Question about Televison & Video

Philips Magnavox 50

Telivision is under two years old and would shut off by itself. We had it repaired under warranty and they said it was the mother board. It recently stopped working again, out of warranty of course, yet this time it will not turn back on at all. We had the same repair crew come out, who diagnosed the issue with their boss over a cell phone by placing the reciever over the front of the TV while it was trying to turn on so he could hear the noise. Pretty high tech. There diagnosis, "light engine has died" ? $ 1,813.00 to replace the part plus $ 350.00 for labor plus tax. $600.00 more than I paid for it. I find that questionable. The televison makes a noise when you turn it on simalar to a solinoid or electric motor trying to wind up to start than it shuts of after many trys with no result. The bulb appers to be good. If there is such a thing as a light engine, how does one relpace it an where can I find this product by its techincal name and item number. Thank You!

I am familiar with this model, if 8 years old do not invest any money in it as most parts are no longer available from Philips.

Saw a lot of them when only a few years old get junked.

My tv picture is light and hard to see and will periodically shut off.its only abput 5 yrs old/

For a Philips LCD TV, that's at least two years longer than they typically last. The most common problem with Philps TVs is the power supply board, which could cause the TV to shut-down by itself. The picture being too-light could happen for several reasons. In general, a repair shop needs to figure out what's wrong.

Hi my name is Roety,
I can help you with your issue ,
Most companies provide a 1 year warranty and then you are on your own. Philips, Magnavox honored their warranty. That being said the shops giving you the estimate hopefully checked inside the Tv.
Some repair shops try to do component level repairs , some just replace the whole board. $600 sounds like a whole board repair. Call a few shops and ask if they do component level repair on yout TV.
If it needs Convergence ICs or a Power capacitor the parts cost less than $50 and the shop could profit even if they only charged you $300.
With the economy being slow I'll bet someone would repair it for less.
Only go where they give a free estimate
Tell them your limit and communicate up front so they will be able to try to just fix it for your set price.

TV keeps shutting off automatically

Since your plasma is less then a year old, I would suggest to contact the manufacturers to get it fix under warranty. If the plasma keeps shutting off by itself, that is not normal and should be repair.

Picture Problems On 50 Inch Philips Plasma

You plasma still under manufacturers warranty. Most electronic devices have one year warranty.
The failure in your TV can only be corrected by repairing it.
I would suggest to call philips and ask them to find you an authorized repair center near you to get your TV fix under their warranty.

A line across the screen means a loss of vertical sweep. This could be as simple as an IC or as difficult as a deflection yoke. These are not do it yourself repairs.
