It is probably both the fuser and the firmware.
Power Off/On and see if the firmware issue goes away. From the control panel go to the Diagnostics Menu and select Print Event Log. It will give you a list of errors and what they pertain to, along with the page count when the event occurred.
Open the duplex pan (at the front of the printer, open the paper tray, and push the green button on the right in the tray cavity) and check for any small piece of paper that may be in the path. Verify that the hinge of the pan (where it connects to the printer chassis in the rear below the fuser assembly) is attached and not off its hinge. This can cause duplex jams. Additionally verify that the rear cover is not broken as the printer uses this to turn the paper.
Behind the rear cover is the fuser assembly. It may have a torn fixing film sleeve at one end or it may be contaminated, which can cause your image problem. It covers the ceramic heat element and sits above the lower pressure roller. One way to verify if the problem is the fuser is to print something from the control panel (like the configuration page located in the Information Menu). When the paper is under the cartridge but has not entered the fuser power off the printer. If the image mark is on the page its not the fuser because the paper hasn't gone there yet (try a new cartridge) if it is not on the page then the problem is the fuser.

The error code series of 49 refers to a firmware issue but given the paper feed problems it seems more like a fuser error.

The solution for the firmware error code is to turn the printer off for 20 mins or so. Make sure all paper fragments are removed first.

The dirty marks on the right side could be from the toner cartridge or the fusing unit. You can look at at the toner and see if there is still al ine down that side of the green drum unit or just try replacing it and see if the problem continues if so you need to look at the sides of the fuser.

To automatically duplex, you need the optional duplexing mechanism.
If you don't have this, your only option is to print the odd pages first, put the papers back in the tray, then print the even pages.
When you put the pages back into the paper tray, make sure they are print side up.
Try with a 5 or 6 page document first to be sure you get the orientation right.

If you HAVE the optional duplexing unit (which sticks out the front just above the main paper tray) then post a reply here and I'll try to help you further.
99% of the people that own this unit do NOT have the optional duplexer!

Hello, This problem is commonly caused by what is known as the (DPA) duplex pendulem assembly. The function of th DPA is to switch the direction of the paper in order to print the duplex side. The DPA sometimes will bind and not work properly which results in the paper jam you have described. See Photo Below.

In order to change this part, the printer needs to be dis-assembled. AN HP Certified Technician would be best to do this repair.

Have a hp laserjet 4350 network printer and have select print on both sides check on the printer preferences and in the finisher tabs. but still doesnt not print on both sides.

This would have to be a 4350DN or DTN model to do automatic duplexing. I would make sure you have one of these 2 models. Depending on what driver was loaded the duplex option may show up, but if the printer does not have the duplex option and the associated firmware then it will not duplex automatically.
This is the only thing I have seen that would cause what you are describing.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Probably a bad FUSER. The teflon is probably worn off.

Also take out the toner and move the drum cover aside to look at the drum..It should be clean.

Paper jams only while duplexing

Back door broken, diverter gate broken?
I would look for something like this. did the tech clean the duplexers tires??

I would also try a different duplexer if possible-paper path sensor may be dirty or obstructed

Tray 3 open or Empty

While tray 3 is detachable, when I remove it from my 2430dtn the printer won't display tray 3 options in any menus, so it looks like your printer recognizes that it is there.

The micro-switches that detect "open drawer" or "no paper" in tray 3 may be malfunctioning or the electrical connector built into the top of tray 3 may need cleaning.

(or, tray 3 may be out of paper <wink>)
