How to Connect an External Monitor

I'm *trying* to hook up an external monitor - I see the port on the side (not the back) but when I plug in the monitor - Nothing. I know the monitor works, I was just using on my desktop. there's no where to screw the pins in. One alternative is a USB converter (I'm now using an expansion dock) but they're expensive, and I thought I could do this. I re-read some of the other solutions and am not sure how to "enable external monitor"

Any help is much appreciated!

If you go to your control panel then to display properties, not sure what windows calls it, go into properties with the monitor connected to your side port you spoke of, from there you should be able to set up the display for both ports, or alternately you can press Function F2, this will toggle thru the display settings between the built in display and the external.

How do I hook a an external monitor up to a hp dv6 1355 with a cracked screen?

Product information > Product specifications > Product specifications;

External Ports:
1 VGA (15-pin)

Manuals > Notebook Tour - Windows 7;

Left-side Components - External Monitor Port
Left/Rear side of laptop,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

You can use a CRT type of monitor (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.

(You can also use an HDTV if it has an HDMI port, and you have an HDMI cable. The HDMI port is on the Left side of the laptop, too.

{Don't buy an HDMI cable that is expensive. Just a waste of money.
Those gold plated parts are just a little bit better, than an HDMI cable that doesn't have it. $20 for an HDMI cable is PLENTY. (12 Feet) I use one's that cost less )

A) Laptop OFF, monitor (External display device) OFF.
Connect the VGA monitor to the VGA port, on the laptop.

Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.

There ARE at least 3 display options available;

1) Internal monitor ONLY
2) Internal monitor AND external display device (VGA monitor in this example)
3) External display device ONLY

Press, and hold the Fn key down, tap once on the F4 key.
(The F4 key is the Display Toggle-Over key)

Wait a few seconds.
Still no?
Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F4 key.

Laptop broken screen... plugged in Dell monitor,still doesnt work

You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8

Plug in the external monitor to the monitor port. Open display properties and set the display to use either 2 monitors (internal and external) pr just to use the external monitor. If just using the external monitor, you can usually us the FN key and one of the function keys to switch to the external monitor.

How do i connect compaq presario x1000 to external monitor

Hi Judy,

The Compaq Presario x1000 notebook offers connections for external displays at the rear below the screen hinge as show in the picture below:

steve_con_5.gif

Identifying the back from left to right: Ventilation slots, External VGA Port, S-Video Port, USB Port, USB Port, RJ-45 Network Jack, RJ-11 Telephone Jack, Parallel Printer Port, USB Port and 1394 (a.k.a. "Firewire") Port.

You can connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port (blue colored jack) very easily. Any analog VGA monitor should readily connect to it. Additionally, the x1000 can output its display to TV or other monitor that accepts "S-Video" signals. An "S-Video" cable will be needed to connect between the "S-Video" jacks on the notebook (next to the VGA Port) and one on the TV. It is important to note that not all TVs support both or either "S-Video" or VGA inputs. When ever the there is a choice of using S-Video or VGA on a TV or monitor, the VGA will provide the best looking picture, and should be used.

I hope this helps and good luck! Please rate my reply - thanks.

HOW TO USE AN EXTERNAL MONITOR

Hello,

Your note book has a serial port at either of the sides or at the back just below the screen. It is rectangular in shape.

The cable from your external monitor will fit in to this port perfectly. connect it and power your monitor and Notebook. You should get a display on your external monitor.

Cheers!

How can I reset this laptop to send it's video to a monitor. The lap top video is dead.

To hook up the monitor all you will need to do it connect it to the monitor port on the side or back of the notebook2_bing.gif it should just start displaying on your external monitor as soon as you hook it up but if it dose not you may need to restart the system. Also the port you need to connect to is the only port on the computer the monitor cable will be able to plug into so don't be worried about connecting to the wrong port on your notebook.

I hope this helped.

Thank you,
Norse
