OK this is just strange but - I have a remote for a RCA Digital to Analog box and if I hit the 'input' key a couple of times it seems to clear the number from the screen. Can't find any place to do this in the standard menu - and the original remote is long gone..... Likely as not there is a remote with a button doing strange things just like this,

Hi. This might indicate that your TV is eiter in "channel " mode or in "number" mode. Channel is rhe real channel from the transmitter, (being 2-62, S channel) while the number is the one you change by your remote. There must be a way in the menu/tuning where you choose between both.
If you can program a Comcast remote or another universal remote that has an info key, you can get rid of it. I just succeeded in programming my comcast remote thanks to Dave Taylor: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_to_program_comcast_cable_remote_control.html
Once the remote is programmed, hit the "info" button and watch your frustration disappear!

Get an original remote and follow the instructions in the booklet that came with the set. If you have lost this, you may be out of luck. Universal remotes frequently do not cut the mustard!Sanyo, being fairly user friendly, sells replacements, as do others. Look around for one. There is probably a "Display" button or something obvious you need to press to get rid of this. Losing the original remote can be a gigantic "Gotcha!"
I would venture a guess that your tuner is not at fault but most probably the logic circuits controlling it since as you posted, you can tune > get a good picture but "channel numbers in the upper right hand corner ...."
If your intention is to use the VCR and thereafter change channel using the VCR, you may use the Audio/Video input.
With an RCA 3 cable connector, connect the (Yellow) Video out, (Red/White) L/R Audio out of the VCR to the Video in &L/R Audio in of the TV. You don't need to set the TV to Ch 3 but rather select Video 1 or 2 or A/V.
Hope this be of some help/idea to you. Post back how things are or should you need further information.
Good luck and kind regards
