turns out there was recognition but the HD needed to be reformatted - thanks

  • jim1328 Feb 06, 2008

True! New problem - HD won't reformat completely; gets to "100%" and then locks up, won't "quick format" at all. Any thoughts?

  • jim1328 Feb 06, 2008

did all that - didn't work

  • jim1328 Feb 07, 2008

did that - no luck. I did notice that in the properties window it shows format as "RAW" as opposed to "NTFS"...does "RAW" mean unformatted or stand for something else?

This HD came from a friend who is a MAC user, fyi.

What can I try from here?

  • anon13333 May 08, 2008

I got a maxtor external hard drive that was loaded with pictures using mac. I am using windows xp and my computer shows the external drive in computer management section as unallocated. I cannot see what is on the external hard drive. Please help so that I view the picutures that are the drive.

To ba able to recognize the device you must secure that the connections between the hhd and cables to other device must be properly and in tact.

if it doenst recognize it, restart your computer withour removing the device and youll see the computer recognize it.

How to connect firewires of the HD?

You just need to plug one end of the firewire (IEEE 1394) cable into the external hard drive and the other end in the slot on the computer marked IEEE 1394. Sometimes you have a IEEE 1394 slot on the front panel, and sometimes it's just on the back of the PC.

If you find you don't have a firewire (IEEE 1394) port on your PC then you will need to get adapter that will change the firewire to a usb. If you have trouble finding one of those then install a card like this in your desktop:

Makes "clicking" noise and will not mount

that is a common noise when your HD just failed it can be internal or external most of them work the same way, there is 2 metal readers that hover on top of the actual disks to read the information. Those readers get stuck or keep going back and forward trying to read (that is the clicking noise) a way to try to fix the problem (it works sometimes) is replacing the circuit board attached to the hard drive (inside the metal enclosure) and you have to find one with the same characteristics as the one you have now. sometimes when we really need to recover the information we try that and it may, may not work

if it works for you, don't forget to rate me

How to connect IEEE 1394 (4 pin) to computer

IEEE 1394 is commonly referred to as Firewire. Your Dell doesn't support it. You will have to purchase a firewire adapter card and install it and its drivers into your computer.

Download PV-GS39 cam recorder drivers

Hello. I also have the PV-GS39. I had the same problem as you have, here is what I DID to resolve my problem.

1.Go to: http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/Cameras-Camcorders/Camcorders/MiniDV-Camcorders/Drivers-Downloads/model.PV-GS39.D

the above link will take you RIGHT to the web page to download the PV-GS39 Software & Drivers that YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE. But if you have WINDOWS VISTA then you can use the WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER software that is ALREADY PRE-INSTALLED on your PC then you will NOT have to download the software from the above link.

2. You HAVE TO have a: FIREWIRE IEEE 1394 PCMCIA NOTEBOOK CARD. I got mine at: Best Buy for: $53.86 with taxes. the name of this card is: DYNEX FIREWIRE IEEE 1394 PCMCIA NOTEBOOK CARD.

3. You ALSO hae to buy the CORD that connects to the PV-GS39 and the DYNEX FIREWIRE IEEE 1394 PCMCIA NOTEBOOK CARD, the cord costs $36.79 ALSO at Best Buy.

I did ALL 3 of the above and now I'm copying my movies and videos from my tape in my camcorder onto my PC and BURNING the video onto DVD/CD Disks.

If you have any questions, you can email me at: uggyredmonster@comcast.net.

XP freezes on startup from Firewire external HD

This sounds silly but its true...the m-audio 410 doesn't work with windows, especially not with vista. It works on mac but barely. I've been screwing with one for 3-4 yrs now and have gone through a few that died and never had one with 0 problems, always too many to count. It works on macs but barely. it still has tons of problems on the latest and greatest. Bottom line - m-audio is crying because they're totally incompetent at making cards... or they don't give a rats a** about anyone not spending over $500.

Can I use Firewire to transfer video?

Your computer must be equipped with an IEEE 1394 (Firewire) interface and video capture software. Provided you have both of these, follow the directions below. To connect your digital camcorder to your computer using IEEE1394, follow these steps: 1. Connect the IEEE 1394 interface on your camcorder to the IEEE 1394 interface on your computer. 2. Turn on your computer. 3. Turn on your camcorder. 4. Start the video capture software on the computer. Image capture should begin provided the computer hardware and software are configured correctly. If image capture does not begin, you must consult the computer or capture card manufacturer for assistance. Note: If you don't have an IEEE 1394 interface on your computer, you can buy an IEEE 1394 pci card at your local computer store that will work with most current computers.
