Wireless configuration During the last 2 months I have been experiencing problems with my wireless connection. I use BT broadband and have asked them repeatedly to restore the wireless connection. This they have done but it doesn't last. The engineer said 'the wireless zero configuration automatically stops itself when managed by windows'. Please can you tell me how to resolve this problem. It would be helpful to now what version of windows your are using. I had a similar problem which I resolved by replacing my wireless modem with another kind. At any rate if you could give more information on what BT has had you try and your machine specs I am sure someone can help you.

Christalnet,
I'm afraid I'm a technical novice. I'm using windows xp, and each time bt have offered assistance they have taken over the computer and wizzed around checking programmes, changing settings, changing channels and attempting to connect to the hub. I've been in the dark as to what exactly they have adjusted, and each time I've been connected to a different technition.

SETTING UP A BROADBAND/INTERNET CONNECTION
First you need to decide what type of broadband and Internet service you require and these are -
1. DSL that uses your existing telephone line.
2. Cable that uses a cable service and can include a cable TV service.
3. A wireless 3G network uses the mobile/cell phone network and can be separate or combine with your cell phone account. This type of Internet connection uses an USB wireless device shaped like an USB memory stick.
Note - Combined services generally offer discount pricing and may include a modem/wireless router.

If you use a wireless router with the DSL or Cable Internet service then your laptop with a wireless card can then connect to the Internet. You can also connect to a free WiFi hot spots like McDonalds, Star Bucks, the Airport etc. using the wireless card in your laptop.
If you use the wireless 3G wireless broadband service, then you can access the Internet anywhere where your ISP has 3G wireless coverage. You need to check the service coverage area where you need Internet service.
Once you decide what type of broadband your require, then you need to check with the various Internet Service providers to see if they can offer and the cost of the various plans.
Note the download limits and the associated additional costs if you exceed the monthly download limits. Once you sign up with a Internet Service provider, their documentation will include setting up instructions and/or installation CD.

Wifi on laptop

To connectyour computer to a wireless router, you click the Refresh networklist, then Choose your wireless network and then click Connectto your secured Wireless Network, it will asks for a Network Keybefore allowing you to connect into your wireless network. This NetworkKey is either the WEP, or WPA or WPA2 Encryption key that is used toconfigure the Wireless Router. The Passphrase is an alternate way tosetup the Encryption key.
When you are requested for a Network Key, you can just enter the Passphrasethat was used to configure the Encryption key in the wireless router.http://www.fixya.com/support/r5270415-network_password_network_addressFor information on securing your wireless network, configuring the wireless router and configuring the wireless card in thelaptop/computer, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

Once you sign up with a Internet Service provider, their documentation will include setting up instructions and/or installationCD.If you have a wireless router and it is connected to the DSLor cable modem and Internet then -To connect to your wireless router, the router needsits wireless settings to be configured with the SSID, encryption key etc., alsothe wireless cards and wireless adapters in all the laptops/computers needs tobe configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktopcomputers can communicate with your wireless router and access the Internet via the DSLor cable modem.Network security key
Some later model wireless routers have the Password(ie.Encryption key) and the SSID already configured in the wireless router andthis information is printed on a label on the bottom of the router.
These settings can be used to configure the wireless card and wireless adaptersin your computer/laptop.
If these settings do not suit you, then it can be changed to suit yourrequirements.
The encryption key secures your data and wireless connection from unauthorizedaccess. To configure the wireless settings in the router, connect a LAN cablefrom your computer to the wireless router, then open a Browser on your computerand enter the router's configuration IP address, then enter the admin login andpassword and then go to the wireless settings and configure the SSID andEncryption key.
The router's encryption key can be a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA or WPA2key.If you use the Passphrase method select either WEP or WPA or WPA2 togenerate the encryption key. You can enter the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key with 8 to63 ASCII characters or 64 Hex digits.
Most people use Passphrase which is easier to remember eg. I was born inJanuary 1988.
The strongest and latest security is WPA2, the weakest and oldest is WEP. To connect to your wireless router from the computer/laptop,configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wirelesssettings ie SSID, plus the WPA or WPA2 encryption key. Then computer/laptopscan communicate with your wireless router.

Hi, since having a new BT home hub, my inspiron 6400 will not connect wirelessly unless I do a 'repair' with it. Sometimes it detects broadband but wont connect wirelessly. My son changed the channel...

Most people have to just work out the configuration by them selves BT do offer a lot of support (0800 022 33 22) Their equipement is pretty good and widely used.
By the way the most least used channels are 1,6,and 11 there might be a default but these are the most complete channels which do not overlap(RE;
cnannel 1]--2.412 Centre frequency(ghz)
channel 6]--2,437
channel 11]-2.462

AVG Free dnload messed up IP protocol configuration...no internet

Having experienced the same problem, and not having the luxury of reformatting the HD, the solution presented itself quite by chance. Having uninstalled both AVG 8.0 and Vista SP1 (which can also cause the problem), there was an entry for AVG Filter still in the network connection properties. Uninstalling that entry solved the connection issue. Re-installing both SP1 and AVG 8.0 did not cause the problem to reappear (nor did the AVG Filter entry come back). If you have uninstalled SP1, you may have to uninstall then re-install your wireless adapter from Device Manager (Search for Hardware Changes) - another minor snag experienced during the battle.

Wireless connection problem

BT is right, the fault is at your end, because you can connect to the Internet with an ethernet cable.
You have lost your wireless connection with the wireless hub.
This could be low signal strength (especially if the wireless access point is in one part of the house and your laptop is in another room)
OR Your laptop wireless card has lost its wireless access configuration.
Check your laptop wireless configuration, check your signal strength, check your SSID, check your security (WEP or WAP),
Have you got MAC address filtering.
Go to control panel, click on network connections, right click on Wireless Network, Click on repair (might fix your connection problem), Else right click on Status (should give you indication of how your wireless is functioning or not functioning).
Check your TCP/IP settings is set for "Obtain an IP address automatically"
Without more information it is difficult to identify exactly what is wrong with your connection.

Wireless zero configuration is not activated

What are you using Internet Explorer? Anyway I would try using FireFox or some other browser to see if they can complete the downloads. Then if a different browser works the one you are using is faulty and needs to be reinstalled or use the other one as default. The zero configurator is to help you setup and find your wireless conections your router will also have a wireless configutator then the one that windows comes with make sure you know which one you are using.Go to network connections and internet connections, click, then right click on wireless connection, then properties and you should have a wireless tab check to see if the box that says use windows to configure my wireless conections is checked if you want windows to do it. If neither browser finishes downloads redo wireless setup. But I really think it is the browser.Hope you understand what I am trying to say.
