In case anybody is still using this typewriter, I want to share how I solved this issue. I did alot of troubleshooting on my brother SX-4000 Electronic Typewriter before i fixed it. I could letters and numbers to type, but they were all in the wrong place after I replaced my ribbon. Finally, I had to take out the daisy wheel, several times, and turn it gently to reposition the letters. This was after I had hit Code Reset several times. I finally repositioned the daisy wheel into the correct postion and the typewriter began typing all the letters, numbers, and other marks, when pressed.

My IBM Selectric II either does not type some letters or only partially types them. Sometimes the machine will type a letter and sometimes not. It happens no matter which ball is on the machine. What

First put in a mulyi part form, type on it if the carbon is ok you have have a ribbon problem. The ribbon may be very old or not properly installed or twisted.

When typing wrong letters and numbers type

You might have a "proportional space" printwheel but the pitch selector is on 10, 12, or 15 instead of PS. OR it is on PS but you have a normal print wheel. Try selecting different pitches. Another thing that causes that problem is sometimes the ribbon or correction tape gets caught in the printwheel.

I'm trying to type on this, but it's not typing the letters I am touching. It types a different letter than I press.

turn machine off for 15 or so seconds and turn back on. if that doesn't work, remove the daisy wheel and inspect the spokes the letters are on. look for bent or broken spokes.

WHEN YOU TYPE A LETTER LIKE J FOR EXAMPLE, IT DOESNT TYPE A J.. IT TYPES DIFFERENT LETTER .

If it always types the same wrong letter you are probably in a language mode or the pitch is in ps. If the letter changes after you turn it off and on the homing pawl spring is bad you need a tech.

My IBM Selectric II types the wrong letters. No matter which key I press a different letter will be typed. But there is consistency in that the wrong letter will repeat over and over again so its not...

Sounds like the cable might have slipped off the pulley, with the cover off, check all cables to the carriage assy. You need a tool like a spring hook to gently slide the cable back on to the pulley.

Types wrong Characters

Does it always type the same wrong letter ie a always prints u or w ? if so the print wheel drive gear is out of position. if not and it get random letters some thing may be interfering with the wheel rotation.
