Weird noises, not recognized by laptop

I bought this hard drive a few months ago, and it's been working, but all of a sudden, it's been acting sketchy.

i tried plugging it into my computer like i always do, but now the hard drive makes weird clicking noises, and it sounds like its struggling to work. also, under 'my computer', it isnt recognizing my hard drive anymore, it won't show up. help!

i've had mine for a couple of yrs, & suddenly one day after plugging it in, d2 started to spin in overdrive saying my ibook osx would not recognize volume as hfs, & to ignore, initiel or eject.
disk utilities shows grayed-out icons and return error (-9972).

that's it, there is no help for hard drives.
i tried lacie, that washed its hands away directing me (nicely) elsewhere to buy diskwarrior and something else

the vendor from which i bought it has not returned my message.
it's as if it's my fault for buying an external hd to complement my tiny ibook storage capabilities.

This is a common problem with hard drives. Most hard drives (whether external or internal) that produces a "weird clicking noises" indicates a mechanical problem. Often this is the head arm trying to move from its position but failing to do so. What you are hearing as "weird clicking noises" are when it slaps back to its park position or when trying to move into correct position.

Should this be the case, am afraid that the HD is a goner. The normal course of action is to replace. If the data inside are mission critical, your only course of action is to avail of those data recovery by firm specializing in such but they are rather expensive.

Trying to use "data recovery software" might prove to be futile since as earlier stated, the problem is mechanical in nature.

You can of course still give it a try.

Should you feel adventurous, would be willing to experiment and gamble, pls post back as I may have not a permanent solution but a "down & dirty" trick of making it run long enough hopefully to get some of your data back. Again, this is a "hit or miss" and should only be considered if all else fails and you really want to get your files back.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back as requested, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Hi there, I bought this product few months ago. I was working perfectly, suddenly today it began to make some noise when I connected it into my computer. Can you please explain what the problem is? Thank...

Unfortunately if the drive is making noises most likely the drive is having a mechanical problem and the drive will need to be replace. If you just did purchase the drive you might go back to the place that you purchaced it to see if you can get it replace. You may also need to contact Buffalo Technology to get an RMA.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

Newer HP Pavilion dv6000 turned off while in use and wont turn on

1.Start your computer and see if your hear your fan noise, and cannot see anything on screen then there is problem with your power supply.

2.If you cannot hear your fan noise, and do not see anything on screen, then there is problem with your motherboard

3.if you hear fan noise and can see something on screen, then it is the issue with your hard disk (very less cases)

Mostly it would be the 2nd case that you will have to get your motherboard replaced
