Is there a way to control the ipod song selection and file view through the actual ipod, rather than going through the stereo? right now I cannot control any of the ipod functions while connected through the stereo. The ipod is connected by a JVC adapter which hooks up behind the stereo, not through the auxilary input

There is a way to do it. I had mine set up so that the iPod was detected as "ext in" and was controlled from the iPod. Unfortunately, I don't remember how I did it, and I recent battery replacement has reset this, which is why I came looking for instructions. If I remember how to do it, I'll post it here.

Usually when a head unit controls an iPod through a data cable, the input funtions on said iPod are disabled. If you prefer to control it through the iPod itself, I would recommend using the 1/8 audio jack input.

How to Copy songs from your iPod to your PC in Windows XP/Vista/7 and Mac

-- Connect the iPod with your PC. Close iTunes if it opens up automatically after connecting iPod.

-- Go to Control Panel-> portable Media Devices/devices and printers-> Double click on your iPod or right click and select "Browse Files" option.

-- Navigate to the iPod_control folder/Music Folder.

-- Select all the folders over there and copy all the folders and paste it on your hard drive or directly into iTunes. If nothing is visible then go to Control Panel -> folder options -> View Tab-> Show hidden file/folder/drives.

-- The iPod music folder structure is very strange, however if you copy the folder content into iTunes you can arrange/organize the music files by selecting "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized". You can do this by in iTunes Edit menu-> Preferences -> Advanced tab-> check Keep iTunes Music Folder organized.

Copying Music using Software--

There are some software's that are available that can be used to copy the selective items from your iPod. There are a few softwares that can be used to do this, they are-

Sharepod,
Anapop CopyGear (formerly anapod copygear),
Expod,
iPod Disk.

These softwares are available for both Windows & Mac. And, can be used to copy selective or all the data from your iPod including Photos, Videos and other data.

Please feel free to post back for any more details.

I received a GPX audio player from my uncle in prison, and it came with 122 songs that i do not want. when i open the file to view my songs those 122 songs arent there. how do i delete those songs?

Possibly used a software program to load songs initially? Find the right software to use to remove it. If you're using Windows Explorer to view them, they may be encrypted like an ipod format that can't be seen as actual names.

I am trying to download just a couple of pieces of music from someone's ipod onto my computer without transferring everything from my computer onto her ipod and messing it up for her. How do I do that?

  1. Have the "View Hidden Files and Folders" option enabled. To view them go to my documents and then tools>folder options>view. Then click the "Show hidden files and folders" under the "Hidden files and folders" section. (You will not have to scroll down the list to see it)
  2. Plug the iPod into the computer that you wish to back it up on.
  3. Open up a Windows Explorer Window, from the accessories folder of the programs listing.
  4. Navigate to the "My Computer" icon.
  5. Expand the folder, and find the drive that has the name of your iPod.
  6. Expand your iPod's folder, and find the folder: "iPod Control".
  7. Expand "iPod Control" and find the folder "Music".
  8. Look for a series of folders with strange names.
  9. Select all of the files. Do this by going to: Edit>Select All>. Alternatively, you may hold the Control key and click all of the folders.
  10. Copy all of the folders, by going to Edit>Copy or by right clicking one of the selected folders and clicking copy. This will copy all of the folders.
  11. Paste the music in the desired folder by using Edit>Paste.
  12. Open each folder, and copy the MP3 files into the desired folder, or you can leave them where they are. The music will have non understandable names, like "EDCI" and "DLXE", 4 letter names are normal.
  13. Open the music up in the music player of your choice if you wish. Do this when all of the music has been extracted from the original iPod folders.
  • TIPS
  • Most music player programs can decode the names into the original names, and artists.
  • This works on both PCs and Macs, but these instructions are for PCs. Mac computers work similarly to this.
  • The copying of the music takes some time.
  • This can be used to copy friend's music.
  • Get a good MP3-Tagger-Program e.g. mp3tag (freeware) and automatically rename the files if you want to use them on your PC
  • WARNING
  • Do not try and manually rename each song.
  • Do NOT mess around with any other file(s) on the iPod
  • Do not remove any songs from the list

Itunes transfer of music

hi there,
you can use software to do this task which takes less time to get done :-
http://www.transfer-ipod-to-itunes.com/showproduct.aspx?t=a

or

Follow the steps outlined :-

1. You need to connect the iPod without iTunes doing the auto-sync.
  • Hold down the Shift and Ctrl keys while connecting the iPod to your computer.
  • Don't let go of Shift+Ctrl.
  • If iTunes doesn't open automatically open after connecting the iPod, open iTunes.
  • Don't let go of Shift+Ctrl.
  • Wait until the iPod comes up in the Source list under DEVICES (it may take a while, but don't let go of Shift+Ctrl)
iTunes may pop up asking you to choose an existing library or to create a new one. Click Create a new one so that it can just open.
Once it shows up, close iTunes.

2. Now find the songs on your iPod and copy them to a folder on your computer.

  • From the Desktop, go to My Computer and click once (or select/highlight) on the iPod, (usually drive E:, F: or G:)
  • Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  • Click View tab > scroll to Show Hidden Files and Folders and select it. Click OK.
  • Look in the iPod drive, and find a folder called iPod_Control and open it.
  • You'll see the Music folder. In it will be folders and files named F00, F01 and so on.
To see the original name of the song/file, just mouse over it.
  • If you need all the contents of the iPod on you computer, copy the whole Music folder.
  • If you only need some of the files, look through the Fxx folders until you find the files you want and copy.
  • To copy:
    • Click once on the folder or hold down the Ctrl button and click once on each of the folders you want.
    • Go to the Edit menu and select copy.
    • Minimize all windows, right click over a blank area of the desktop, select New > Folder (name it Songs).
    • Right click over the Songs folder and select Paste.
      • Depending on the number of songs, this may take a long time to complete.
All the hidden files that are on your iPod are playable on iTunes once you transfer them to your computer's iTunes.

3. Now have iTunes import that folder to your music library
  • Open iTunes (if needed) and go to File > Add Folder to Library.
  • Select the folder you want to import and click OK.

Connecting ipod to a new laptop

You can actually (or could have) transfer the songs from your
Laptop & iPod by using you iPod like a removable
Hard Disk Drive

Here is the Apple sanctioned method:

Note: While you can use the Transfer Purchase From iPod option under the File menu to copy iTunes Store purchases from the iPod to another computer you can't transfer songs from other sources from the iPod library to iTunes

So you'll need to follow the steps below to use iPod as a hard disk to transfer music files from one computer to another. This process will require the use of iTunes 7 on all computers. Any computers running iTunes 6 or earlier will need to be updated to follow these steps.

Once you have the files transferred, you'll need to authorize any iTunes Store content. If you won't be using your old computer, you'll want to deauthorize it.

Important: Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats), so you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod to move your music to a Windows PC.
Switch the iPod to manual update and enable disk use The first thing you need to do is make sure have configured your iPod to enable disk use. To do this:
  1. Open iTunes on your old computer.
  2. Connect your iPod to your old computer and wait for it to appear in iTunes.
  3. Select your iPod in the Source pane under the Devices section to display your iPod preferences in the main library window.
  4. Click the Summary tab in the main iTunes window.
  5. Click the Manually manage music button. Changing from automatic updating to manual puts a check mark by Enable disk use. A message says:
"Disabling automatic update requires manually unmounting the iPod before each disconnect."

If you need to copy from old computer:
Copy iTunes folder to iPod To copy all your music files (including the library file that holds all your playlists and other settings) to your iPod:
  1. Quit iTunes.
  2. Locate your iPod:
Mac OS X: On the desktop
    Windows: In My Computer
  3. Locate your iTunes folder:
    Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
    Windows: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
  4. Drag the iTunes folder to the iPod. This can take a while if you have a lot of songs.

OR

  • When the copy completes open iTunes.
  • Click on the iPod in the Source pane
  • Click the Eject button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window.
  • Disconnect the iPod from the computer when the "Do not disconnect" message no longer appears on the iPod screen.
Now:
Copy music to new computer To copy all your music files (including the library file that holds all your playlists and other settings) to your new computer:
  1. Locate your Music folder (Mac OS X) or your My Music folder (Windows) on your new computer:
    Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
    Windows: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
  2. Drag the iTunes folder in this location out to the desktop. 300173_10.gifFrom the My Music folder to the Desktop on your new PC
  • Locate the iPod on the new computer:
  • Mac OS X: On the desktop.
  • Windows: In My Computer.
  • Double-click on the iPod to open it.
  • Drag the iTunes folder from the iPod to the Music folder (Mac OS X) or My Music Folder (Windows) on your new computer. This can take a while if you have a lot of songs.
  • Open iTunes
There you go. All your music, playlists, and other information like play counts and ratings have all been moved from your old computer to your new one.
If that doesn't cover it fully..... wow!
