turns out there was recognition but the HD needed to be reformatted - thanks

  • jim1328 Feb 06, 2008

True! New problem - HD won't reformat completely; gets to "100%" and then locks up, won't "quick format" at all. Any thoughts?

  • jim1328 Feb 06, 2008

did all that - didn't work

  • jim1328 Feb 07, 2008

did that - no luck. I did notice that in the properties window it shows format as "RAW" as opposed to "NTFS"...does "RAW" mean unformatted or stand for something else?

This HD came from a friend who is a MAC user, fyi.

What can I try from here?

To ba able to recognize the device you must secure that the connections between the hhd and cables to other device must be properly and in tact.

if it doenst recognize it, restart your computer withour removing the device and youll see the computer recognize it.

How to connect firewires of the HD?

You just need to plug one end of the firewire (IEEE 1394) cable into the external hard drive and the other end in the slot on the computer marked IEEE 1394. Sometimes you have a IEEE 1394 slot on the front panel, and sometimes it's just on the back of the PC.

If you find you don't have a firewire (IEEE 1394) port on your PC then you will need to get adapter that will change the firewire to a usb. If you have trouble finding one of those then install a card like this in your desktop:

I want to reuse an ezquest cobra 250 gig external drive for time machine on a G5 powermac. the drive has files on it which are locked down. I want to wipe the drive and use it for back up. can this be...

Go to your applications folder and then to the utilities folder, find the application disk utility and then double click on it. Select your hard drive on the left hand column and then click on the erase button and select the format you require for the drive. Usually for a mac only backup you would use the format of Mac OS extended (journaled) or if you want to use the drive for mac and PC use the MS-DOS (Fat) option then click erase. Hope this helps.

Cannot open

1 of 2 possible problems. You have a bad USB cord or the controller card wentt out in the external drive. If cord works w/another peice of hardware, then it's controller card. To test if HD is bad, remove it from the case and connect it to your pc via SATA cable to mother board and use power from pc power supply. If you can access the HD here, just purchase a new external closure.Don't spend a lot of money, they're relitively inexpensive. If you don't have the necessary cabling, you might need to visit a local reair shop or friend that has the ability and cabling. Most all pc repair shops will check the HD out to see if its works and also carry the external HD cases.

Makes "clicking" noise and will not mount

that is a common noise when your HD just failed it can be internal or external most of them work the same way, there is 2 metal readers that hover on top of the actual disks to read the information. Those readers get stuck or keep going back and forward trying to read (that is the clicking noise) a way to try to fix the problem (it works sometimes) is replacing the circuit board attached to the hard drive (inside the metal enclosure) and you have to find one with the same characteristics as the one you have now. sometimes when we really need to recover the information we try that and it may, may not work

if it works for you, don't forget to rate me

thx

FANTOM Titanium TFDF12072 120GB 7200 RPM External Hard Drive not recognized any more.

wow...so ..first to check is the bus...if you use it on a usb ...probably it is a lack of driver or the computer just messed the driver ...so ...plug it ..and run the add new hardware feature from the control panel to see if it founds it ...choose already added and check it in the list ..
Also take a look into the device manager (right clck on my computer /properties../hardware ....Here you should be able to see t in the list ...if not .., right click on computer and choose to scan for hardware changes....this will scan for devices and show you the device even if it is not installed..
also ..it may be using a raid driver that it is not installed on your computer cause you didn't used it ..do ..go to bios..default the system by selecting optimal factory defaults ..and after that save changes by pressing F10..
restart and insert the motherboard drivers disk and install the raid driver from the list ..(I sow that some of them are on Ieee 1394 fire-wire...so ..installing a driver for the IEEE 1394 bus can be a option you have to get in mind..Just search for it on the motherboard manufactirer site...but it is built in windows since Xp..and defaulting the system ..probably make it functional..if it is the case..
if nothing works...open it and check the power supplies for each unit in part if it is multiple (hdd) and be sure they are plugged well and functional ...You should hear them work ..

If it has the black and red wires, it connects into JP2.  The other wires, which are black and green connect directly to the power supply into connector CN4. Bob
