My Dell MFP 1815dn has a paper Jam 2. I removed the toner cartridge and pulled the paper out, before I realized that I needed to open the back. I believe I thought I got the paper out, but the printer is...

After a paper jam occurs in the rear cover of a Dell Laser Multi-Function Printer 1815N, the printer will not resume when the jammed paper is removed. This is the normal behavior of the printer as there is no sensor on the rear cover of this printer.

To open the back cover and remove any stuck paper, perform the following steps:
  1. Open and close the front cover.
The jammed paper may automatically exit the printer. If the paper does not exit, go to the next step.
  2. Gently pull the paper out of the output tray.
  3. If you cannot see the paper in the output tray or the paper does not move when pulled, open the rear cover.
  4. Skip to step 9. If you do not see the paper, go to the next step.If you see the jammed paper, push the two blue pressure levers up and remove the paper.
  5. Release the blue strap, the rear cover stopper, and fully open the rear cover.
  6. Unfold the duplex guide fully.
  7. While pushing the fuser lever to the right, open the fuser door. NOTICE: Make sure to unfold the duplex guide before opening the fuser door, or the fuser door may be damaged.
  8. Pull the jammed paper out.
  9. Return the levers, fuser door, rear cover stopper, and duplex guide to their original position.
  10. Close the rear cover.
  11. Open and close the front cover.
    Printing automatically resumes.

HP Laserjet Error Codes 0 - 19 Message on printer Display Panel What it means. What to do. 13.XX PAPER JAM [LOCATION] Media is jammed at the specified location (and possibly at other locations). If the message persists after all jams have been cleared, a sensor or sensor lever might be stuck or broken. For all jam messages, do the following: 1. Remove jammed print media from the specified location. Check the entire paper path for other pieces of media in the path. 2. Open and close the top cover to clear the message. 3. Check sensors and flags in the paper path for proper operation. 3.0 PAPER JAM [LOCATION] A non-specific paper jam occurred. 1. Remove jammed media from the specified location. 2. Verify the paper tray is fully closed. 3. Inspect and/or replace the feed and separation rollers. 4. Ensure there is no obstruction in the path, such as a torn piece of paper. 5. Open and close the top cover to clear the message. 6. Check sensors and flags for proper operation. 13.1 PAPER JAM OPEN INPUT TRAYS Paper-delay jam at paperfeed area. 1. Ensure that paper trays are loaded and adjusted properly so media can feed from the tray. It might be necessary to reduce the stack height of media in the tray. 2. Check the input area for obstructions such as media in the path. Also check to see if the registration assembly damaged or unseated. 3. Replace any defective sensors or flags. 4. Verify the media meets the specifications. 5. Check the pickup feed and separation rollers for unusual wear. Replace as needed. 6. Rotate the media in the input tray by 180° and/or turn it over On NX engines this is most likely the fuser flag or the ACPM. The ACPM has a photosensor hard-wired to the back of it. 13.10 PAPER JAM CHECK DUPLEXER Jam at duplexer. 1. Check the duplexer and the rear area of the printer for obstructions or damage. 2. Check the duplexer for proper operation. Replace the duplexer if a sensor is defective. On a 5si, 8000, or 8100 series laserjet a Duplex Jam can be caused by a tray 2 and 3 feed assembly failure. 13.14 For Laserjet 5si. This error is caused by a defective paper control PCA Replace paper control PCA. 13.2 PAPER JAM OPEN INPUT TRAYS Paper-stopped jam at paper-feed area. 1. Check the input area for obstructions such as paper in the path. Also check to see if the registration assembly is damaged or if the transfer roller is out of place. 2. Also, replace separation pad. 5. Verify that the fuser is properly installed. On NX engines this is an input jam. 13.20 PAPER JAM CHECK REAR DOOR Media stopped in the paper path during power on or when the top door was closed. 1. Remove all media in the paper path, and then open and close the top cover. 2. If the message persists after all media is removed: Check if media is jammed in the prefeed area. Replace any defective sensors or flags 13.21 DOOR OPEN JAM The top cover was open while printing. 1. Clear the jam and close the top door. 2. If the message persists, check the top door switch for proper operation. 13.5 PAPER JAM CHECK REAR DOOR Paper-delay jam at fuser. 1. Check the transfer roller and small media belt to ensure they are operating and can feed print media. 2. Check the paper path for obstructions at the transfer roller, toner cartridge, paper feed assembly, and fuser. 3. Replace any defective sensors or flags. 4. Turn the media stack over and/ or rotate it by 180° in the input tray. If still persists - replace fuser, then DC controller. 13.6 PAPER JAM CHECK REAR DOOR Paper-stopped jam at fuser. 1. Check the paper path for obstructions at the fuser and output/delivery area. 3. Replace any defective sensors or flags. 13.99 PAPER JAM [LOCATION] A non-specific paper jam occurred. 1. Remove jammed media from the specified location. 2. Verify the paper tray is fully closed. 3. Inspect and/or replace the feed and separation rollers. 4. Hi, Hope you can help, A CP 6015 jams on dupex 2nd side on entrance to fuser,it looks like something to do with pressure roller release mechanisum as when released an actuator moves across fuser entrance,...

The document I was thinking of referred to fuser wrap jams. I did some quick checking of duplex jams though and this might give you some guidance to check for.

These errors refer to jams when repicking to print side 2.

Cause Solution The spring of the duplexing media-repickup-sensor lever is unhooked Check the spring and place it in the correct position. The duplexing media-repickup-sensor lever is damaged Replace the duplexing feed unit. Poor contact of the duplexing media-repickup-sensor connector Reconnect the connectors of the duplexing media-repickup sensor (J1945), intermediate (J1909, J1950) and the DC controller PCA (J4105). The duplexing media-repickup sensor is defective Check the duplexing media-repickup sensor by the sensor monitor mode. If the sensor is defective, replace the duplexing feed unit. Poor contact of the duplexing repickup-motor connector Reconnect the connectors of the duplexing repickup motor (J1771), intermediate (J1908, J1939, J1941) and the duplexing driver PCA (J4104). The duplexing repickup motor is defective Replace the duplexing feed unit.

13 Paper Jam - but there is no paper inside!

I have a long solution (possibly) to your issue:

Error 13 Paper Jam
  • Paper jams can occur in 3 places: Entry, registration and exit.
  • If the paper isn't picking up out of the paper tray, visually inspect the pickup roller. If it looks shiny, replace it. You should also replace the separation pad as they work together. On the 4L/4P/5P/6P the pickup roller has a plastic shaft that breaks. You'll have to replace the whole pickup assembly. This requires major disassembly of the printer. Check our printer repair kits for your model printer. If you don't see it listed, email us.
  • If you have an HP 4/4+/5 with an optional 500 sheet feeder that's jamming, check the balance knob adjustment. Center it with a full **** of paper for proper operation.
  • If the paper is jamming at registration or anywhere between pickup and exit it could be a number of things. Check the paper path for torn bits of paper or label residue. On the II/III series, remove the metal registration guide plate (2 screws) and check underneath it. If the pickup rollers are moderately worn, the paper will stop just short of the registration roller. On the 4L/4P/5P/6P remove the screw holding the oblique roller assembly (Inside front of printer) and pull out and inspect the assembly and the area under it. On the HP 4/4+/5 pivot up the metal plate and check underneath it. Check the roller assembly on the left side for torn scraps of paper (a flashlight or torch is necessary).
  • Make sure paper cassettes are firmly seated, corner tabs aren't bent. Some trays have lifting springs that could pop out if tray has been dropped.
  • On HP IIP/IIP+/IIIP printers if the paper scrunches up at the toner cartridge you'll need our Inside Accordion Jam Repair Kit.
  • Check your software settings in the program you are attempting to print from. Do you have the correct paper size specified? If you have a different paper size than what is in the tray, you'll get a paper jam.
  • Exit jams are frequently caused by exit sensors. These sensors are typically mounted on the fuser assembly or adjacent to it. They are plastic arms that block and unblock an optical sensor. The arms can get stuck or knocked out of place when clearing paper jams. The optical sensors can also get dirt blocking the photo cell. Clean the sensor and check for free movement and proper installation of the sensor arms.
  • On HP II/III series exit jams are mostly caused by worn gears. The best way to troubleshoot this is to defeat the door interlock (see door interlock photo on troubleshooting page). Press down on the arm on the top right of the fuser. Initiate a test page. While holding down the arm, press one of the metal cartridge detect switches just below the door interlock. Watch the movement of the gears. You will get a 51 error because the door is open. Recycle power to get rid of error. There is an arm gear on the lower right of the fuser that can shed teeth. There is also a 14 tooth gear below the large gear on top of the fuser. You can also manually rotate the large gear and check for binding or crunching. If that happens, then replace the 14 tooth gear. On the door, there are some delivery coupler gears that mate with the fuser and drive the exit roller. Check the gears for excessive wear. Replace if necessary. If the paper gets almost all the way out and jams, replace the exit roller or the exit roller assembly. If the error occurs after fuser replacement, check and see if the connector on the left of the fuser is properly mated with the one in the printer.
  • On HP IIP/IIP+/IIIP printers if the paper has accordion folds on the bottom and jams on exit, order our Top Output Accordion Jam Repair Kit.
  • On HP 4/4+/5 printers the most common cause of exit jams is the exit assembly. Order our 4/4+/5 Exit Jam Repair Kit. Exit jams in the fuser can be caused by a broken fuser drive gear or a broken gear on the fuser. Remove the fuser and check the gear inside the printer for broken teeth. Manually turn the gears on the fuser and check for smooth operation. Check the paper exit sensor arm for proper mounting and free movement.
  • Check to make sure the rear door is closed on the printer. Open doors can cause 13 paper jam indications.
  • On the 5L/6L check the registration sensor arm below the pickup roller. Also check the exit sensor arm (bottom center of the fuser). These arms frequently get stuck or dislodged clearing paper jams. On these printers, if you are experiencing frequent paper jams, order our 5L/6L Multi-Sheet/No Feed Repair Kit

Good luck with it, I love the HP LaserJet 4 series of printers. I used to warm my coffee on the top of the fuser when I was doing large print jobs :-)

If this information helps, please give me a rating, thanks!

Paper jam

Probably one of the sensors on the fuser is not working correctly. There are two sensors on the back of the fuser that move when the paper exits the fuser. Remove the back of the printer when the printer says there is a jam and move the sensors to see if the error goes away. If so you may have to replace the fuser unless you can just replace the defective sensor.

I think maybe you are missing the door that sits inside the rear door (called outer shute assy). When you open rear door there should be another before fuser.

How old is this machine, because there is a fuser and outer shute and cover mod, that goes in to early product run of this model. Machines affected are from the Initial production up to and including Serial No.'s K6J702822 (last 9 digits of S/N), this mod is to help with paper curling at exit causing jams.
