How to activate my nuvi 660 using my mac and itunes or audible.com

I need help. The literature is excellent, but it tells me I don't need audible manager because itunes accepts downloads of audio books. Okay. But, how can I activate my nuvi so it will accept audible downloads directly?

I've got the same problem, with my Nuvi 770.

I can add the Audible media files when just using the Nuvi as a mass storage device, and the Nuvi can read them no problem, but I can't play as the Nuvi isn't authorized.

And I can't authorise it using iTunes, as far as I know... there's no other Mac software from Audible.

    Any ideas?

Same problem here too. I've got the audiobooks on my nuvi, but anytime I try and play them, it says the device is not authorized. I tried installing updates from Garmin, but they were only for POI's, nothing about audiobooks. I did however, find information regarding audible books and a garmin nuvi. It's called the Audible Garmin Nuvi user guide, and I think it was on Garmin's website. Anyhow, it states that it ONLY for windows XP or later versions and says nothing about Mac users.

hi i've been downloading audiobook from itunes but it says on my garmin that " device is not activated for such book" but all my music are from itunes.

    thanx

    Any answer yet?

  • Anonymous Apr 12, 2008

Nowhere on the Garmin nor Audible nor Apple web site (in their advertisements that is) is it disclosed that Audible is XP only. Only AFTER you have a problem will you discover this and even then it doesn't so up in the search functions of Audible nor Garmin. How about a little disclosure FIRST Audible and Garmin? Nah, then they wouldn't sell any of them :-) The only workaround is to install BootCamp or the like to install them from the Windows platform.

I cannot activate my nuvi 660 using my mac; therefore cannot download books to the nuvi.  Help!

  • alias4u Sep 07, 2008

    Hey,

Same issue. Mac, itunes and a 750 nuvi. Downloaded with the 3 free credits into iTunes. Authorized the puter drag and drop into the Nuvi Audiobooks folder, but getbthe same  message 'device not authorized' .... Well now what?Authorize a friend with a PC then use the manager to upload to my nuvi? I wont put the XP on my Mac so I won't use that workaround. Any other suggestions or help?

    Thanks

hm, very unpleasant. Everything works fine, I've got a nice trial subscription, downloaded some books, started listening in iTunes - only to find out at the very last moment that it wouldn't work with my nüvi 660?! I will try and find someone with a Windows machine...

I had the same problem and was able to resolve it using the procedure (listed below) from Audible technical support.  It's wordy, but the long and short of it is that you need to activate the Nuvi on a PC machine, then you can use it on the Mac.  To transfer files, open iTunes audiobook window, then drag your books of choice from that window to the Nuvi icon on the desktop.  I had no problems using this procedure.

Thank you for contacting Audible.com. On its behalf, I would like to apologize for any inconvenience and I am most committed to satisfying and resolving your inquiry to the fullest of my abilities.

As per your email I understand that you wish to use your Garmin GPS with Audible on your Mac.

Unfortunately, the Garmin is not supported on a Mac with Audible audiobooks unless it is first activated on a Windows PC. If you have access to a Windows PC please follow the requested steps below to activate it on a PC first. Once successfully activated you will be able to use your Mac to transfer your audiobooks onto it.

If you have access to a Windows PC to activate your Garmin GPS through the Audible Manager software please do the following to get started.

Make sure Audible Manager is installed in your PC, otherwise please go to: Audible Software page ( www.audible.com/software ) and download the version for Download for Windows 2000, XP, or Vista. Select Run or Save. During this installation process, a message: "If you already own an Audible Ready mobile device, please select it from the choices below", will prompt, please select Garmin GPS Devices from the list.

If Audible Manager is already installed on your PC: Launch Audible Manager, click on Devices > Add new device. You will be asked to connect to the Internet. Click Yes to connect. From the list of devices, select the Garmin GPS Devices, and click ok.

Once installed successfully now please follow the requested steps to activate your Garmin Nuvi using the Audible Manager software.

Ensure that the device is connected to the PC and Internal Memory is selected to activate the Main Memory of your GPS. Please note you may transfer your audiobooks onto the SD card as well if you have one.

Right-click the Garmin plugin in the bottom left corner of Audible Manager ( below Mobile Devices ) and choose activate.

After entering your username and password, click ok.

Once your Garmin has been successfully activated using a Windows PC you may now use your Mac to transfer your Audible audiobooks to your Gramin.

Before you can transfer your audiobooks on to your Garmin device please follow the requested steps below to download your audiobooks.

Please log into your Audible Account, Click on My Library on the top of the page next to Home, Once you are in your online library towards your right hand side, you will find a tab called "Download It". This will start your download action from our server to your computer.

This will download the selection onto your desktop and open iTunes. If the file downloads to your desktop, double click or drag the file into the iTunes library.

Connect your Garmin device to computer.

Drag the book from iTunes onto the Garmin device.

Playing Audible Files on Garmin Nüvi

From the Main Menu after powering on the Nüvi, select Travel Kit > Audible Book Player.
You can locate the title in the Audible Book Player by clicking on the Browse button. You can search all titles, or by Genre, Author, or Narrator. Select the category you would like to search by, and select the title. Press the Play button to begin enjoying your Audible selection.

Unfortunately, at this time we do not have any information regarding the Garmin GPS being supported on a Mac in the future. However, I will be glad to forward your email address to upper management so you are notified once the Garmin GPS is supported on a Mac.

As always, I hope I have met all your needs and requests, as it has been a pleasure assisting you today. If I could be of any further assistance, or answer any further questions, please let me know and I'll be happy to do so.

I too was struggling to put audio books on my Garmin nuvi from my Mac. A gentleman from Audible and I, after much effort, we were able to discover a process to successfully put audible books on to the 2595LMT from my Mac OS X 10.7.4 The GPS device must be activated on a PC first. (See instructions above.) (Make sure you have FULLY completed the process, right-clicking the Garmin plug-in below Mobile Devices and choosing activate. You will then have to re-enter your username and password, and click OK.) Once the GPS was activated on my Audible account I could accomplish audible book transfers with just my Mac. First download the audio books from the Audible Library in the ENHANCED format to the Mac. (Enhanced files are VERY large, but the Garmin nuvi 2595LMT will not recognise the other formats.)(Click the little triangle to the left of the book title to change formats.) Next attach the nuvi 2595LMT to the Mac, after a minute open Finder; then open the device "Garmin", and expand the file "Audible" (which contains several pre-loaded audio book samples). Then click on downloads on the bottom bar of the Mac and "drag and drop" the downloaded books directly from downloads to the Audible file in Garmin. (The books MUST go in to the Audible file. If one drags the downloads to the Garmin icon on the desktop, the books will join the listed items on "Garmin", but will not appear on the device, and will only play through iTunes while the nuvi is still attached to the Mac.) I have followed this procedure with five different audible books and they are fully functional on the Garmin 2595LMT.

Once you have downloaded the audible book to your Mac, it is automatically stored in iTunes as an Audio Book. Plug the Garmin into the Mac USB port and the Garmin icon will appear on your desktop. Just drag the file from iTunes to the Garmin icon and it will load. I was already set up with Audible Manager on a PC before switching to a Mac. You may have to set up your Nuvi on a PC before this process can work. If so, follow the Garmin solution in this website.

I hate to tell you guys this, but there is no solution for garmin nuvi's to work via the mac right now. I called the customer support and got transferred a couple of times and that is what they told me. The problem is not garmin but that audible.com does not have a client for the nuvi yet (but they do have one for windows).

If you get your audiobooks from somewhere other than audible.com and it still doesn't work, then it probably has the same issue.

Find a friend with a windows pc and load it up that way for now.

How do I load an mp3 (audio book) into my Garmin?

If your audio book is in mp3 format you simply connect the USB cable to your unit and then drag and drop the mp3 files into the mp3 folder on the Nuvi650 device. If the audio books are in Audible format (.aa) then drag and drop them the same way into the Audible folder. Disconnect your unit from the computer and look for your audio book in the appropriate folder (mp3 or Audible) ... and no, mp3 Audiobooks and Audible Audiobooks are not the same format.
