The television picture screen goes blank after a couple minutes of watching--leaving only the cable channel banner showing at the bottom. "Lamp" light comes on. Is this a television problem?

After trying tips on the web involving resetting the lamp life counter and toggling a switch inside the access panel with no results, I replaced the lamp. It now works.

Is it the tv's remote? Change the batteries
are you on a cable box? You need to use the providers channel changer. Tv is made to stay on one channel like channel 3 and the cable box runs the different channels.
If the picture shows a picture briefly upon power up then goes off after a few seconds, you have a back light fault. It could have a problem in the 24vdc circuit, failing back light inverter board, or a blown CCFL lamp.
If you get the banner, I'd say you have a working TV. You don't say if you have a VCR or DVD hooked up. If you do see if a movie will play alright. It must be the cable.
it can still be the lamp for some reason these sony tv's will exibit these symptoms when the lamps are getting weak. by the way when the lamp goes out the entire tv shuts off no video or audio, just to let you know.
All symptoms in your TV shows that you need to replace its Lamp as it has been consumed its life hours and TV requires new lamp. Lamp can be obtained from Sony Website. Price is $200, Hope this info will help you to enjoy your Sony TV in coming days.
are you watching with using time warner cable or an HDTV converter box? because if you are....on the bottom of your cable remote..on mine its the # button..above it says aspect...press that a couple of times and there are different zooms and stuff.
More then likely it has to do with the aspect ratio of what you're trying to watch. Most DVD's are in widescreen format (2.40 to 1) like you would see in a theater but an HD tv is a 16 by 9 format or 1.85 to 1. Look at the DVD case and see. Also some HD shows are in widescreen so you'll get the same thing. You're only option to fill the screen is get movies in 1.85 to 1 or use your zoom functions however these do tend to distort the picture.
unscrew the screws along the sides and top at back. gently lower screen forward and look inside--you should see the gasket--reattach it or remove it...I just removed it after staring at it for a year or more
