See if you can lift agitator off and see if something is jammed under it ....like a sock or something..most unscrew at top and just lift off if this is not your problem it may be the transmission. how old is the washer if old probably cheaper to replace then to have transmission repaired(if it is transmission)
I am not sure but,I would suggest you call a good appliance repair and parts shop and tell them.They should be able to tell you if it is your transmission.I would get a price on doing it and balance it against replacing it with a good used washing machineIt may be cheaper in the long run, then spending on a transmission

I got your advice on the agitator and I was able to pull it off but there was nothing stuck under it do you think it might be the transmission? It still turns during the wash cycle but its sort of a slow stop and go turn. Its a 2002Kenmore 90series, heavy duty, super capacity plus, 3speed motor w/5 speed combinations, model no. 110.23902200
