if your computer came with a motherboard disc the sound drivers could be on it you might have to uninstall then restart your computer then reinstall both the sound drivers and the sound card make sure you have both of these devices backed up to a disc before uninstalling a yellow? question mark means you need to install/update driver to do this right click to install driver also click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to sound,video and game controllers you might see a yellow question mark? Right click to reinstall drivers click start control panel sounds and audio,volume,advanced,speakers select appropriate speakers also audio you will find 3 drop down lists make sure you have the correct settingsthere also click start control panel sounds and audio devices you can adjust the volume there also select speaker volume you can change your settings there you can also tick in the box place icon in taskbar if his does not fix the problem
have you tried this control panel sounds and audio,volume,advanced,speakers select the appropriate speakers from the drop down list or navigate to the device manager scroll to system devices + to expand,system speaker right click properties then select use this device (enable) also you might check the speakers plug/outlet is usually at the back of the computer you will have to open up the computer to check the lead attached to the rear of the input plug make sure the connection is good try cleaning your computer of dust using a fine air blower from a compressor making VERY sure that there is no MOISTURE in the air line specifically around the sound card and the CPU central processing unit dust causes static to build up in a computer dont forget to vote hope this helps
try this, uninstall the drivers first. take out the sound card. then reinstall the drivers without the sound card attached, once the drivers are installed, power down the computer the re-attach the sound card then start the computer back up. ive seen a few devices that are like that so maybe that will work.
Open the Device Manager and look for any Yellow Exclamation points indicating a device hasn't installed properly. If your sound card shows up as an Unknown device, run Windows Update to allow it to find the proper driver. Sometimes on re-install, Windows needs to update several times, installing Critical updates before looking for drivers. If this doesn't work, click on the link below and install the program. It will identify all of your devices. When you find the soundcard, go to the manufacturers website to locate and install the driver. Right click My Computer Click Manage Click Device Manager Make a note of any devices that appear with a warning symbol and look them up on google. All drivers must be installed after a re-install of Windows for the computer to work correctly.
I'm not sure whether this is the exact same problem, as I was having, but mine just randomly quit while I was listening to music this morning. I got messages saying "No audio device installed", but when I went to device manager, all my audio devices said they were working properly. If this is the case with you, simply restart your computer. It may take a couple restarts, but this should work. My sound was back even before it finished shutting down.

It sounds like a software problem. Though you did the right thing by entering the bios & disabling the onboard sound. That should have been enough. Did you uninstall the old intergrated sound drivers before adding the 24bit card? Just about all the drivers & upgrades for your 4600 through Dell is Creative software & thats why your having a tough time. I would put everything back to how it was. Re-enable the intergrated sound & reboot! Run system restore & check that every thing is running right!! If you must, install a upgrade for your intergrated sound. Just so you can uninstall it after a reboot. Re disable the sound in the bios. Do not install your new card yet. While back in windows device manager you should be missing a PCI device. Shut down install the new sound card. Hopefully windows will want the drivers & all runs fine. If still no it could be a bad card (i know what your thinking but it's possible). The only thing left is the regestry is using the wrong PCI device.
Go to Device Manager and check if you see a Red X next to the Sound Device.
Reinstall the Sound drivers & so the device.
The drivers seem to have corrupted in the process of mother board CD installation and other things that you installed.
