Mapping Software I was wondering if you could purchage software from Garmin and Download it to this unit?

This issue sounds like it could be solved with a Map + Firmware Update. To get you firmware updated is a free process all you have to do is navigate to this link and download Garmins WebUpdater Software. Updating your mapping is a diffrerent story, to obtain mapping for your nuvi there is 2 options 1. is a Onetime update via DVD for 49.99 or 2. is to purchase a Lifetime Mapping Update Subscription for the cost of 89.99. Ix would reccommend a Onetime Update for your unit being an older unit. All your GPS accessories can be obtained at www.gpscity.ca or www.gpscity.com.

There is a miniUSB port on the back of the unit, to get updated mapping software you will need to purchase either a Onetime Update on DVD for 54.95 or a Lifetime Subscription for 89.95. The subscription is delivered VIA electronic download so if you have limited internet acces the Onetime Update is your only option.

You can update mapping software on most sat nav units to take into account alterations to the road network. Either from your PC, in the case of portable sat navs; or via your phones GPRS connection, in the case of phone models. Always check the level of mapping that comes with your equipment in the first place. Is it up-to-date?
. Every couple of years Garmin will release a map update, which you can get on DVD or download - you've got to pay for it though!

Map updates are free for units which are recently sold with the older maps and the new maps have been published, ie you just bought a unit in 2009 which still had 2008 maps on it after the 2009 maps had been released. Rather than recall all the units from the store shelves, they offer free updates on the mapping software. Continually updating the maps on 18 month old units is not free, there is an update charge. What is free from Garmin is the unit's software. Hope this clarifies your assumption.

There is no software for your etrex GPS to install on your computer. You can, however, purchase Garmin maps to install onto your GPS. When you purchase this mapping software, it will include a copy of Mapsource, which is used to upload and download tracks and waypoints to your unit.

2009 is the latest mapping Garmin has. If your unit is running 2008 or before, and your unit was first used within the last 60 days, you can register your unit with Garmin.com and receive a free map update.

The contours are not coming from the routes and waypoints, they are coming from the mapping software. You must load all the map segments at once to your unit. You can upload routes and waypoints separately and they will not erase the other ones already on the GPSr unit.
