Question about HP EXT DVD BURN HP|DVD740E LS BK R (DVD740EBK) Burner

Hp 740e not reading blank dvd discs

I have a HP 740e external dvd burner and recently it has not recognized blank discs for burning. I thought maybe it was the brand of discs (windata dvd-r) but about a month ago I had several successful burns using discs from the same package. I have tried the firmware update from HP's website but to no avail. I am using Windows XP Pro, service pack 2 and neither Nero or DVD decrypter are working as they both state that blank media not present.

Any solutions, advice, strategies? Or is it time to toss the drive (about 2 years old)?

Don't wanna sound like a Doomsayer but I think it has burned its last burn...

Try to clean it first, if it still doesn't work, then it is time for a new one.

Had a similar experience and we found out that the drive had conked out.

i understand completely. i have the same external device. if yours is an external device, simply unplug the power that supplies the dvd rom, while your system is running. and it will detect, but once you shut down and reboot you wil again need to turn the power off and then on again on the HP DVD 740e this is not to annoying at least it works right? well it does for me in my win 7 64 bit home premium. i have not found any driver or other solution. i just power off and on the DVD ROM and it then detects, sorry i cant help any more.

Have you had the blank discs for a while ? If you have a large quantity try another one. If you are copying a "dual layer DVD" make sure that you are using the same type of blank media.

you're starting to experince laser pick up failure, maybe starting to weakened. Try using a cleaner first and it could be dirty nor with carbon deposits. If still the same then i dont know of any shop repairing DVD drives, it will be up for replacement only.

HP DVD 740e wont burn Dual Layers anymore!

Try re-installing the software associated with the burner, so it installs the necessary drivers and files needed for the burner to work according to your needs.

Also check the connections and cables... sometimes moving it around causes the cables to loose some contacts.

Hope this helps...

Try uninstalling the reinstalling your drive, if after you do this you still have this issue try using the disks in another burner to see if they can read it, typicly this problem is due to two things . Either your drivers are out of date or you are using cheapie disks
