Black Screen; Change Battery Message

Hello,

When I turn on my PowerShot A300 I get a black screen and a "change battery pack" message even with brand new batteries. Shortly thereafter, the camera shuts off. Any ideas are appreciated. P.S. This camera has never been dropped or abused in any way.

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. Take a picture and see if it is also black. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

The little 3 volt button battery is the clock battery for the camera. It keeps track of date and time.

CAMERA WON'T LET US TAKE A PICTURE

Make sure you are using either NiMH rechargabeles or quality name brand alkalines to get rid of the change battery message. As for the balck screen, it is likely that the shutter is jammed closed and the camera needs to be cleaned / serviced.

CAMERA MESSAGE SD790 IS

Well, I haven't used a Canon PowerShot SD790 IS Digital Camera before, but I want to suggest this: before you start thinking of putting your camera apart, try to clean the battery terminals and the battery contacts of the camera with clean white paper, then reinsert the pack. Please be very careful when doing this so that you do not break or bend the contacts or terminals; they are usually delicate material.

The LCD monitor setting was lost after changed battery pack

Take a picture with the new battery pack. Is the picture also blank? Are the menu selections still visible in the LCD? Have you tried pressing the DISP button on the back, but the screen still remains blank?

If the answer is yes to these three questions, this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

I have a Canon PowerShot S2IS that gives me a black screen and a "change batteries" message even with new batteries. Is there a way to re-set or re-boot the camera?

Try cleaning the battery compartment contacts with a cotton swab "dampened" in rubbing alcohol. Also clean the battery contacts and the charging station the same way. Thanks, Dana

Black Screen; Change Battery Message

My proposed solution is valid for a Canon PowerShot A300 (digital)

Hi there! I had the same problem with my camera and called Canon as well. They gave me the option to have the unit diagnosed (free) and serviced (base fee $80) or the option to trade it in on a newer model (my unit + up to $110 for refurbished unit).

After talking with the representative for about 15 minutes I advised him that I was going to look at the pros and cons of the units available and call them back after I had made my decision. However, right before I hung up the phone he advised me that sometimes this trick works:

Take a pencil eraser and clean the battery connections well on the outside (the little black flip up piece) and down inside. Just make sure that you clean it out well and don't leave any foreign objects in there (i.e. eraser flakes). I learned in cleaning mine that it's best to do it in a well lit area and the battery connections inside the camera push down a bit so make sure that you're gentle but you should clean the entire area in there.

As soon as I finished cleaning the connections and put my rechargeable batteries (which have been lying around for a few days without being recharged) back in the camera powered on and I have taken about 40 pictures since.

I hope this works for you as well.

Canon Powershot A540 - Change Batteries when Batteries Fully Charged

Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following link for more info:
