Question about Compaq Evo N610C Notebook

1 Answer

Application crash or freeze

Applications crashes unexpectedly or sometimes freezes the system of my N610c. Have checked RAM with Memtest and even installed a new fresh module. Have also tried switching to another HD. All in vain. A peculiar phenomena is that the OS (Ubuntu 7.10) never crashes by itself. The same OS and applications are perfectly stable on other PCs' (a Dell Latitude Px and several different desktops) which leads me to believe it is a hardware problem. Since I cannot figure out what to do next I am very grateful for any ideas. Anyone heard of something similar?

Thanks for the suggestion. But I have already checked that. And the
cooling seems to work alright. Besides, I have a CPU temperature
monitoring applet running and it says +45 degrees Celsius.

If the bottom part of the laptop becomes too hot... the system will freeze itself... that is due to the heat sensor that activates when it reached the temperature limit. Check the exhaust fan of the laptop if it is working... and blowing hot air out.. If not, you need to do something about that, before you fry your laptop....

Hoping a Fixya on that.... Good luck

There are usually many possible problems.
Sounds like you have low resources.
Not enough RAM
Or your processor is having problems.
Depending on your OS, and or programs you are using.
Freezing is a sign of a need to upgrade.
Your pc is likely slow.

If this is not the issue, then you should provide more info.

HP Pavilion laptop freezes daily and i force manual shutdown

It sound's like there could be a compatibility problem, maybe corrupt file's, or missing start up file's, have you tried doing a window's update, or doing a disc check on the hard drive, go to my computer right click the drive then go to propertie's, click on tool's then click check now for drive error's. if that do'es not work you may need to reformat back to the original xp os.

Freezes and crashes are generally caused by some sort of instability in the computer system.

The following is a list of specific problems that can cause instability along with what to check when troubleshooting each.
Viruses can cause instability.
Run a virus check on the computer to look for a possible virus.

Conflicts can cause instability.
Check the Windows Device Manager to see if there are any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs beside the listings for device classifications. If there are, contact Tech Support.

Buggy or damaged software applications can cause instability.
If the system is less stable when certain software programs are running, shut down those programs and see if the problem continues to occur. If the problems stop, chances are that those software programs are causing the problems.

Buggy, outdated, or conflicting drivers can cause instability.
Check manufacturer web sites for updated device drivers for the various devices installed on the computer system, such as: printer drivers, modem drivers, video drivers, sound drivers, USB device drivers, etc.
Update one driver at a time and see if the system stabilizes. If this doesn't work, it may be a hardware problem, so contact Tech Support.

AC problems can cause instability.
Check to see if the computer system is plugged into an overloaded outlet.
Make sure the computer system is plugged into a surge suppressor.

The installation of new devices can cause instability.
There are three typical symptoms that point to this problem:
The computer system fails to boot, freezes during a boot, or freezes during an operation for no apparent reason.
The system fails to recognize the newly installed device.
One or more software applications fail to function as expected after an upgrade.

Some Tips for Dealing with Freezes and Crashes
Keep track of the hardware and software that is added to a computer.
The addition of new hardware and software can often cause problems to occur.

Research the compatibility of new hardware and software with the existing computer system before purchase and installation.

The older a PC, the more likely it is to crash.

When a computer freezes or crashes, chances are that changes made after the last save and when the freeze or crash occurred will be lost.

My computer keeps freezing and crashing can you help

Try the following for a freezing or crashing computer:
1) General maintenance - open the computer case and blow out the dust with a can of compressed air (do not shake can).  Aim air at CPU fan, power supply fan.
2) Turn on computer, does the CPU fan spin?  It should
3) Turn off computer, remove memory modules and reinsert memory modules.  Take care to make sure they are lined up correctly, they can only go in one way.  Use the tabs to remove them.
4) Make a Memtest CD from www.memtest.org.  Follow the instructions there to test the RAM for bad memory chips.
5) Make a knoppix live cd from www.knoppix.org.  Follow the instructions there to boot into knoppix.  Does it crash when running knoppix?  If not it could be Windows that is the culprit.
