New fan not working but lights work

I have installed a new hood fan in my kitchen and for some reason the fan won't turn. I originally thought it was a bad fan and returned it and picked up a new one. I then installed the new one and have the same problem. Once installed, the lights work, and when you turn on the fan switch, the green light comes on and you get a humming noise from the fan motor but the fan does not turn. Any ideas as to why?

Thank You

Gary

There is less than 120v getting to the fan. Its possible that the lights will turn on etc. Take an extension cord and plug it in another plug and grab both power wires from the fan and stick them in other end of extension and I do service calls for broan & Nutone

Jean-Marc
try it out. Im sure your not getting 120v completelty.

How do you replace?

Kitchen hood replacement can be completed easily with a family member or a friend. While you may wonder why anyone would replace a kitchen hood, the answer usually is simple. Here is how to replace a kitchen hood.
Tools Needed

  • New Range/Kitchen Hood
  • Screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Friend
  • Wiring Nuts
  • Circuit Tester

Warning: Remember that you are dealing with electricity, so stay away from water and use all safety precautions issued by the manufacturer.
Step 1 - Shut off Electricity

Remember to turn off the electrical supply to the old kitchen hood. You will need to do this via the circuit breaker box. Wait for 10 to 20 minutes and then test the wires with the circuit tester to double check that no electricity is being supplied to the kitchen hood.

Step 2 - Remove Old Hood

After you know for a fact that it is not receiving an electrical current, you can begin the process of removing the older kitchen hood. You should first take off the electrical wiring cover that is located by the light fixture. Then have your family member or friend hold up the old kitchen hood while you remove any screws or bolts from it. Once that is done, you can then freely slide it off.
Step 3 - Check Wiring

Double check that you have at least 12 inches of wiring to connect your kitchen hood to the wall. It should be noted that if you have a kitchen hood without vents, proceed to step 5 next.
Step 4 - Find the Ducts

If your new kitchen hood has vents, you will need to locate the fan or vent duct. Once you have found it, you can open up the vent hole where it will belong.
Step 5 - Wires

Open up the covering for the wiring and put the covering in a safe area for easy reach.
Step 6 - Install the New Kitchen Hood

Have your friend or family member hold up the kitchen hood and mark the areas where the screws or bolts will be. Then have them put down the kitchen hood and screw in the screws half way into the holes. After that, you can slide in the kitchen hood.
Step 7 - Route Wiring

Lightly pull the wiring through the proper holes and connect both black wires from the new kitchen hood to the black wire from the wall with a wire nut. Then connect the two white wires from the hood with the white wire from the wall, again using a wire nut. Next, connect the green wire to the green ground screw. Then place the wire covering back on.
Step 8 - Tighten Screws

Finish tightening the screws in place.
Step 9 - Test

Check to make sure the fan and light work. If it is supposed to vent outside, make sure that the air is leaving the vent with no issues. If something does not work proper, repeat steps 6 and 7 until everything works well. Remember that you will be working with electrical equipment, so follow safety measures issued by the state or the city.

Hi. Last Friday we had a new Kenmore stainless steel range hood installed along with a new range. Yesterday the range hood fan and lights would not work. The fan does not come on at any speed. The lights...

Some installers plug the fan/light into an outlet in the cupboard above. Check to see if that has power. Some of the outlets are behind a panel in the cabinet above and you have to remove the screws. I have seen the plugs laying in the cabinet just like they had never been plugged in. Yours obviously was plugged in but maybe fell out. If the fan/light is hard wired than you should make sure the power is turned off at the breaker box and then check the wiring inside the box to make sure it is wire nutted together and is holding. I would also check that the breaker for the fan/light is still putting out power. These last two might be a little tricky if you have never tried them. The breakers sometimes go bad but look like they are set. If the whole hood fan is not getting power it is probably time for an electrician or the people who installed to come back.

No power to the fan or lights. Checked the

You're saying fan (singular) and lights (plural)? Does this fan and these lights work off of one switch? If so, then it's probably a bad switch. You can check this by turning off the circuit breaker. Remove the switch from the wall, and put the two wires going to that switch together. Make sure to use a wire nut, or tape to keep these wires together without touching and grounding anything. Make sure these wires are clear of anyone or anything, and then go back and turn on the circuit breaker. If the lights and fan go back on, then it's a bad switch. This is what it sounds like. So now, you can turn the cir. brkr back off - replace the switch, and then after everything is secure and the switch is in the off position - you can turn the cir. brkr back on again. Then go back into the kitchen and turn the switch on again to reaffirm that everything is back in working order. If for some reason this doesn't work, feel free to contact me again. Good Luck!  Jim

Replaced light bulbs but no light

Original bulb has a JDR designation. I ordered bulbs and received bulbs with a JDRC designation, the brand was Hikari--these bulbs were shorter than the original bulbs and will not seat properly even after removing filters and turning bulbs by the neck of the bulb (porcelain section). Since they won't seat completely in the socket there is no electrical contact and they won't work.

Range master 50000 exhaust fan stopped working

Extremely likely the fan motor.  get to it then , after removing fan blade, plug it in directly to a 110v  outlet ,just for a second to see if it works well( don;t touch it while prefoming this test, only the plug), or jumper out the switch(with electric disconnected) momentairly to see if the fan runs after turning the electric back on.

Hi shealy,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your problem is: This hood worked fine until a light bulb blew out. Put in a new light bulb, but the lights will not turn off. Is the light switch bad or is there a problem with the control panel? The fan still works fine but the lights will not turn off or adjust dim or bright.

You're on the right track. The light control switch needs replacing. You might try utilizing the Repair Directory to find a repairman. If you have the tools and ability just remember to turn off the electric first.

Fan switch not work - Viking 3048SS brand new range hood

There is the on off switch and the blower control that controls the speed of the fan. It is more than likley the blower control that would need replaced.

There could also be a wire disconnected in the hood.

Brand new Viking 3048SS hood - fan switch not working

think i would call viking back and ask for refund of inspection fee and go by the bad switch scenerio the electrician said new fan that would be considered flaws in workmanship in most states dont know where you are located but pretty much same anywhere most inspectors for these companies always try to blame problems off on installers hold your ground and make them fix it and refund that" inspection " fee I've been doing electrical work for several (20+) years it takes longer than 5 minutes to troubleshoot something like that good luck
