menu and look for convergence.

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Toshiba 50H81 manual convergence

are you sure it's yoke? these are know for bad convergence amp ic's
other wise it's a screw and glue holding the yoke in place loose the screw and try to break the glue with out breaking the plastic on the yoke, the other thing you can do is adjust the magnets which have tabs on the yoke. i would mark the position's of everything on the tube with a sharpie so you can get it back to start.
