Question about Televison & Video
The tv is about 2 years old. It developed a black stripe across the top of the screen where the picture is gone. Below that 3 inch strip, there is another 1 inch strip that has slight distortion and sometimes upside down picture. In time, the black will creed down to that distorted section and kill that part of the screen as well. Can I fix this problem myself? Help!!! It's Superbowl Sunday!!!! Thanks alot.
The problem I was having was that the vertical deflection was
collapsing on itself from the top. I'm a tech and I am visiting web
sites who experience similar problems with the Magnavox 20 MT4405 in
hopes of saving them time and money."Starsong" has the right answer.
Replace electrolytic capacitor #2465. It is a
10 microfarad electrolytic capacitor rated at 160 volts. Although the existing capacitor appeared good,in circuit and out, the charge-discharge time was flat as compared with a new capacitor. Plus, when the capacitor is in circuit with full voltage applied, the capacitor leaks too much. The cost of the capacitor should be under $2. It should take under a half an hour to replace. Be certain to let your set rest, unplugged, for at least a half hour before attempting to replace this capacitor. There are high voltage present around the crt even after the set is turned off. The high voltages can cause serious bodily harm. I would suggest a tech discharge the anode on the crt with a high voltage probe passing through a volt meter and running to ground. You will need a soldering iron, solder ******, solder, and I like to use a little flux for good adhesion of component to board.

Change cap 2465 by the vertical output transistors. It should be 10uF@160V . Mine was so black I could hardly read it.

Your going to need help. That upside down picture sounds like a component failure internally or possibly a set-up switch on the back panel is out of place or dirty.
Check during half-time, for a dirty switch.
