SB800 Won't Remote

Hi, I have used an SB800 with my D70 and now with my D200 for the last two years. I have used it as a remote doing some portrait work. It no longer fires as a remote flash even, manually setting it to the remote setting. Thanks for any help.

HI! I SHOOT WITH A D200 AND HAVE HAD MAJOR PROBLEMS THE LAST 2 WEDDINGS I SHOT RECENTLY. I USE THE SB800 FLASH AND THE PROBLEM THAT I AM HAVING IS THAT MOST OF THE TIME IT DOES NOT FIRE AND MY BATTERIES IN MY FLASH HAVE MELTED. I HAVE CONTACTED THE STORE WHERE I PURCHASED THE SB800 FROM AND THEY JUST TELL ME TO KEEP TRYING NEW BATTERIES. I HAVE CONTACTED NIKON WITH NO RESPONSE. I HAVE A WEDDING THIS WEEKEND AND NEED MAJOR HELP. THANK YOU.

D200 shutter release mode

The ML-L3 does not work with the D200.
If you have a specific question about the D200's shutter release modes, please state it in a comment to this post.

How do I get a wireless remote to work? I have read the manual but still do not understand how to use it. I am new to this camera and learn better hands on than reading a book.

Assuming you're referring to the ML-L3 remote, you need to set the camera's shooting model to one of the two remote modes. The quick-response remote mode fires the shutter when you press the button on the remote. The delayed remote mode gives you two seconds to hide the remote behind your back before firing the shutter.

To change the camera's shooting mode, press the shooting mode button (overlapping rectangles) and turn the main command dial (on the back of the camera). The quick-response remote mode is indicated by a picture of the remote. The delayed remote mode is indicated by the remote and a one-handed clock.

The remote needs to be pointed in the general direction of the receiver on the front of the camera, above the "D70" nameplate.

I just purchased a SystemPro Wireless Remote Shutter release for my Nikon D200 camera. How do I set the menu program so the camera and the remote "talk" to one another? Thanks for your help

You need to set the camera's shooting mode to one of the remote modes. Quick-response remote mode fires the shutter when you press the button on the remote. Delayed remote mode gives you two seconds to hide the remote behind your back before firing the shutter.

To choose a shooting mode, press the mode dial lock release and turn the mode dial to the desired setting.

Nikon SB 800 fires but pictures reamain dark

I have 2 SB-800s. When batteries leaked in one Nikon took forever to fix it, so they eventually sent me a refurb. Then they sent my original back. Which was great, until recently it developed this problem.

Another possibly related side effect is the modeling flash does not burst -- it only fires a single (very bright) flash.

The capacitor argument sounds likely. Coincidentally I also had a problem where the flash would fire sporadically -- but that was due to scuz buildup on the contacts.

Sorry I don't have a real solution for you.

No iTTL mode (or TTL mode) in SB 800 synced with cord to D300

Bingo! That's an X-sync cable, only for firing the flash, syncing it withe shutter - carries out no auto features or communication with the camera.
Don't waste your money on another cable the same. There is no TTL light measuring features with an X-sync cable.
You can, however, get the proper 'off-the-camera' TTL syncing cable either from Nikon or a 3rd party provider. This proper TTL cable can cost a fair bit, I don't know exactly but thinking from $40-$50 to $80'odd.
Shop around, buy from a store where you have the face-to-face enquiry and a return facility if 'they' get it wrong.

SB800 firing but not syncing??

I had that same problem with the SB600 and the SB 800. Solutions; get a new one. After about a year of usage the sb600 started giving me that problem. It flashes but it does not sync. It still works as a remote unit, but not mounted on the camera. The SB800 just went to a coma last weekend. No sync at all, not even as remote unit, no strobe function, just a bright flash, when triggering the test button with new fresh batteries, it flashes at max power once and takes around 7 seconds to recycle. No multiple flashes at all. I had to buy a new one.
