Not sure what you mean Drummernick, I just want the laptop to boot to my desktop...can you help?

  • Cali222 Feb 03, 2008

I get the INB thinkpad background and it wants me tp correct the date and time which I have done several times. when I complete that step it reboots automatically with the same error codes 00161 and 00163. Holding down f! at the startup does nothhing to help the problem.

  • Cali222 Feb 03, 2008

Is this something I can do by opening the the bottom of the laptop ans scot around looking for a very small battery, if yes do you know where they sell the the bios batteries?

  • Cali222 Feb 03, 2008

Thanks, you're the best. I got the bios battery out, on the bottom of the IBM's there is a door with one screw that has access to the memory and bios battery, now I just need a CR1220 battery and I'm good to go. Thansk for all your help.

Hi, my laptop also has the errors 00161 and 00163. A friend of mine said to look the numbers up and then throw my laptob off a tall building, it wasn't funny. What can I do to fix it, I've tried F1 but it didn't do anything.

    Can you help me?

I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The

LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this?

If you get the "163" error it's simple. Just take the bios battery out or replace it with a new one!

How to reset all settings to my lenovo a269i mobile thru pc

Is it a think pad ?
Power off your Thinkpad.
Press and hold the "F1" key and turn your Thinkpad on, still holding the "F1" key down.

Release the "F1" key when you hear repeating beeps. Wait for the "IBM BIOS Setup Utility" to load.

Select "Startup" using the arrow keys and press "Enter."
Select "Boot" or "Startup Sequence" and press "Enter."

Select "CD-ROM Drive."
Press the "F6" key repeatedly until "CD-ROM Drive" sits at the top of the list.

Insert your recovery CD into your Thinkpad's CD-ROM drive.
If you have multiple recovery CDs, insert the CD that has "Disc 1" on its label.

Press "F10" to save your changes and exit the BIOS Utility.
Select "Yes" and press "Enter" when the "Setup Confirmation" window appears.

Your laptop will restart. Wait for the Recovery Utility to load.

Select "Restore to Factory Specifications" to erase the contents of your hard drive and reinstall the Windows version and drivers that your Thinkpad originally came with.

Follow the Recovery Utility's onscreen instructions.
When prompted to insert another disc, do so according to the numerical labels on your recovery CDs (e.g., insert "Disc 2" after "Disc 1" and "Disc 3" after "Disc 2").

Your Thinkpad restarts when the restore process finishes. Power off your Thinkpad.

Hold down the "F1" key and power on your laptop to access the "IBM BIOS Setup Utility."

Select "Boot" or "Startup Sequence" and press "Enter."
Press "F9."

Select "Setup Defaults" from the menu and press "Enter" so that your Thinkpad no longer boots from the CD-ROM drive.

Press "F10" and select "Yes" to confirm your changes.
Your Thinkpad will restart and load your newly installed operating system.

Set the boot order to boot from cd drive first, to enter the bios ...
With the unit powered off, hold the F1 key and power the unit on. Keep F1 held down until Easy setup appears.

Error 00161 00163

[CHANGE YOUR CMOS BATTER WHICH IS INSIDE YOUR CPU CASE]
I do not think you fixed the CMOS battery - (backup battery = CMOS battery)
According to the error codes, you have a dead backup battery and the time is not set. Makes sense?
161
(Dead battery.) 1. Go to Checking the Backup Battery
2. Backup battery.
3. System board.
163
(Time and date were not set.) 1. Set time and date.
2. System board.

Go to www.ibm.com Find and download the user manual, and the "hardware maintenance manual."
Do you know how to get into bios/setup?

Start with the machine OFF. HOLD DOWN and CONTINUE TO HOLD THE "F1" key.
WHILE STILL HOLDING "F1", turn the power on, and CONTINUE TO HOLD "F1"
This will get you into the bios "setup." You should check the date, bootup order, etc, and reset.
I would check the "wire" you think you reconnected---you may just not have actually reconnected it.
The "hardware maintenance manual" shows you how to maintain this machine, and it explains the meaning of the error codes.

This will get you started on looking for the manual:

How to enter into BIOS when trackpoint was broken.

Hi there.
Its something to do with the trackpoint, possibly the cable has become loose.
* If an emergency power down is made by switching the system off during or while an application is open, then immediately switching the system on creates a 8611 error.
* Repeatedly turning power off and back on without properly shutting down or allowing the system to shut itself down.

Solution
Wait at least 6 seconds or longer after shutting down the system or before restarting to correct the 8611 error.
See if that gets rid of the error, if not it could be a loose cable to the trackpoint.

Good luck

Entering BIOS settings, Easy-Access, after POP, with external KB

The Power On Password problem is near impossible to crack. It is designed to prevent unauthorized access to the Thinkpad and removing the BIOS battery will not remove the password because the password is stored on an EEPROM chip.
There are no backdoor passwords available, the only option is to ask the person who set the password.
OR
There is a way to hack into the Thinkpad to see and remove the password but it requires electronic skills, a program and a working computer.
For details on how to do this go to :-

Are you trying to access the Bios set up? I own the IBM ThinkPad 380Z, 13" full Screen, 233MHz Pentium II model. If you power on the machine and just hold down the Q button it will then take you to easy set up. If you have Windows on it just wait to the IBM logo screen clears and press and hold F8 and that will bring you to Windows setup.

Try this:
Start with the machine OFF, hold down and CONTINUE TO HOLD the "F1" key and turn on the power WHILE STILL HOLDING DOWN "F1"
This should get you into the bios/setup, which on most thinkpads is pretty simple and self explanatory. You can reset the date, and something called "initialize" as I remember.
POST YOUR MODEL NUMBER!!!!
Ibm.com's support is famous for having very good, extensive support for thinkpads. I searched for this error no. but we really need the model number
