Ps3 not reading disk

it has just happened to me too i was playing call of duty 4 and the game froze and went off and now it wont play any disks at all, with regads to the other comments i called sony they are sending me a new one but we did tell them some of the comments on here about some one having more than 4 replacements and it is still not right, also my warrentry runs out too. i have not even had my console for a year yet. After talking to sony we are told that alot of this problem is playing call of duty 4.

i had the same problem. just fone sony tell them wats up and they will arrange 2 pick up ur faulty ps3 and replace it there and then!!

I was play NBA 2k8 and my playstion 3 froze after the game i was playin ended and i tried to cut it off with the controller but it was takin about 30 seconds and didnt reset yet so I turned it off from the back of the console. I think that is why my system dosent read disc's anymore, because in the ps3 manual it does say, do not turn off main power switch if the green light is on, or it may cause improper function, or loss of data so that is what i think the problem was because that was the first time i actually cut it off with the main power switch before turning it off with the controller, if anybody else's did that let me know.

It doesn't really matter which system you have. The problem is the Blu-ray drive itself I got error message; 80010514 which means blu-ray drive failure, I believe more specifically with the lens/eye. After trying to play GTA 4, my PS3 too died out not allowing me to boot any disk at all even after all the trouble shooting tips. i.e. system restore, deleting installed game data etc. The odd thing is that I could not even boot up game demos saved to the hard drive.No reciep,no warranty,no luck.

Is this problem not fixed yet?, i was suspecting it was an update problem, since the download of 2.41 my ps3 was glitchy, the problem for me is that i bought the ps3 on the US and now im reciding in Mexico, sony said to me that they would take the ps3 anyways only i need someone to send it in the us first, that is really expensive here in Mexico, so any ideas on international solutions...other aproach would be to downgrade de ps3 to check if thats the problem...any ideas i really apreciate the help since there are new games i want to play in the future like Fallout 3, Force Unleashed and many more and it really sucks to have a ps3 that works like a ps2 only...

If i find anything on the update or the problem ill keep you informed.

omg man i was playing mlb 08 the show and the audio just stopped and i didnt think much of it. I finished the game and when it was exiting it froze. i flipped the swtich in the back and now it will not read any of my games. it doesnt even say disc read error it just doesnt load. i have had my system for 2 and a half months and this my first problem.

I have never had any problems with my ps3 until the latest update. Now no discs will play not even dvds. I called sony and because I don't have my receipt they want to charge me 150 dollars. That will make my playstation a 650 dollar piece of ****. I'm fed up with sony. If anyone knows how to fix this on their own please let me know.

i had the same problem  what u wanna do is -go to system settings -backup utility -then go to RESTORE PS3 SYSTEM -go to full format -wait for it to format your hard disk- after that it will work

This happened to my ps3 too, I don't think it was a call of duty that did it in. Mine quit working wile i was playing grand theft auto. I called sony and because i lost my receipt it is going to cost me 149 bucks to ether fix it or to get it replaced. Does anyone know if i had my receipt would they have charged me?

I've just started having the same problem, it started whilst playing assasins creed (finale), by having a momentary disc read error then coming back on, occasionally with sound problems. All other games where fine for a while, then the same thing started to happen with FIFA. Now its very tempremental it sometimes works and sometimes doesnt, it doesnt matter if the consoles hot, cold, lay flat or stood upright. Nor does it matter if its been turned off by the controller or the console or re-set by holding the power button for 10 seconds or even being turned off and on from the mains. It basically works when it wants to for a random period of time on any game you insert. CD's and DVD's still work and as I say the games occasionally, that tells me its not the lenses, or I dont think so anyhow unless its a loose connection. I've had the console over a year with no problems on the 16 PS3 games that I own. It all started a week or so after I decided to start using it for my old PS2 games, I dont know if thats coinsidence or not.

wat happend to me was that i was playin online cod4 and the in game sound went off but u could still hear people talking on their microphones. i tryed to quit tha game but all there was a blank screen, so i foolishlly turned it off from da bak and now NO DISC WORKS if this happens to u don't turn it off from da bak !!! the ps manual says not 2

I had the same problem recently. I was playing Assassins Creed when the disc seemed to stop reading properly. When I tried to eject and reinstall it, the console did not recognize any disc. After many restarts, and intermittent disc reads, I called PS and I was told to reformat the hard drive, as they believed that the memory and drive had been corrupted during game-play. This can be done from the cross menu bar. Be sure to back up all you saved game data, movies, images, music, etc. The full reformat take about 2 1/2 hours to complete, and once it's done you have to re-establish all of your initial settings. I completed mine this morning and everything seems to be working properly again. I checked to make sure that all my games play as well as blue-ray movies and cd's.. and all seems well.

They will ask you what is wrong with your ps3 and some details, then they will arrange for a new ps3 to be sent to your home, and will pick up your faulty one.

to be honest i own a 60Gb model which i byt last august and im starting to wish i hadn't as all of sony's products are over priced and half of the internal components arent even sonys. I know this as my dad fixes TV's games consoles and pretty much any eletrical appliance for a living and hi have seen the repair manuals for even the top end bravia TV's (ie the X series) and most of the components are actually samsung, panasonic and pioneer about the only bit thats sony is the case and even that isnt made by them it just has their logo on it. and i had the same disc read error message and the following not recognising a disc but the thing is that the hardware recognises the disk ( ie you can still eject it) but its the system software and the simple reason is tat sony saved them selves 4 billion dollars by realisng the ps3 before the software was ready and they have recently done the same with gta as rockstar pointed out that the game and others created problems like the disc read error during testing and the same happened wit the 360 but microsoft fixed the fault and sony avoided the cost by saing they will release the update in september.

Add me to the mix. Was playing the new maps on COD4 system hung, and now will not read any disks, just like the rest of you. Calling Sony tomorrow, But on a side note, Gamestop sucks. This will be the last Item I buy from them as they offer no support or return. My Ps3 is less than 6 weeks old.
I'll buy my equipment from Bestbuy from now one where if I had this issue I would just take it to the service counter and get a new one.

Its not the Game "Call Of Duty 4". Its the console. i was playing Tiger Woods 2008 and the same crap happened. i have read about 50 other people that this happened to. Read other message boards and you will see that Sony will send a box and you will send you Toy away and the will get you another one

No warranty for ps3 = return the game or sell it on ebay. Looks like you need to get your ps3 lazer calibrated.

same here people... i won my new ps3 on Ebay and after hooking everything up and adding friends, making it run on my wireless network i finally sit down to get ready for some MGS4 and it wouldnt even let me load the disc!!!! the blue eject light starts flashing & i hear this clicking noise. i even let the system cool off for hours but the same issue remained. i contacted the seller who was beyond grateful and he sent me 150.00 back and sure as sh*t sony wants 149.00 to fix my 80 gig system. think i will give gamestop a call & find out if they fix consoles otherwise i'll go to this lil gamestore thats within walking distance from my job to see how much he will charge to repair my 80 gig.

ive heard it is due to the update *dont know how though* but i would try to steer awawy from the 2.1 update and if u need to update it for your game hopfully the new update should help and i dont own a ps3 yet but if it can like the psp update using a disc i would recoomend that!

only game that can be trusted is ghost recon advanvced warfighter, i've been playing that game for months and months and not a problem at all, and it's the best online shooter out there at the moment. p.s don't get fifa or call of duty 3,4,there cursed man i swear!!!!!! i know cos i had to get a replacement (recontioned) when i realised fifa or, call of dutys they messed up my ps3!

It's got nothing to do with the firmware version, nor is it the game. It just happens sometimes, which is unfortunate. If it's happened to you more than once, you need to change where you're putting your PS3 - keep a few inches of space around the top back and sides for ventilation. Only 0.3% of PS3s do this - mine just did, when I'd piled loadsa stuff on top of it, so it's obviously something we did.

Sony are much more efficient at replacing it than Microsoft are, which is a good thing, obviously, and it's all free, of course. If you've still got the reciept you could take it back to wherever you bought it and ask them if they'll exchange it for you, it'll be a bit quicker than waiting. If not, call Sony up and tell them about it, they should have it replaced.

If you dont have a warranty be mad with Sony tell them how hard you worked to get the system and you really need a replacement..Give them complains how many peoples ps3s are having the same problem and they will replace it...

ts a problem with the latest download update. sorry to say but its a job for sony as long as its still under warranty. just phone them up explain the probs your having and they will send you a new (normally reconditioned) unit out. sony's replacement service is very good.

Yeah Yeah Sony' **** ! well why not go buy an x-box see how long that thing lasts (Short Memorys) Anyways had mine from release day upgraded my drive to a 160 , And i aint got no probs WHAT A MACHINE LOVE IT, Any way the reason im looking at this stuff is because my m8s 40 gig version which i agree is not to the same standard as my release 60 gig model is not running disks trying to sort it out for him just pissed at some of the Sony bashing going down go on then get a X-Box and when that breaks you'll bash microsoft too.

alrite here is what i think is the problem...
the ps3 froze when i was playing devil may cry4..
it asked me to download a sony network thing inorder to play...

i belive downloading that network caused this not reading cd problem..
so I would say, try not to download any sony network crap..
my ps3 not working now, i called and asked me to have a receipt which i dunt have...didnt think anything like this would happen..

yeah you should just call sony and ask for a replacement.btw its not just call of duty 4.there r other games that do that too.i popped in spiderman 3 and it happened to me too

no no no man call of duty doesnt make your ps3 not read disks its your laser my broke in 1 and a half year its just that the ps3 laser only lasts 2 or 1 and half years i bought a new ps3 laser replaced it with the broken laser but first i thought the new version broke it the lasers are 70-80$ if you bought the new laser today you can fix it today and the new versions dont break ps3s

restart from the back wait and make sure flash indacator is working (flashing) thats my only soloution

For some reason this happened to me playing killzone 2 online and then it freezed, it then couldnt read the disk and the little bubble disapears. While playing playstation home I quickly press the center controller, and right there there was the ps3 disk. so try playing ps home sign in and then press the center ps3 controller and see if the disk is there, if this works then u dont need to replace and get it fixed. ( : hope iam not the only one this happend to.

freezing and not playing disks is a common problem. my system has just stopped playing any disk after 1 month. sony are replacing it but u need the recipt and it needs to b in warranty. anything bought has to be fit for the purpose you bought it for wether its in warranty or not if its a common recurring fault there must be grounds for legal action!!!!!!

hi my ps3 stopped reading disks yesterday and ive been on a few different forums to check problem and the best advice i got was to ring sony and tell them the problem so i did that and there comin to replace my system with a fully reconditioned one on the 11th feb the best news was that ive had my system for 2 years now (well past the guarentee) and they sed its a common fault so they fix it free of charge so i would tell everyone to ring sony they were very helpful with every thing

Buy a cd player cleaning disk.It is a cd with a small section with tiny soft bristles that sweep over the eye to clean any dust or debris.They work on ps3 the same as a car cd player.Worked for me when my PS3 was only playing ps2 games but not identifying PS3 disks at all.Cheaper than sending it away for much more to have probably the same thing done.

My PS3 suddenly stopped loading game disks but it was OK loading CD's, DVD's and BR Discs.  I tried backing up to a USB Flash Disk but this failed. Then I copied all game data, downloads, pictures and movies to the flash disk and did a quick format (system settings) and this fixed it.  If your machine stops loading game disks, try a CD or DVD 1st to see if it is the BR drive.

u could go get it repaired or u could go to system settings,then go to back-up utility,make sure u have something to save the data on like a usb.After u save it go to restore it will delete the andd it should work after that

so got my ps3 bout two weeks ago. played a blu ray once. played MGS4 once. went to play another blu ray. nope. no discs recognized. THIRD TIME MY SYSTEM WAS ON AND IT QUIT WORKING. i'm on my thrid 360 already and now it looks like i'll be getting a second ps3. why cant these billion dollar companies produce quality items?

Same thing happened to me.
Two weeks ago, I got guitar hero world tour for my birthday, and I was like, okay, well, i'll play this now. So I placed it into the ps3 and it said I needed an update. So I was like, okay, i'll update, whatever.
After the update, I played the game for like, 5 hours straight, and then it froze!
That has never happened to my ps3, and we got it last christmas. I read in the manual, it's a one year warranty...
I really think the latest update is the problem. This has never happened, and I'm so ripped.
I tried putting assassins creed into the ps3 after I took out gh world tour (which took 20 seconds to take out...) but the ps3 would not load that game either. >.>
So does anyone know what you can do if you don't have the receipt?

Hi everybody i had the same problem as everyone else here my ps3 stopped reading disks but i got a fix first i tried opening my ps3 and cleaned my laser it was clean but i cleaned it anyway no joy same old problem but now my warranty was VOID because i opened it then i read some of the comments by fellow members of fixya and now the is problem fixed. HOW? Easy i phoned sony told them what happened told them i had opened it he said that i shouldn't of BUT they will still fix it its the 5th on nov they're picking it up on the 13th and it should be here within 10 days free of charge plus what i forgot to mention my warranty was out of date but they said they are extending EVERYBODYS warranty to fix this problem plus when it returns it will have 3 month warrant so do as i do and phone sony

i had the same problem after playing cod 4 but when i put on a demo and quit it the ps3 reads my disks again . Maybe it could do the same for u guyz ?

I had the same prob. One bad thing is it happened 3.5 months after the warranty. First thing I did was research it and found many forums with people complaining about the same thing, I thought I would have a chance of them honoring my request to fix it being it was an obvious problem of theirs and not the consumer but they pretty much said sorry for your luck. BS if you ask me. The PS3 was hardly used being I only purchased it for nephews when they come to visit and I watch movies here and there.

Mine was the 60gb version and was $599.00 after taxes and adding the HDMI cable it was close to $670.00, If I have to pay the $150.00 to fix it this will end up costing me over $800.00.

This problem should be a recall if it is something else then I would agree to pay.

Yesterday while playing Tom Clancy's rainbow 6 vegas 2 my ps3 froze so dumbly turned it off from the f'n back. I am reformating my ps3 harddrive now because i heard some talk that it works. If it doesnt work i am going to call sony. It's a f'n waist of my time.

I had the same problem too. While I was playing COD4, the sound stopeed. All I heard were the mics from the other players online. When the game ended, my PS3 froze. I restarted my PS3, now it will not read any of my discs. F*&^ sony!

samething here. SoNy needs to explain to us much more clearly on what is happing with the units not reading any disks. Sound like their PR dont even have a clue. Blu-Ray is a wrong way to go with Video gaming and what not.

Ok i was playin GH3 and the sound just froze but i could still play the actual game i then tried fifa 08 and GTA IV and it didnt load so im goin to send my PS3 to Sony and it better come back fixed.ill tel u something DONT GET A PS3!!There **** cause it breaks easily but hopefully ill take that back if it works.

my ps3 turns off when ever it wants to. i phoned them up n they sed we will send u another one. that will be my fourth ps3 in 1 year. i want ma money back for all the stuff. if u no wt to do tell me and write down the comment to $1DHU

They want $150 to fix it if you don't have a receipt. Mine happened after I downloaded the new system update.

I have been checking sony's support section on their website and they said it usually takes 7-15 days for them to fix it..how long did any of you have your playstation worked on cause i really want it back..and 15 days is just ridiculous...i need it now lol

yes i have had this problem just after chrismas when i got. it was upsetting but it will be a bug/glitch or something.

now ive just had this problem again and its virtually infixable unless u can get a new software update with a solution.

Same problem with me. I was playing cod 4. It froze some times but it was ok after i restarted it. Then one time it froze i restrated it and it didnt work. 2day is the day im supposed 2 get it. But dam. Its been a hard 2 weeks without it. If it happens again im gonna die.

I'm on my fifth playstation 3. Sony replaced my 60 gig 4 times and I finally got tired of waiting three weeks for a turn around time so I bought a 40 gig as a back up unit. Well guess what? They are both down no and I'm waiting on Sony to send me boxes to replace them both.

I'm so f'n disgusted with Sony that I can't even see straight. I've spent over $4000 over the last year ($1000 for PS3's and $3000 on video games and Blu Ray DVD) and have been without one for 3 of the last 15 months.

Ridiculous. I would not recommend to any of my firends or family that they purchase one at this point in time.

I should say that Sony does replace the unit and their customer service is far better than what I experienced with microsoft with all the early problems with my 360.
