Do me a favor get a light source and hold it up to the screen if you can see your operating system your screen is shoot...

I am afraid you are correct, your laptop screen is not usable and unless you’re a trained professional I do not recommend trying to repair the monitor itself. In fact, to do so would be rather dangerous to your own well being, but you do not have to throw your ThinkPad away. You could continue to use it with the external monitor or you could send it into Dell and pay them for a replacement. Look around though, there are probably other people who could provide this service for less, beause large corporations usually charge you more than necessary.

if ur tv is CRT (picture tube) just power OFF it for 20-30 minutes and then power up again. problem will be solved.

Attach an external monitor to the laptop and boot the laptop.
If you get video to the screen then it is probably the inverter for the laptop screen has failed and can be replaced.
If you have no screen available, then turn the laptop on, shine a bright light into the screen from an angle and see if you can see any kind of images at all. Best to wait 2 minutes from when it is first booted to allow enough time for Windows to load.
