Battery indicator had turned red. I plugged my E280 into my car charger and just a about a minute later the message "Battery too low System Shutdown"

Plugging the unit in to the wall charger had no effect. I was finally able to get the unit to shut down by holding the power button for approximately 20-30 seconds.

Have you tried recharging the battery? If it is not showing when you connect it to your computer, try holding down the Menu/On-Off button for 15 - 30 seconds and see if it goes on.
If you need a new battery this is a good place to get one:

You could have fried it if it overheated. If you have a friend with this same mp3 player, try to swap batteries and see if the battery is the problem or if it is the mp3 player itself.

My sansa E280 will not turn on

I have more advice on my Tips & Tricks for fixing Sansa players, but here is a likely candidate:
Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from Sandisk's website (make sure the Sansa is not plugged into the computer yet). Once the Recovery Tool is downloaded, connect the Sansa to the computer while holding in the REC button and continue to hold it even after th player is plugged in. It should go into Recovery Mode in 10-15 seconds or so.

Sansa e280

getting warm is normal I've never seen one get HOT, you can pull out the battery from these players very easey by removing 4 screws from the back of the player take it out for a minute and this should reset the player, if not you may need a new battery these are on Amazon for short money.

E280 not charging

You might have to get a new charger--But be careful. If the charger isn't made especially for the Sansa e280 there's the possibility of it messing up the mp3 player itself.

It could also be your computer's USB port. Try using a friend's computer or a different USB port perhaps and see if it works then.

You can reset the player by holding the power button for 20 seconds.
