First, go to http://get.live.com/getlive/overview to get an MSN account.

Then, go to http://get.live.com/messenger/overview to get the software. Then, once installed, launch Windows Live Messenger.

In the Windows Live Messenger application, enter the Live ID in the 'email address' field and related password in the field provided. Click 'Sign In'.

Then, use left icon in the upper right of the app (to the left of minimize) to perform actions until you get familiar with the application.
