Question about Hitachi 43UWX10B 43" Rear Projection Television

Magic Focus does not work.

I got convergence problem and have a double images. After being failed Magic Focus, I tried to use manual adjust by interrupting the magic focus. However, when I finished the manual convergence (actually not help), I lost my magic focus function. Every time when I press the Magic Focus button, I got a grid screen, not the working Magic Focus. Does anyone know how to get the magic focus back?

    Thanks, Terryfic. I will replace ISs as you instructed. However, I am wondering how get my Magic Focus back as it used to be. I mean, when I press the button, TV will do automatic alignment for me, not showing a set of crosses on screen. Thank again.

    Yes, I understand I need to replace the IS to fix the double image. I cannot count on the automatic alignment. What I want to know is that before I replace the IS, can I get the Magic Focus back as it used to be?

    Terry,

    I replaced the both ICs with original STK392-110, instead of STK394-160E update as you suggested, because I just wanted my TV back. After replacing, the far right side of screen gives me normal picture, but the left side (about one third) still show the double images. This time the double images changed from horizontal to vertical. Some posts introduce DCAM and I tried. When I got the grid showed on screen, the red lines curve toward the center on the left of screen. I was not able to move the red line down or up when they were in editing status (flashing). I guess some resistors that work with the ICs might be dead and I did not check them out. You suggested me to check B+ feed resistors. Where are located and how do I check them? Beside, if some resistors are dead, will the new installed ISs be burnt? What should I do to fix my TV? Thanks. ---- Jerry

    Hi, Terry,



    I checked 13 RK resistors near to the ICs. Six of them are suspected to be dead, because the reading values are significantly larger and beyond the tolerance. For example, RK42 (2.2)--3.4; RK97 (1.5)--1.7; RK58 (2.9)--4.0; RK54 (1.5)--1.7; RK49 (2.1)--2.8 (the number after "--" is what I checked). The RK46 has a burnt sign and make me hard to determine its resistance. (see picture) I got more than 1000 ohm for this resistor. I believe this resistor is dead and need to be replaced. Based on my check, I think I need replace the other five. Am I correct? Do I need to order the same resistor? or can I buy them from Radio Shake? My TV model number is 43UWX10B V2E054985. Could you tell me the number of RK46? Thanks --- Jerry

    After double-checking the resistors, I was sure that three of them were dead. They are RK46, RK50, and RK42. I ordered them from Partstore.com (item#: AT031935, AT031955, and AT031975). Also, I re-ordered the ICs from www.bdent.com. After replacing these parts and following the procedure of DCAM, my TV is back, giving me clear and perfect picture. The Magic Focus is back and my TV looks like new one. Thank Terry for giving me such important information. Your web site is informative and I like it.

    Model 43UWX10B, SN V2C047779



    Similar to the other folks with double striking, my set appears to have a convergence problem on the left 1/3 of the set. Is there a manual or instruction doc you can paste for me to replace the necessary IC's?



    Also, please help with the most reliable place to order these amplifiers and possible resistors that you mention may need repairing.

    Hello, I have the red on the left side of the screen (that is if your standing in front of it) more so then on the right hand side thats like off alignment when I have used the Magic Focus it stalls on the second red focus 19 seconds and 6 bars then goes to the 3rd red focus stalls 15 and a half seconds at 25 bars, and stops the magic focus showing a black screen momentarily with a green 4 on the left hand side and goes back to the reg picture with the red misalignment.

    I searched the web and got info from several sites. Though I cannot remember the sites, I compiled the info as following (due to length limitation, I have to cut the end...):


    Manual Convergence
    for the Hitachi



    1. Receive
    an NTSC signal.



    2. Press
    Magic Focus to begin magic focus



    3. Press
    magic focus again during the magic focus process to get the “stop” screen.



    4. While
    stop screen is up, press STATUS or INFO on the remote control (R/C) to bring
    you to DCAM mode and the service grid (64 point grid).



    5. When you first get in here? I believe red is the selected color by default (it is
    flashing).



    6. To
    choose other colors to converge, use the following buttons on the R/C:



    ·
    “STATUS”
    - Green



    ·
    “0”
    - Red



    ·
    “ANT”
    – Blue






    7. Start
    from the center of the screen and work your way out on one color at a time. I
    adjusted red across the whole screen to match green. Then I switched to blue,
    and adjusted that to green as well. After you adjust blue, you

    may want to go back and adjust some red again? etc. until the convergence looks
    good.






    ·
    Use
    4, 6, 2, and 5 on the R/C to move the cursor position (dotted lines).



    ·
    Use
    thumb stick to move the convergence point color.





    Note: There have been other posts in
    here to tape together the color filters found in the Avia DVD to help converge lines
    more easily. I have used this method, and it works well for adjusting to a
    greater detail. Basically, you put the red filter next to the green and adjust
    your red to the green line both horizontally, and then vertically. Then you do the
    same with the blue next to the green. Some people recommended you should be at
    normal viewing distance. I did mine from just a few feet back from the set.
    Maybe my eyes aren’t as good? Maybe I just felt like it worked better this way.
    There are some other posts also recommending using binoculars. I think it’s
    great that people suggest things to make the process easier, but my girlfriend
    would think I was insane if she saw me with binoculars on the couch adjusting
    the convergence. I don’t know whatever works best I guess.






    8. I did not adjust the green at all. I use the
    green as the guide and did not adjust the location of any green point. This is
    highly suggested unless you have geometry problems.

    Should I consider replacing the transistors next? Or would manually adjusting the convergence be a possibility?

    I believe I  have the same image problem with my Hitachi 43uwx10b. The magic focus goes through its entire cycle and the screen is still double focus. The colors do not align properly. 


    From the previous threads it looks like we should try replacing some of the ICs. My question is how do you actually replace them on the control board. Due they have to be soldered in or can they simply be removed from the control board?

Convergence issues usually resolved by changing convergence output amplifier IC's.....Original STK392-110 should be replaced
with upgrade Stk394-160E Hitachi part # CZ 01341,change both
for reliability.....check B+ feed resistors for over-heating....T.

    Beware...CHEAP generic IC's do not work long = minutes,hours,

    or maybe some days !! OEM ONLY QUALITY FIRST run IC's

    last three to five YEARS !! NAP, PANASONIC , or HITACHI is

    what the pros in our business use....no-name generics are

    seconds or thirds in "quality" and are a total waste of time...



    Resistors are physically close to IC's....location # RP-XX or

    RK-XX....1 to 2 ohms...1 to 2 watt.......

    if you find a suspect resistor,give me the location.....and please

    verify the Model # off the back of your set.........T.

Double image and 3d color


Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

Hitachi 42 in tv approx. 5 yr old. from center to left of tv is out of focus. have tried the magic focus, does not help . there is a green image next to the original image.


Convergence output ICs starting to fail and may also have a resistor or two that changed value. Would be best to hire expierienced tech as there are many necessary adjustments after changing parts.

Words are doubled red borders???


Just to clarify, it sounds like what you are saying is that the image appears to duplicate in either red or blue along the edges of the image (especially white lettering and probably increasing along the boarder of the TV). This is resolved by converging your TV. Convergence will drift normally on large screen projection TV's over time or through moving them. The Hitachi 57f500a has a feature called "Magic Focus" (pg 36 in your manual) which will auto converge the image. If the auto converge feature doesn't work, on page 37 in your manual, it explains how to converge manually. If you do not have the manual, I have the image of the pages below. If for some reason this doesn't work, please provide additional info and detailed prior to rating the help.

Hi, magic focus button is behind a small door on the front of the set just below the screen, I don`t think it is going to help I believe your convergence IC`s have failed,try pushing it once and let it finish, if still 3d image you need to call a tv tech, good luck, video-tek

Ok, I would suggest before you buy anything from anybody is to try to do a manual convergence.

1) Receive an NTSC signal.

a) ?STATUS? - Green
b) ?0? - Red
c) ?ANT? - Blue
7) Start from the center of the screen and work your way out on one color at a time. I adjusted red across the

may want to go back and adjust some red again? etc. until the convergence looks good.

also another mode (3x3) which gives you even less points. Basically, if the set looks good, you only fine tune it in
(13x9) mode (64 point). If you have serious problems, the grids work as:
3x3 - ?coarse?
7x5 - ?medium?
13x9 - ?fine?
10) To get to each of these patterns use the following on the R/C: (only if you need to)
1. (3x3) Press ?STATUS? 5 times (only works when DCU is in uncorrected state)
2. (7x5) Press ?0? 5 times
3. (13x9) Press ?ANT? 5 times
11) If you adjust the 3x3, then you should go to the 7x5, and then the 13x9. You get the point? depending on where
you start, work your way up, and always finish on the 13x9
12) When finishing up the 13x9 mode, to get additional ?grids? on the edges of the screen, press the PIP CH button
on the remote control while in the digital convergence adjustment mode (DCAM). Fine tune the edge convergence
as necessary. To exit, press PIP CH again.
13) When convergence is acceptable, press PIP MODE to write data to ROM memory. ROM WRITE? is displayed
to alarm system that ROM will be overwritten with new data. Press the PIP MODE button again to write
displayed data to ROM.
14) DATA WRITE TO ROM will take approximately 4 seconds and no picture will be displayed.
15) Green dots will be displayed when operation is completed.
WARNING: YOU MUST DO THE FOLLOWING STEPS TO COMPLETE MAGIC FOCUS
INITIALIZATION!!! THERE HAVE BEEN MANY POSTS THAT PEOPLE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS
WITHOUT DOING THIS STEP BECAUSE THEY LOOSE MAGIC FOCUS!
16) Press MUTE to return to convergence pattern, then confirm again convergence is acceptable.
17) Press PIP MODE and then PIP CH to initialize Magic Focus. The initialize operation starts and several
windows appear during this operation. It takes about 30 seconds or less.
18) When green dots appear, initialize operation is finished.
19) Turn power OFF.
21) Wait a few seconds. Turn the TV on, and you should have your normal signal. Press Magic Focus button just
to make sure the magic focus still works (and that you did the last few steps properly)

Focus won't help if it is a double image. Sounds like convergence amps need to be replaced. Very typical on these.
