HP 3940 Carriage stalled issue...

I'm getting very frustrated with my printer.

Problem 1. Printer carriage stalled. It does this every time I want to print something and I can't figure out what is wrong.

Problem 2. Printer is out of paper. I have paper in the paper tray inserted correctly but it still reads as no paper. Than when I do finally get it to print it sucks all the paper up all at once!

What is going on here?

Check if it has pieces of paper or stranger materials in the carriage, check also if it's moving freely (disconnect the power from the printer and move the cartridges by hand).
The unit that holds the cartridges is the responsible of all the printer workings (loading paper, cleaning the cartridges, etc.) if it's not moving correctly, the printer wouldn't work.
Probably your printer needs a technician to clean and service it.

Try this fix: Using a soft cloth moistened with water, clean the thin plastic strip you'll see along the path of the ink carriage. Be gentle and wipe gently. Move the carriage over and clean the part you uncovered, There may be residual ink that will cover some of the fine lines on the strip that the printer uses to move the carriage. You should use latex gloves as that ink can get on your hands and it doesn't wash off easily.

Carriage Jam Error on HP Printer

There is nothing much to do if you get a Carriage Jam error. We can give a try to solve it ( Usually carriage jam error results in Hardware failure )

Follow the instructions below to resolve Carriage Jam issue.
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Open the rear access door ( or duplexer )
  3. Check for any bits of paper stuck, if so, remove them.
  4. Open the front access door where you see the cartridges. Check for any paper pieces, if so, remove them.
  5. Move the carriage manually 5-6 times from left to right. The carriage should move freely. ( Do not apply force )
  6. If the Carriage does not move freely, try to remove the cartridges and close the rear and front access door.
  7. Power on the printer and it will prompt you for missing cartridges.
  8. Install the Cartridges. If it does not prompt you for cartridges missing, you will find Carriage Jam Error on the screen
  9. This indicates the printer is faulty and needs repair

In any condition if you are not able to fix the issue, Contact HP ( 1-800-474-6836 ) If the printer is In-Warranty please contact HP for replacement. HP may charge for repair for Out of Warranty printer

Regards,Ron

The power light is flashing and the printer makes a grinding noise and won't print. There was a paper jam that i had to pull out prior to this issue.

Hello According to HP, follow these steps for resolving the issue
Remove the rear access door, or the automatic two-sided printing accessory, and check for any paper jams or paper obstructions. Remove any obstructions. Check to make certain the carriage is on the right side of the printer. Rotate the rear paper guide rollers upwards five times, then downwards four times. If the rollers will not move, open the top cover and slide the carriage to the right (if it is not already there and if carriage can move). Try to roll the rollers again while pushing the clutch in. If the rollers do not move, continue on to the next step. Figure Location of the clutch c00040832.gif Replace the rear access door accessory, or the automatic two-sided printing accessory. Close the top cover. Plug the power cable back in. Turn the printer on, and replace the cartridges if possible. If the carriage moves, but there is still a grinding noise, there may be a paper feed issue. If the carriage will not move, then it is a carriage stall issue. After installing the cartridge, if the printer has a solid power light, perform a self-test on the printer. Hope this helps, if so do rate the solution

I replaced my color cartridge on my HP Photosmart C3100 series printer and now it is making a grinding sound, but prints perfectly fine - what is the problem?

You would want to try and reinstall the print cartridges. It is possible that something is just stuck that is why you are hearing the grinding sound.
Let me know.

My HP Deskjet 3920 shows error "The carriage is stalled." Now how can I print ? Please solve problem

Any more info?
Has it been printing ok until now? Has it not been used for a while?
Try turning off printer, then re-boot computer.
If still a problem, open the top of printer and put ONE drop of fine oil (sewing machine pref) on the two metal rods the carriage slides on, then turn on and off printer after closing lid, carriage should move.
Try printing again

Stalled printer cartridges

Sounds like an issue with the print carriage. When it's out of alignment and tries to print, it can make awful noises. HP.com has a web page that describes a number of troubleshooting steps when you have print carriage issues:

Carriage Jam Errors

There's also a related web page having to do with the noise coming from the printer:

Noisy Print Carriage

Hope this helps. Good luck.
