Thank you for suggestions. I think perhaps that I did explain the problem sufficiently. I have used the USB WD 120gb external Hard Drive and it initially installed correctly. I had reason to uninstall the content and there now seems to be something missing. I am told that it is working properly but the My Computer Icon and other detail is Missing so I am unable to use it.

CAN'T SEEM TO GET IT WORKING

  • segovia58 Jul 23, 2008

i initially bought the WD 120gb to transfer files from my desktop (windows ME) to my laptop Vistas.
it works fine when plugged into the laptop, and IT DID run fine the first couple time i plugged it into the desktop.
Now the desktop doesn't recognize the drive.
i tried several times plugging/unplugging to no avail.
i realize that the device is bus driven and not enough power delivered may be the problem...but then again....it did initially work 4 or 5 times before it was no longer recognized.
    Suggestions most welcome.
    Bob

Hi there,

I can see that I was experient the same problem with my WD external.
I keep on unplug it but it doesnt show on my computer.
So now its show on my computer by doing the plug in on external on this way
Follow this step carefully
1. Plug in the power chord to your external(don't plug in the usb yet to the computer)
2. Plug in the end on the usb to the computer
3. After 10sec plug in the other end of the usb to the external Hard Drive.
Wait there for about 5 min depent on the speed of your computer to regonise the external, than you can see a file autoplay showing loading your external drive content.
After its load you can check on my computer the drive shows there

Hope this will help

I had the exact same problem. I plugged it in over and over again, deleted the drivers, everything. I plugged it into my laptop and nothing. Then I plugged it in to another desktop and it worked there. I went back to my original desktop which it quit on and it opened! Now it works fine.

Good luck, I had this problem for months.

How do I disconnect (uninstall) a WD External Hard Drive from my computer? I am using a WD 3200AAK WD External Hard Drive and want to install a 1 TB WD External Hard Drive. I would like to use the old one...

External hard drives don't need any program installed on your computer to run. Your operating system Windows, Linux should handle it as soon as you plug the usb in your computer. The programs included in your WD external hard drive are tools to backup your data.

If you try to hook up your hard drive to a Windows prior to XP, maybe your computer will not handle it.

It is always safer to safely remove your drive using the green arrow icon in the lower right corner of your screen. This way, the drive is shut down properly and you minimize chances of fails when you plug it again on another computer.

Hope this helps!

My WD My Book Essential 1TB External is not showing up on 'My Computer'. It was working perfectly in the morning, then when I rebooted my machine it no longer showed up.

disconnect your WD ext HDD. and reboot your computer. then connect again. if still not showing. go to device manager (right click my computer then properties -- click device manager). expand by clickin "Disk drives" category here it will show all the hard drives installed in your computer including your WD ext HDD . if you see yellow sign on your external drive right click and remove then go to Action menu click on Scan for hardware. it should detect and install the driver again. if still the same or maybe its not on the list of Disk drives.. try to change another USB cable .. i hope this will help

Well my external hard drive( hde6-640g) no longer registers on my computer i get the message"windows does not recognise this usb device" can u help , it is a wd hard drve inside the case.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

Windows XP does not have built in SATA drivers. You will need to download the XP drivers from Western Digital's website and install before the computer will allow you to format and use your new drive. Hope this helps.

WD Elements 1TB HD freezes Windows and asks me to "insert a disk"

I suspect that your motherboard was not designed to work with this huge drive. How old is your computer? Have you checked the computer manufacturer's website for info on what size hard drives can be used with that model?
You might still be able to use it by installing software called a dynamic drive overlay; check the website of the big drive's manufacturer for software.

I need the driver for wd2500me-00,usb external hard disk

The folks over at WD said:

There are no downloadable USB, Firewire, or eSATA drivers available. WD external drives install using the resident USB and Firewire drivers that come in Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, Vista, and Mac 10.4 and 10.5. If the drivers are not installing when you connect the WD drive, or you are having driver issues, you will need to contact Microsoft or Apple for their recommendations.

I will search further if you like, just let me know.
Try the old, disconnect (the drive form the computer), reboot, reconnect, reboot once again and see if it picks up the way it was meant to.
Hope this has been of help please leave rating
thank you.

I have just bought a WD external hard drive (250GB). i plug it in via USB (2.0) and my computer will not auto install the device. i have no software with the product. help!

If you are running Windows ME, or Windows 2000, or Windows NT, or Windows XP or Windows Vista you do not need any drivers, Windows will detect any USB devices provided the USB device does not draw more power that the USB port can provide.
Your Maxtor external drive shoud have a power adapter connected to it before you insert it into the USB port.
If the Maxtor drive has not been partitioned and formated then you cannot use or see it until you do so.
Your manual should give you instructions to do so.
Basically you need to go into the Control Panel, then Administrative Tools, Then Computer Management, then Disk Management to create a partition and format the drive in NTFS file format if you are using Windows NT, XP or Vista.
