Question about Nikon Coolpix 5700 Digital Camera

My camera will not take a picture unless lock button is held

My 4 year old Nikon Coolpix 5700 that has been very very well taken care of has 2 oddities that are driving me insane.

1) I can't take a picture unless a) I hold the "lock" button on the side of the camera OR b) if I have the menu being displayed onscreen at the time I am shooting

2) The round dial button that navigates menus or moves the picture up and down when viewing it in zoom on lcd sreen.... will not work when pressing it in the "up" direction. Left, right, down, all work but not up. I have to press the down button all the way thru all menus to cycale back around from the beginning if I miss a menu choice

Please someone have this answer!!!???

Oh yeah... I forgot to mention... I did already reload the firmware. Thanks to ctf1800 for the thought at least.

My coolpix 5700 has the same problem as shaddshadd's with the lock button. I too can take a picture when the menu screen is up or if I'm holding down the lock button. Solutions?

same problem, same solution, camera works; but dial when operated displays iso, then camera will not work until lock button is pressed (which also sets iso)

I can use the buttons to navigate left and down in the menue, but if I want to use them to choose a self timer, it just does not work, nothing happens. I have reseted my camera several times now, still if I push the self timer or the macro mode button when I want to take a picture nothing happens.

Had this problem two weeks ago. On the road to recovery, changing the purpose of the function button seems to have helped me - <Menu>, <Set-up1>, <Controls>, <Func.> Change chosen option away from the top one (User Setting). I found the third one down with the flash symbol least confusing. Then <Set> and <Menu> button to escape from the menus.

Having done all this the camera will take pictures again without pressing the lock button. However, I'm not convinced the func. button works as described in the manual. Hope this helps?

No solution here. If you want a quality Nikon, you need to spend thousands for their professional DSLRs. Take care of your Canon and you should be very happy with it.

Nikon Coolpix 5700 malfunction

It sounds like the Function (FUNC) button is stuck. Actually, that's what is supposed to happen if you press the FUNC and then turn the wheel... but it's not supposed to stay that way after the FUNC button is released. Try tapping the FUNC button to see if it releases.

Blurry images on a Coolpix 5700?

This camera was in the time when the ccd had problems.

Call Nikon concerning your camera. You can send it to them, they will estimate it, and may repair it for free if it is the ccd problem.

Overexposure

CoolPix 5700's have a common image sensor failure. Check with Nikon for recalls, this may be the cause of your issue. Alternatively the shutter may be stuck open, causing too much light to reach the sensor and causing over exposure as well as lines across the image. David Millier Advance Camera Repair

LCD blank & No picture taken

This appears to be a well known CCD problem, which Nikon acknowledges only for the COOLPIX 3100, 5700 and SQ models. Nikon denies the CCD problems on the 5400 are related, even though a Google search for this problem returns numerous results which claim the same defective Sony CCD sensor was used in the 5400 as was used in the 3100, 5700, and SQ models. Nikon 5700 takes a blank picture

There was a line of defective Sony sensors that went into a lot of cameras between 2004 and 2005. As far as I know the 5700 was the primary victim in the Nikon line but Nikon is offering to repair or replace the affected cameras regardless of warranty status. http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/coolpix.html Good luck
