    I just bought COD4 on Ps3

i had to download an update before playing the game, after doing this i played online for a few hours, then i turned the ps3 off.

When i turned the PS3 back on and put the game back in, nothing happened apart from the small loading circle in the top right hand corner :S

  • Anonymous Feb 22, 2008

I just had the same problem while playing call of duty 4. All of a sudden the screen went blank and when I tried to reset it all I would get is the PS3 Options screen and it would not load the game. I tried over and over and nothing. Tried several games and nothing. This really sucks. I don't know if its Call of duty 4 doing this but it happened when playing it. I called playstation and they said to send it in and because it out of warranty it costs $150 to have a new one sent out.

Wow, it seems like all of us ps3 owners are going through the same pain! I was TRYING to play NBALIVE08 and during the load there is like a basketball trivia thing that you answer while you wait to play the real game. It took like 5 minutes for me to realize that the game will not load. Kept asking question and questions and questions. I just turned it off with the controller, ejected the game and then put if back in. NOTHING, NADDA! What is up with that??? Now I gotta call Sony. Quick question, will they send me a new ps3 console even though I don't have any warranty???

I had the same problem with call of duty 4 so i callled sony & they arranging a replacement within a week. I got the problem as soon as i downloaded the new maps for the game but i dont know if thats just a coincedence.

  • Anonymous May 05, 2008

Just like everyone else my PS3 won't read the discs anymore. The one thing that I'm hearing is that it is happening to everyone that downloaded the maps for COD4. I 'm beginning to think it wasn't coincidence.

The Best way to fix a problem like this is to use a PS3 Repair Guide.

You can find a good one here:

i was playing gta and it crashed and when i tried to play other games on it but now ever time i put a game in it just says "an error occurred during the start operation"

  • Skot23 May 11, 2008

I have the 80 GB ps3. A couple months ago i put cod4 in and it just wouldnt work. I called Sony and they told me to restore default settings and make sure i have the latest update which it said i did and still nothing worked. So the guy took my info and a week or so later i got a box in the mail to send it back under warrenty. I dont have my receipt so i would now have to pay $150 for it to get fixed. Luckily though, it started working. Worked for probably a month but last week it just stopped. I got it to work a couple times though. Taking the game in and out 100 times and it eventually worked. What I found very strange though is that it will play all my ps2 games every time i put the discs in but it wont play any ps3 games without a fight.

I then restored default settings again, did a full restore of the hard drive and still didnt work. I have the warrenty through gamestop but of course they arent making the 80 gb right now. I have to wait a month till they re-release it with mgs4.

I'm so pissed about all of this. $500 and 7 months later its in the crapper already.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2008

Mine just died too. Hope Sony will stand behind their product. 1yr. old 60GB.

  • Skot23 May 15, 2008

After my post on May 11th. I then called gamestop customer service and explained to them what was going on with the ps3 sucking and i lost my receipt and what the idiot at the gamestop store told me i would have to do....i asked if there was any way for them to send me my receipt and he said no but they can fax the information over to sony as long as you have a service request number with sony already which i did. so they did that and i just shipped my ps3 out. Crossing fingers that it comes back like new

  • spiderandjes May 19, 2008

hi ive had the same problem with mine, ive got a 60gb version and it just froze and wouldnt play anything the other week and as i got it from a friend then i have no reciept and the warranty has ran out too. but ive noticed that there are a few online places where you can buy just the blu ray drive for about 50 quid, and ive already had it apart as there is a guide on how to do it aswell, i just wanted to know if anybody has tried this route and if it works or not.

    thanx

  • holmes1234 Jun 13, 2008

ps3 is not reading any disc... i pissed.... what can i do to fix it?

  • Anonymous Jun 13, 2008

Yes I have the same thing but it's not the games doing it it's a bad blue-ray player if you put the disk in and put your ear up to the drive you hear it making noise popping sounds they will fix it for you. Cost for fix USA $150.00. If you have a receipt and you had less then a year the fix will be free. Now if you got mad and hit its your loss.

  • Anonymous Aug 13, 2008

My PS3 is not reading any disks either. I bought Assassin's Creed and while it was initially loading it froze. I couldn't do anything but turn it off. After I did that, I got a message stating that I needed to delete what had been saved of A.C. After I did that it started to load and then gave me an error #. Since then it doesn't read anything. I just got Madden and can't play it :(((. From reading these messages it seems like my only hope is to turn this in. @#$% Sony!

  • larrytm Aug 14, 2008

Same here people... i received my new ps3 as a birthday present and after hooking everything up connecting to the internet and upgrading the software. i sat down to get to watch the Batman Begins blu-ray movie. Movie started, no problemo, ran for about 30-40 seconds, started stuttering and suddenly showed an error message. I took out the disc, checked the setting and reloaded the blu-ray. it wouldnt even me read the disc! Zero, zilch, nada!!. i even let the system cool down but the same issue remained. I'm contacting Sony to see what they'll do but I'm not real hopeful after reading all of your reports. Sony's starting to sound like Microsoft, sending out products that haven't been fully tested and forcing us to take it in the a*s just because they can!

  • jbchildress9 Dec 03, 2008

same problem as everyone else. I put in madden 08 yesterday and it started to play like normal, then once it got to the beging loading part it never stop loading so I quit the game by the controller. Then after I did that it wouldn't read any disc, i tried all my games and a DVD and all that happened was a lilttle cicrle type thing in the top right hand corner. i dont know what to do anyone got any ideas?

  • Anonymous Dec 09, 2008

my ps3 was working fine a few days ago, i tried to put assassins creed in, but nothing happened; the blue light came up next to the power light, so its recognised that there is a game inside, however it wont come up with the symbol of the game under the GAME under the game drop down menu.

i tried with other games and they all do the same, that its not coming up with the symbol but the blue light is on means that it probably isnt able to read the data on the disk. i have read a lot of these posts, and i would agree its probably the case that there is dust on the lens, how do i clean it?

  • Laide5 Dec 24, 2008

I have the same Porblem. In the middle of watching a movie (Bluray) my PS3 froze up. After ejecting the disc and cleaning it, I tried agian, but since then my PS3 wont recognize any discs. I've tried reboots, and even reformating the drive with no luck.
I'm about 1 month outside my warranty and Sony refuses to take any responsibilty for the defective PS3 and is asking I pay $150 flat fee for any repairs.
I'm very angry about the whole thing.I really never play games on the PS3, so I didnt "over use" it. I didnt drop or miss handle it either. It just stopped working, which to me says the product is defective especially since it bearly over a year old.
Alot of people seem to have the same problem and I'm suggesting we start a class action law suit! This is obviously a wide spread issue and Sony has refused to take responsibilty and repair the defective products they sold to us, instead they want us to pay them an additional $150!! As if PS3's arent expensive enough!
Class action law suit! Who's with me?

I have the same problem with all of my disks. Unfortunately this started as soon as my 1 year warranty ended and the customer service representatives do not appear to care about this situation. So, it's 149 to get it fixed and there is only a 90 day warranty with that, or open the system myself (no warranty so what does it hurt) or lastly buy a new one. The last one aint happening!! Never again!!!!!

My PS3 froze when playing GTA4 and when it was restarted it no longer read any disk inserted in the disk drive - games, dvd or music. Tried a systrem restore but made no difference.

  • napabulldog Mar 11, 2009

I have the exact same problem. This is a serious issue that Sony needs to fix. I am not in the business of paying $400+ dollars for a product that lasts 3 months past the warranty.

Please email me at [email protected] if you would like to contact Sony together with our common disc read problem.

Also, I have the xxxxG01 series PS3, I'm not sure if maybe that is the issue or not.

there are 3 reasons why i bought a ps3 backwards compatability, mgs4 and resi 5. after checkin on the sony website about backwards compatability and their website saying it was capable of ps1 and ps2 games of i go and buy a 40g ps3. *****. after my barrage of emails 2 sony they finally say i should of read the back of the box then change their website accordingly. *****. mgs4 worth the hassel. then i find out resi 5 is multi platform so of i go and pre order it, annoyed at sony and low and behold while installing it my ps3 gives up the ghost and now wont run a single ******* disk of any description. who else thinks that after spending £300 on a top end next gen console we should get something that doesnt feel like it was put together by drunken tramps?

I have the same problem as everyone else. I was playing pro evo and it froze, i turned it off, and low and behold, no discs can be run. However, unlike most of you, this is the second time, yes SECOND time this has happened to me. I took it back the first time and the sony advicer told me that it was because i hadnt switched the plug of at the mains. I found it hard to believe but when they gave me another one, i was careful, turned it of at the mains, but it has just happened to me. They ****, someone also mentioned a law suit. I will be all for that cos apparently i cant have another one now.

  • uk_phenomen Mar 19, 2009

Ithought i was the only one, haha. This problem has happened to me twice now. I got my ps3 about a year and a half ago within 6months of having it one day it stopped reading disks. i heard a rumour that if you played ps2 games on the 60gb ps3 that it would over heat the motherboard or something so i put my misfortune down to that seeing as i was killing the new dragon ball z game at the time. But just under a year of having my replacement system the same fault has happened again this time i just played ps3 titles. Im gutted because i collecton has finally got good and kz2 was about to be beaten. my warranty has obviously run out and I doubt and im going to buy a new one anytime soon.

  • asenai Apr 04, 2009

this blows! i was playing call of duty 4 and the sound started to go in and out.. finally the sound completely went away but i was still punishing people and i won the game.. but after the game was over it got stuck on the loading screen and finally just blacked out... I tried to touch the power button in the front and the system beeped 3 times and kept running with a blank black screen.. I had heard bad things about hitting the main power switch in the back so i didn't do that.. finally the system restarted on its own and wasnt able to read any game discs after that.. I tried all the games i owned fearing that my COD4 disc was damaged but they all didnt work... I then tried my blu ray dvds and they didn't load either... I called customer service and I had my receipt but the 1 year limited warranty had run out so i still would have to pay 150 for them to send me a prepaid box and MAYBE fix the problem.. I asked the guy if there was anything i could do myself and he suggested doing a full system restore... Just finished backing up my files to an external HD and restoring now to see what happens... will keep yall posted...

I have had my ps3 for about a year and of course when it **** the bed the warranty ran out, it started with not reading any disc of any kind, we ordered a new lazer for it and when installed seemed to work great! 4 days later my ps3 started reading only what it wanted to for disc's. i then decided to install the old lazer which i thought was faulty in the 1st place and infact it was working again, i then decided to restore the whole game system back to factory condition and it has worked great since, this all happened after an update i had downloaded, so please beware of any updates u have downloaded!

Hey guys I found a solution this work for me and may not work for you. The problem I was having before was any disk I put in was not playing. From DVD, CD, HD-DVD, to Blue-Ray. FYI.... I own a 60GB system.

1. Turn on the system normally.
2. Then powered off from the back switch.
3. Flip the switch back on, and waited 5 sec.
4. Hold the power button, 1 beep - 2 beep - after the 3rd beep let go. Wait 10 sec. or so the system should powered itself back off.
5. Hold the power button again, 1st beep then a double beep let go.
6. The system will ask you to connect the controller using the USB. Then you'll see a selection menu select the "REBUILD DATABASE" option, it should take 5 mins. I did not lose any of my data.

Hope it work for you...

If you have this problem it is because the laser has shifted from where it needs to be and the good news is that it is not that hard to fix all you need is a good repair guide.

You can of course send it in but the disc reading issue you should be able to fix in less than 1 hour from home.

Check out this link for a full explanation:

PS3 Not Reading Games

Hope this helps?

Ring up Sony on their helpline on 08705 99 88 77 (UK)

They will ask you what is wrong with your ps3 and some details, then they will arrange for a new ps3 to be sent to your home, and will pick up your faulty one.

PS3 is The amazing device by sony but it has some common problems like disc read error, unreadable disc etc.... Good news is that these all problems can be repaired with the help of DIY Guides, one such guide available at PS3 Repair Blog

Buy a cd player cleaning disk.It is a cd with a small section with tiny soft bristles that sweep over the eye to clean any dust or debris. They work on ps3 the same as a car cd player.Worked for me when my PS3 was only playing ps2 games but not identifying PS3 disks at all.Cheaper than sending it away for much more to have probably the same thing done.

It's got nothing to do with the firmware version, nor is it the game. It just happens sometimes, which is unfortunate. If it's happened to you more than once, you need to change where you're putting your PS3 - keep a few inches of space around the top back and sides for ventilation. Only 0.3% of PS3s do this - mine just did, when I'd piled loadsa stuff on top of it, so it's obviously something we did.

Sony are much more efficient at replacing it than Microsoft are, which is a good thing, obviously, and it's all free, of course. If you've still got the reciept you could take it back to wherever you bought it and ask them if they'll exchange it for you, it'll be a bit quicker than waiting. If not, call Sony up and tell them about it, they should have it replaced.

Happened to me too. The lens is dirty. All you have to do is take it apart - and wipe the lens with a little rubbing alcohol.
Its not that easy to take it apart, some screws are hidden - but there is a good video on you tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSYYmYXgVl0
If the link doesnt work - just enter - PS3 Clean Dirty Lens in Google Video.
I just saved you all $100 Happy Holidays

My PS3 suddenly stopped loading game disks but it was OK loading CD's, DVD's and BR Discs.  I tried backing up to a USB Flash Disk but this failed. Then I copied all game data, downloads, pictures and movies to the flash disk and did a quick format (system settings) and this fixed it.  If your machine stops loading game disks, try a CD or DVD 1st to see if it is the BR drive.
Good luck.  Ian

I had the same problem recently. I was playing Assassins Creed when the disc seemed to stop reading properly. When I tried to eject and reinstall it, the console did not recognize any disc. After many restarts, and intermittent disc reads, I called PS and I was told to reformat the hard drive, as they believed that the memory and drive had been corrupted during game-play. This can be done from the cross menu bar. Be sure to back up all you saved game data, movies, images, music, etc. The full reformat take about 2 1/2 hours to complete, and once it's done you have to re-establish all of your initial settings. I completed mine this morning and everything seems to be working properly again. I checked to make sure that all my games play as well as blue-ray movies and cd's.. and all seems well.

One solution that you may considering doing if your PS3 console is to restart your whole console. You can do this by putting your console on standby mode, then keeping your finger on the power button. After you have heard the power button 2 or 3 times, then moving your finger away from the power button.

I HOPE EVERYONE READS THIS AS IT\'S LIKELY A (FREE) SOLUTION TO YOUR WOES.

My ps3 recently conked out on me and the local game store (and the internet) told me it was a broken laser.

I told them that I couldn\'t play video games, not even ps2 games, but
that dvd\'s could still be watched (check to see if you can do this).
They still said it was a broken laser.

When I found out it would be 140 bucks to have it replaced and installed I decided to just download some demos.

HERE\'S WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING.

I went on the playstation network (psn) and downloaded a game demo, installed it, and played it. When I quit out of the demo, the laser was reading and I could play games!

When I turned off the system and tried again the next day, again it didn\'t work.

I followed the same process. Went into a downloaded game, this time quit right after the demo loaded, and sure enough, the laser was working again!

Every time I quit a game I have to follow this process, but every time it works, too.

So again:

1. download and install a psn game or game demo
2. put the disc of the game you want to play
3. load the psn game or demo as if you were going to play it
4. quit the demo as soon as you get to the start menu of it
5. go and play the game you wanted to, sucka, cause it works now!!!

I hope this works for you, and if it does, spread the word!

Hi,

This is a very common problem with the PS3 and is caused by a problem with the laser on the Bluray drive which is malfunctioning and can no longer 'see' or read the game disk properly.

The PS3 uses a dual laser system. This consists of either a dual refractor type lens or two entirely seperate lenses depending on which pickup is fitted to your particular system. One laser is for reading ordinary DVD disks and PS2 disks and the other for Bluray and PS3 games.

The symptoms you describe are quite typical of a failure of one or both of these lasers.

For more information on how to resolve the problem please have a look at this FixYa Tip on the subject.

Many thanks for using FixYa

Hi....Does it read others ok?

If so,try using a CD/DVD polisher on the YNY disk

If the disk is new you most likely have a faulty disk

Try getting a disc drive cleaner from any local Electronics retail store such as best buy, walmart . If that doesnt work you might have a broken optical lense and you will have to either take apart your console or call ps3 customer support and send your system to them.

If its a 40gb or 80gb ps3 and you try and put ps2 games in then that wont work, otherwise take the ps3 to a shop and find out the problem, if the ps3 doesnt read any type of disk there is a serious problem and you should really get it checked out

It's not reading any kind of disc, or just that specific disk? Your problem is either with the disk itself or the PS3's disc reader. If it's with the latter, you will want to contact Sony so that they can repair your disc reader. There should be a number for this in the back of your PS3's user manual.

This is most likely do to a previous freeze up while on the PS3. All you have to do is to first disconnect all of the plugs and wires. Then you put them back in and turn on the PS3. It should read your PS3 game discs.

If your ps3 doesnt play ANY games or dvds, that may mean that the eye on the ps3(the thing that reads the disks and dvds) is malfunctioning, not moving efficiently enough to procces the disk, not recognizing the encrypted code on the disks, or the optical eye could even be scratched. the disk feed could also not be feeding the disk in far enough for the eye to read it. i would definitly suggest calling customer service and/or bringing the ps3 to an A+ certified technition to "diagnose" your problem.

You might want to go somewhere that works on game systems and get the disk reading laser checked and make sure it is clean and also make sure the game disks are clean and not scratched.

Your best bet on getting this fixed is to go to Gamestop store and get a DVD cleaning disc kit. This in many cases will work to clean the lens of the laser without opening the PS3 and voiding the warranty. Follow the instructions on the kit in detail to get best results. If you have no luck there and are not comfortable opening the PS3, the playstation Clinic can help. Contact [email protected]

You either need to send it in for a new disk drive, or there may be a new update you have not gotten, keeping you from reading disks (unlikely) you should send it in.

If it is not reading games, movies, or any sort of disk at all all it does is show the "reading disk" sign on the top right hand corner it most likely means that your blue ray reader died. That happened to me, i had to contact Sony to get it repaired. Of course i before hand i would recommend you to turn off system for a while, make sure disk is clean, and retry.

If the unit is not reading any disks, then yes, return it. Laser could be damaged.

Not much I'm afraid, unless you still have contact with the mate you bought it off. They may still have their receipt/warranty card lying around which you can use to get it repaired.

It might just be coincidence that your blu-ray drive has packed up at the same time as the update. Ring up Sony and tell them this and you could get a new console for free if your in the warranty.

Ps3 console: Put disks into machine and it now does not recognize them. The blue read light stays on, but get nothing.

I had the same issue after playing Call of Duty 4. Just wouldn't read any type of disc. Spoke to Sony sent a new PS3 out the very next day. My brother in law a week later experienced the same, again Sony sent new PS3 out. I think theres a problem with it, and thats why Sony just replaces them with no questions asked to avoid bad publicity

Ps3 not reading disk

Actually Ryan, PS3 does has an OS. It's a version of Linux. Shat, does a message come up and say it wont read the disc, or a black screen? If it's the black screen, get a USB keyboard, hook it to the PS3, turn the PS3 on, and type in boot game-os or boot game.os I can't remember for sure which one it was. Let me know if that helps.

Totally Wrecked.

sorry man, i know how it feels.
your ps3's disk drive is dirty. try using a lens cleaner CD.
if that does not work, clean all of the dust using compressed air. AND since its not under warranty, go ahead and open it up. use the compressed air to blow allover the ps3's inside. How to open PS3.
If that does not work, your disk drive is bad. either find a replacement Drive online or sell it on eBay.

BTW, CoD 4 is [MEX]crosstheborder
