Question about Sony Handycam CCD-TRV87 Camcorder

1 Answer

Use as a capture camera

Would like to use my Sony TRV87 as a capture camera on my computer. Camera shuts itself off every 5 minutes. Any way to disable that besides putting a tape in and letting it run?

Using AC power. Where is the Auto Power Off? There is no mention of it in the manual nor can I find a menu option for it? That really is the question.

Using the AC Adaptor. Can't find any mention of an Auto Power Off setting either in the manual or in the menus.

This is what I got from Sony: "We are really sorry, but if you leave the camcorder in the standby mode for 5 minutes while the cassette is inserted, the camcorder will automatically turn off. This is to save battery power and to prevent battery and tape wear. This is normal operation."

Ah Hah! I says to myself. " ...while the cassette is inserted..." interesting. Sure enough, take out the cassette, no camera shutoff! Brilliant!

Thanks to dglenn1! I had exactly the same issue and could not find any Auto Power setting. Thanks.

Try attaching the AC adapter. Also, go into the menu settings, and make sure that the auto power off setting is turned off.

To prevent overheat camera

I don't understand. The camera should prevent itself from overheating. When the camera becomes to hot it will switch off itself. If your camera is switching off more than once, something could be wrong. But if not shooting continues of filming for a long scene in a normal environment the camera must work ok. Photo cameras are not make to capture films for more than 10 minutes. That will overheat the sensor. When shooting in full sun light we try to put the monitor on full brightness. That also will warm up the camera. And can bring it to shut down. It will also exhaust the battery quickly.

I cant find my webcam programme in the system.i cant start the webca itself.

The Sony Notebook computers are shipped either with the Arcsoft WebCam Companion or the VAIO Camera Capture Utility.
1. Click on start, in the search bar type, Webcam Companion or VAIO Camera Capture Utility to find what is shipped.
2. If both are missing, then check if the drivers are installed for teh camera in device manager.
Press the Windows logo+R keys together to open Run Window.
3. In the Run Window, type "devmgmt.msc" without quotes and press the enter key.
4. In the device manager window, check if Imaging Devices is listed and has the Sony Visual Communication Camera driver installed.
5. If that is missing then, install the respictive software i.e; Webcam Comapnion or the Visual communination driver and camera capture utility.
You can install the drivers from the Sony support home page.

I could have provided the link if there would have been the exact model # of the notebook provided by you.

However, if the software is installed, then follow the steps to use the cam with VAIO Camera Capture Utility from the below link.

To use the cam with WebCam Companion Software follow the steps from the below provided link:

Sony analogue Hi8 Handycam as a security camera

Hi!

You need to have things with you before you can proceed to use it as a security camera. As your's is a analog camera we will require a video capture card connected with your pc/laptop.

After you have one connect that with your pc and pTo get the video into your computer, you need a analogue to digital video capture card....otherwise, connect the camcorder to a CD or DVD player/recorder, and use the CD/DVD as a source for your video editing... Otherwise, you need a later model of SONY "Digital 8" digital camcorder which plays analogue tape, and with this your computer can capture the video via firewire

For details on how to record using a software and video capture card please look at this link---
Handycam as Security camera

Sony trv87

Although the battery shows it takes a charge and the camera will run in playbackmode (VTR) I found if I remove the battery and run on AC the camera turns on and now I can record with it. The battery must be the problem.

Moisture sensor on sony ccd-trv87

Moisture sensor is on the main circuit board and to replace the sensor you probably invest $100-200 for repair. It's the sensor or component surounding the sensor which gone bad. No other way around it. Good luck.
