Keyboard Backlight Until a few days ago, my keyboard backlight worked well. Then it suddenly refused to light-up. Please can you tell me how to switch this light back on again? SMSing is becoming a pain!

Turn on or off the backlight. If your notebook computer has a backlit keyboard, press the F5 key on the keyboard to turn the light on or off. It might be necessary to press the fn (function) key at the same time. If the backlight icon is not on the F5 key, look for the backlit keyboard key on the row of function keys

Does the keyboard work? If so then the backlight may be malfunctioning and have a bad connection or need to be replaced all together.

To turn on the backlight on the keyboard follow the steps below. The keyboard backlight LED can be accessed through either the Quickset Utility or Windows Mobility Center depending on the installed application.Once this is open click on the Keyboard Backlighting section. Make sure the keyboard light is turned on.

Set the brightness of the backlighting

1. In the device options, click Screen/Keyboard.

2. Set the Backlight Brightness field.

3. Press the Menu key.

4. Click Save.

Set how long backlighting remains on

1. In the device options, click Screen/Keyboard.

2. Set the Backlight Timeout field.

3. Press the Menu key.

4. Click Save.

Stop backlighting from dimming automatically

1. In the device options, click Screen/Keyboard.

2. Change the Automatically Dim Backlight field to Off.

3. Press the Menu key.
4. Click Save.

Everything is working fine except the operating system (firmware). A clear case of corrupted firmware. Please get the firmware reinstalled. And you will find that all your problems have vanished. The reason could be a virus or incorrect switching off or powering it on on low battery when the phone switches off on its own. Anything. But reinstalling is the answer.

it does sound like an short in the circuit somewhere could have been caused from something being spilled on it or being dropped, your lcd screen does not use the same one as your keyboard backlight, but check the settings by holding the cv button until the menu pops up if it dosent work then its probably broke hope this information was helpful:)

if replacing the keyboard did no resolve, and backlight is enabled in the bios, then palmrest replacement is next

while the T20 is on and manifesting the dim display....

1. try to slowly close the lid (but not totally closing it) and then pulling it back to its original position slowly. Tell me if the light goes back.

if by doing that action the backlight lights up, you are most likely faced with a Flex cable problem. You might need to buy this from ebay. (dim display problem in T20 series is very common these days due to wear and tear of the flex cable)

2. Also try to use a pen to turn on and off the limit switch that triggers the backlight. This is located above the keyboard below the lcd. See what happens.

For latitude systems they have this ambient light sensor. it basically adjusts the brightness of the screen depening on room lighting. try to go to bios by hitting F2 on the dell logo. go to video and try to look for ambient light sensor. however, im not sure if your computer has that feature I have a second option for you though. based on the troubleshooting you've done, it seems that the video back lighting is affected by movement. it would be a good try to reseat the LCD cable. you can use this link to guide you in fixing the computer : http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd505/sm/keyboard.htm
all you need to do is to take out the keyboard with 2 screw holding it in place. the LCD cable should then be accessible. it a thick cable that coming out of the Left hinge.
