Windows media player can't play .wmv files

Whenever I try to play a .wmv file with windows media player, it says that the file is unsuported. I have the latest player, but it still won't play the file. I also have the latest Real player, but it also can't play .wmv files. Both players play wmv files some times, but when I download some clips with .wmv file formats from the internet, they won't play. Could someone please help me?

Thank you very much

I could play all .wmv before the realplayer upgrade. now cannot play .wmv . what is the fix? Get sound only now but just black display.
And why is realplayer always so slow to load?

I've searched for a while on this issue and one avenue that seemed promising was a mention about Vista and dual monitors versus a 2nd monitor running as a clone. I cannot clone my 2nd monitor so that's not an option for me. Do you run two monitors (wonder if that's the source of the issue)?

i believe it is a torrent wmv and that is why it will not play

  • Firstly a UPS is an abbreviation for Uninterrupted Power Supply - meaning emergency backup power in the event of a mains power failure. This is not a type of PC.
  • Secondly - Windows media player does not support every type of movie format, as Microsoft Update it from time to time, some formats will still not be supported, these are known as codecs.
  • Thirdly, codecs to support your particular format can usually be downloaded and added to Windows Media Player, however i can not think of any reason .wmv files are not supported by Windows Media Player.

You could try re-downloading the latest version of Windows Media Player from one of the links provided below.
WMP 11 will support the latest codecs, but if for some reason you find yourself needing the older version, use WMP 10.

You will most likely have to remove your current version of WMP, and you can do this by using Windows Add/Remove programs.
  1. Click on the Start menu button ( bottom left corner of your screen. )
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Click on Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Click on Windows Media Player in the list.
  5. Click Remove ( right hand side of the listing )

Microsoft WMP 11 is available by clicking on this link:

Microsoft WMP 10 is available by clicking on this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/10/default.aspx

The Windows Vista/7 driver may work. Others have managed to get the 9 to work but Dell doesn't have a Win8 driver. First are you installing the printer for the first time to the computer or did you upgrade the OS and are reinstalling the driver? If you have done an upgrade or attempted to install once before, you will need to delete any jobs in the printer queue.(Win+X > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > View Printers and Devices. Select your printer and then see what's printing. Cancel all jobs.) If you can't delete the jobs, press the Windows key and type in Command Prompt. Right click on the appropriate program and at the bottom of the screen, select Run As Administrator. Type in "net stop spooler" followed by enter (without the quotes). Follow that line with "net start spooler" again followed by pressing enter. After you see the responses, restart the computer. Then unplug the printer from the computer. Then uninstall the printer driver. (Win+X > Device Manager. Expand the Printers section. Right-click on the printer and then select uninstall driver.) Manually remove the printer from the Devices and Printers list. (Win+X > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > View Printers and Devices. Select your printer and then click Remove Device.)

The driver itself is available here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/dell-966 . Make sure that you select the x64 version if you have a 64-bit version of the OS. Most desktops and laptops currently sold have the 64-bit version of Windows 8. An older computer that was upgraded may have the 32-bit version of the OS.
Find the install file that you downloaded from the Dell site. Right click on the file and select Properties. Under the Compatibility tab, choose Always Run in Compatibility Mode for Windows 7 (use the drop-down menu to select the OS version). Click Apply and then OK to save the setting. Now double-click on the installer to run it. You will need to acknowledge the UAC to allow the program to run. You will need to repeat this Compatibility step on the Setup file after extracting the files from the downloaded file. Keep track of where the extraction places the files; my computer showed the default location of C:\dell\drivers\R165704 .
Tablets with Windows RT probably can't use the driver since it isn't offered through the Windows Store.

I hope this helps.

I have a problem to install window 98 .

Another solution is to download and install Microsoft Virtual PC in XP, create a Virtual PC drive, and install Windows 98 onto the Virtual PC drive. This works fine if you want to run Win 9X programs which don't require access to USB ports on your computer. If you need Windows 98 to have full access to all of the computer hardware, then use palaboy's solution.

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 10 WILL LOAD BUT WILL NOT RESPOND WHEN I WANT TO GO TO LIBARY OF STORED MUSIC. TRYED UPDATES, RELOADING, REINSTALLING , NOTHING WORKS , NO ERROR MESSAGES EITHER, PLEASE HELP...

Hi,

Reboot system in safe mode. It will ask to restore to previous restore point. Try to select restore point before you have installed windows media player 10. Reboot the pc and then try to install media player 10. It will be better if you run scandisk to fix file system errors. Or you can use any tools for fixing file system & windows system registery error like System Mechanic, Symantec Windoctor.

Thanks,

Vksr.

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER NOT RESPONDING..

Windows Media Player in this case has a script error that causes it not to respond on any OS platform that has yet to be fixed by updates. I have currently updated it to its fullest and it refuses to respond properly on windows xp, let alone beta versions of windows like windows 7. My suggestion is forget windows media player 11 and go download VLC player which plays more things off the bat anyways. Its free and easy and small. There is also any number of other media players like Realplayer, Quicktime, or Windows Media Player Classic.
